What makes a treatment lunchtime-friendly

A lunchtime treatment has to pass three tests: it fits into about 30 to 60 minutes including getting there, it needs no numbing cream that must sit for half an hour, and it leaves nothing your colleagues would notice by the afternoon meeting. That rules some treatments in and some clearly out.

Your first visit takes longer, because it starts with a short assessment by an Aesthetic Specialist. If you only have an hour, book the assessment and a first session together on a day with a little slack, then fit later sessions into regular lunch breaks.

Face

Facials that fit a lunch break

HydraFacial Syndeo is the most straightforward lunchtime facial: 45 minutes to cleanse, exfoliate, extract by suction and infuse serum, and most people head straight back to work. Exfoliation does disturb the skin barrier briefly; in a study of diamond microdermabrasion, water loss through the skin was raised for about a day and back to normal by day 2, which is why the evening skincare after a lunchtime facial should be gentle.

SKINLDM, about 30 minutes, uses ultrasound micro-massage and suits sensitive or redness-prone skin. The Rejuran® PDRN Facial's 60-minute Essential tiers fit a long lunch; the longer tiers are better after work. The Needleless SkinBooster delivers a booster solution without needles.

Lifting and body

A 30-minute lift or body session

SKINLIFT® is a needle-free lifting session using multi-sequential pulsed ultrasound, aimed at mild to moderate jowls, a softening jawline or under-chin fullness. It takes 30 minutes with no numbing, and most clients return to work straight after; mild, short-lived redness can occur. In a study of focused ultrasound on the face and neck, side effects were mostly transient mild redness and swelling, and lifting was assessed at 90 days, so results build over time rather than showing at your desk that afternoon.

SKINSCULPT uses high-intensity electromagnetic muscle stimulation while you lie fully clothed, about 30 minutes per region; an MRI study of the technique reported no adverse events. SKINSHAPE uses Miglou UHF microwave energy for localised fat, about 30 minutes per zone. Both work as a course and neither is weight loss.

Waxing

Waxing in a lunch hour

Most waxing areas take about 15 to 45 minutes in a private room; a Brazilian takes about 20. Prices fall into four bands from S$18 for women and S$28 for men, GST included. Let the hair grow to about 5 mm first.

The catch for office workers is aftercare: skip the gym, sauna, pool and hot showers for 24 hours, because heat, friction and sweat on freshly waxed skin raise the chance of bumps and irritation. If you train at lunchtime, wax after work or on a rest day.

Getting here

Walking routes from Raffles City, Esplanade, Marina Square and Raffles Place

CityLink Mall is an underground mall running between City Hall MRT (East-West and North-South lines) and Esplanade MRT (Circle line), with underground links to Raffles City, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Marina Square, Suntec City and the Millenia Singapore developments. That means most of the walk from nearby offices can stay out of the midday sun and rain. Signs and exits can change, so follow the CityLink Mall signs and look for unit #B1-28.

• From Raffles City: go down to the basement towards City Hall MRT, then follow the signs into CityLink Mall.
• From Esplanade MRT: Exit D is the underground link to CityLink Mall. From Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, follow the underground signs to CityLink Mall.
• From Marina Square: Esplanade MRT's Exit B leads to the Marina Square basement, so walk through the station towards Exit D and CityLink Mall. From Suntec City, use the underpass to Esplanade MRT.
• From Raffles Place: there is no continuous underground walkway to City Hall. Take the East-West or North-South line one stop to City Hall, then follow the CityLink Mall signs. Walking above ground across the river is possible but takes longer and is exposed to sun and rain.

Back to work

What to avoid before heading back to the office

Singapore's UV index commonly reaches very high and extreme levels between 11am and 3pm on clear days, which is exactly lunchtime. Skin that has just been exfoliated is more vulnerable, so reapply sunscreen before you leave and use the underground route rather than crossing the Padang or the river in full sun.

• Do not book a heavy-extraction facial right before an important meeting; small red marks can take a few hours to settle.
• Do not go to the gym, sauna or a hot yoga class after waxing; wait 24 hours.
• Keep hands off the treated area and avoid scrubbing make-up on and off.
• Skip retinoids and exfoliating acids that night after an exfoliating facial.
• Do not try a new booster or treatment for the first time on a day you cannot afford a reaction.

Not at lunchtime

Treatments to keep for evenings, weekends or a doctor's visit

Some treatments simply do not suit a lunch break. SKINTIGHT on deeper resurfacing settings can leave pinpoint scabbing for a few days, so plan it for a Friday evening or before a quiet weekend; lighter tightening settings usually leave mild redness for a few hours. Eyebrow embroidery and lip blush need longer appointments, numbing and a healing period, and are priced at consultation.

Injectables, medical lasers and prescriptions are medical treatments performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, three MRT stops away beside Orchard MRT, and priced at consultation. Bruising and swelling after injections are unpredictable, so do not plan them right before a presentation.

• Tell us how much time you have, and we will suggest what fits.
• Arrive a few minutes early; for facials, come without heavy make-up if you can.
• For courses, a regular weekly or monthly lunchtime slot is easier to keep than ad hoc bookings.
• If lunch runs short, we are open until 8pm, including weekends and public holidays.
