Quick answer

  • A scar from an operation or accident can be made flatter, softer and less noticeable. The method depends on what kind of scar it is and how old it is.
  • Medical, performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic (Pacific Plaza, Orchard): Fractional CO₂ Laser (Tetra Pro S3), Luminescence Laser, RF Microneedling.
  • Assessment first; individual results vary. Medical pricing is given at consultation.

Scars from surgery, a caesarean section, mole removal, a fall or a cut come in many forms. Some stay red and raised, some sink into a dent, some widen as the skin stretches, and some turn darker or paler than the skin around them. Many also feel tight or itchy. Surgical scar treatment in Singapore is not about erasing the line, which is not possible, but about improving its colour, height, texture and flexibility so that it blends better with the surrounding skin.

Every scar goes through a long remodelling phase. In the first months it is often pink, firm and slightly raised while collagen is laid down quickly. Over roughly 12 to 18 months that collagen is reorganised, and many scars flatten and fade on their own. Tension across a joint or the chest, infection, delayed healing and a personal tendency to over-scar can push a scar towards becoming thick or wide. Sun exposure in the early months tends to darken it, which matters in Singapore's strong daylight.

Because scars change over time, the right moment to treat matters as much as the method. Early, red scars may respond to gentler treatment, while older, settled scars with uneven texture usually need deeper collagen remodelling. SkinRev does not treat scars. All three options listed below are medical treatments performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, who first checks whether the scar is hypertrophic, atrophic or a keloid, since each needs a different plan.

“No treatment removes a scar completely; the realistic aim is a scar that is flatter, softer and closer in colour to the skin around it.”

Scar types
Flat, raised (hypertrophic), indented (atrophic), widened, discoloured or keloid
Remodelling period
Scars keep changing for about 12–18 months after the injury
Fractional CO₂ laser
10,600 nm wavelength; vaporises microscopic columns of scar to restart remodelling
RF microneedling
Fine needles deliver radiofrequency heat into the dermis at depths set for the scar, usually within a few millimetres
Non-ablative laser
Heats the dermis without breaking the surface; gentler change, less downtime
When to consider laser
Once the wound has fully closed; studies have tested starting within the first 3 months

The honest ladder:
non-invasive first, medical when it is needed

At SkinRev Lab · non-invasive

There is no non-invasive treatment at SkinRev Lab that changes this concern. We will say so at the first visit and pass your enquiry to IN Eternity Clinic.

Fractional CO₂ Laser (Tetra Pro S3) — The DEKA Tetra Pro fractional CO₂ laser, used with a scar-focused protocol, resurfaces tiny columns of scar tissue so that new, better-organised collagen can form. It is usually chosen for raised, uneven or indented scars that have settled, and it needs several days of recovery plus careful settings in darker skin. How it works

Luminescence Laser — A non-ablative laser protocol that heats the dermis without breaking the skin surface. It suits newer or red scars and people who cannot take much downtime, and its changes are gentler and more gradual than resurfacing. How it works

RF Microneedling — Insulated microneedles deliver radiofrequency heat beneath the scar to stimulate collagen remodelling with limited disruption of the surface. It is often considered for darker skin types, indented scars and areas where a lower risk of post-inflammatory darkening is a priority. How it works

Enquiries to SkinRev Lab about medical treatments are passed to IN Eternity Clinic, where Dr Sin Yong performs them.

There is no non-invasive SkinRev option for scars, so this concern starts with a doctor. Simple care still matters in the meantime: protect the scar from the sun, keep it moisturised and follow your surgeon's advice on silicone products, taping or massage. See Dr Sin Yong if a scar is still red, raised or itchy a few months after healing, if it is widening, tethered or uneven, or if it is affecting your confidence. Seek prompt review if a scar suddenly grows, ulcerates or bleeds. If you tend to form keloids, mention it at the start.

What the research says

The evidence,
with sources

An international advisory panel reviewing scar management concluded that laser therapy has moved from an emerging option to the forefront of scar treatment, and that clinical and cosmetic outcomes generally seem better when several methods are combined. A separate systematic review of 25 studies looked at lasers started within three months of the wound, using devices including pulsed dye, fractional erbium and fractional CO₂ lasers. Laser-treated scars generally showed some benefit over untreated scars, though not always significant, and the authors called for higher-quality studies before standard protocols can be set.

A 2026 meta-analysis of nine randomised studies compared fractional lasers with microneedling for non-acne scars from trauma, burns and surgery. Fractional laser showed an advantage in overall scar scores and collagen regeneration, with no clear difference in side effects, although results varied widely between studies. A 2026 systematic review of radiofrequency microneedling across 41 studies found it well tolerated across skin types, with mainly short-lived redness and swelling and infrequent post-inflammatory darkening. Individual results vary, which is why the choice is made scar by scar.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

When should I start surgical scar treatment in Singapore?

Basic scar care, such as sun protection and following your surgeon's advice, starts as soon as the wound has closed. Laser can be considered once healing is complete, and studies have tested starting within the first three months, while the scar is still actively remodelling. Older scars can still be treated years later. Dr Sin Yong will check the wound is fully healed and settled enough before the first session.

How much does surgical scar treatment in Singapore cost?

Pricing is given at consultation at IN Eternity Clinic, because it depends on the size and type of scar, the method chosen and how many areas are treated. SkinRev does not treat scars, so there is no SkinRev price for this concern. You can enquire at SkinRev in CityLink Mall and we will route your enquiry to Dr Sin Yong's team at IN Eternity Clinic.

Is CO₂ laser or RF microneedling better for my scar?

Neither is right for every scar. Fractional CO₂ laser resurfaces the scar surface and usually gives a more marked texture change, with more downtime and a higher chance of temporary darkening in Asian skin. RF microneedling works mainly beneath the surface, with shorter recovery. Gentler non-ablative laser suits newer, red scars. Dr Sin Yong chooses, or combines, methods according to the scar's type, age, location and your skin tone.

Can a surgical scar be removed completely?

No method can make a scar disappear, because scar tissue is structurally different from normal skin. What treatment can do is improve height, texture, colour and flexibility so the scar is less noticeable and feels more comfortable. How much change is possible varies with the scar's age, depth and position, and Dr Sin Yong will give you a realistic view at consultation.

What is the downtime after scar treatment?

It depends on the method. After fractional CO₂ laser there is usually redness, swelling and fine crusting for several days, with pinkness that can last a few weeks. After RF microneedling, redness and mild swelling usually settle within a few days. Non-ablative laser typically leaves mild redness for a short time. Sun protection is important afterwards with every method.

Is laser scar treatment suitable for Asian or darker skin?

It can be, with care. Darker skin types have a higher risk of temporary darkening after heat-based treatments, especially resurfacing lasers. Dr Sin Yong adjusts energy, density and spacing for skin type, may prefer RF microneedling or a non-ablative approach in some cases, and plans skin preparation and sun protection around treatment to lower that risk.
