Most men who search for medical hair loss treatment Singapore options have noticed the same things: a hairline creeping back at the temples, a crown that shows under bright lights, or more hair on the pillow. At IN Eternity Clinic this is a doctor-led programme performed by Dr Sin Yong. It starts with a proper diagnosis, then builds a plan that may combine prescription medication, in-clinic laser sessions and, for some men, micrografting with their own scalp tissue.

The commonest cause in men is androgenetic alopecia, also called male pattern hair loss. Hormone-sensitive follicles at the temples and crown slowly shrink, and each new hair grows back a little finer and shorter. Not every case is pattern loss, though. Sudden all-over shedding after illness, stress or crash dieting, low iron, thyroid problems and patchy loss from alopecia areata all look different and are handled differently. Telling them apart is the first job of a medical consultation.

How it works

The mechanism,
in plain English

Hair grows in cycles: a long growth phase (anagen), a short transition, then a resting phase (telogen) before the hair falls out and the cycle restarts. In pattern hair loss the growth phase gets shorter with each cycle and the follicle itself miniaturises, so thick terminal hairs are gradually replaced by soft, short ones. Medical treatment aims to slow that shrinking and lengthen the growth phase in follicles that are still alive. Once a follicle has scarred over or stopped working altogether, medicine and light cannot restart it; only grafting moves new follicles into that area.

The plan is layered according to what the assessment finds. Prescription medication, taken by mouth or applied to the scalp, targets the hormonal and growth-cycle drivers of pattern loss, and is chosen only after a medical review of your health and other medicines. H2LT low-level laser sessions use red light to support follicle activity. Regenera Activa uses tiny samples of your own scalp to treat thinning zones. Deficiencies found on blood tests are corrected separately. Progress is tracked with the same standardised photographs and magnified scalp images at every review.

“A follicle that has gone for good cannot be coaxed back by any lotion, laser or injection — the honest aim of medical treatment is to protect and thicken the hair you still have.”

Is it right for you

Who it suits,
and who it does not

This suits men with early to moderate pattern thinning — a receding hairline, a thinning crown or a see-through patch at the parting — where many follicles are still present but getting finer. It also suits anyone whose shedding has changed suddenly and who wants the cause found rather than guessed. Men who have used a shop-bought product for months without much change, or who want to protect the result of a past hair transplant, are also good candidates for a medical review.

Medical treatment is not designed to restore areas that have been smooth and bald for years; there, a hair transplant or scalp micropigmentation for the look of density are the realistic routes. Scarring alopecias, where inflammation destroys follicles, need specialist dermatology care and sometimes a scalp biopsy. Prescription medication does not suit everyone: men planning a family soon, those with certain liver, heart or prostate conditions, and anyone on interacting medicines need the choice discussed carefully. If shedding comes with weight loss, tiredness or other symptoms, those are investigated first.

Non-invasive alternative at SkinRev Lab

Hairline & Scalp Micropigmentation — Hairline & Scalp Micropigmentation at SkinRev places tiny pigment impressions in the scalp so thinning areas look denser. It does not grow hair or slow hair loss, so it works alongside medical treatment, or on its own for men who prefer a cosmetic solution for areas that are already bald. Read more

What to expect

Consultation, session
and aftercare

The first visit is a consultation with Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic. Expect questions about when the loss started, family history, recent illness, diet, supplements and current medicines, followed by a scalp examination under magnification to look at hair thickness, density and the health of the scalp itself. Blood tests are arranged when the pattern or history points to a deficiency or a hormonal cause. Baseline photographs are taken so that later changes can be judged fairly.

You leave with a clear written plan. Medication is started at home, and laser or micrografting visits are booked only if they fit; a course is usually planned at consultation. In the first weeks some men notice a temporary rise in shedding as resting hairs are pushed out by new growth — this usually settles. Change is judged over months, not weeks, so reviews are spaced out. Pattern hair loss is ongoing, so stopping treatment usually allows thinning to resume gradually.

What the research says

The evidence,
with sources

A European evidence-based (S3) guideline, built on a systematic literature review and a consensus conference, rates the available treatments for androgenetic alopecia in men and women by the strength of their evidence, giving doctors a structured way to choose a starting plan. A 2017 meta-analysis of randomised controlled studies found that the established prescription treatments and low-level laser therapy all did better than placebo for hair growth in men with pattern loss, although the studies varied a great deal in design.

For men who want an in-clinic option alongside medication, a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 38 studies found that hair density rose with low-level laser or LED therapy compared with placebo in androgenetic alopecia, while evidence for other types of hair loss was too limited to pool. Taken together, these sources support the cause-first approach behind medical hair loss treatment Singapore patients receive at IN Eternity Clinic: confirm the diagnosis, start a treatment with published support, and judge progress over months with consistent photographs.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Medical hair loss treatment Singapore: where do I start?

Start with a diagnosis rather than a product. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong takes a history, examines the scalp under magnification and arranges blood tests if needed. That tells you whether you are dealing with pattern loss, shedding from a trigger, a deficiency or something less common. The plan follows from that. You can also enquire through SkinRev Lab, and the team will pass medical questions to IN Eternity Clinic.

How much does medical hair loss treatment cost?

Pricing is given at consultation at IN Eternity Clinic, because it depends on the cause, which tests are needed, and whether the plan uses medication alone or adds laser or micrografting. You see the full plan and its cost before agreeing to anything. If you are also weighing cosmetic options, SkinRev's Hairline & Scalp Micropigmentation is priced from S$688.

Is medical treatment my only option for a receding hairline?

No. There are three broad routes: medical treatment, a hair transplant, and cosmetic camouflage such as scalp micropigmentation. Medical treatment suits hairlines that are thinning but still have fine hairs, and aims to keep and thicken them. A transplant moves follicles into areas that are already bare. Camouflage changes how the scalp looks without changing the hair. Many men combine two of these.

How long before I see a difference?

Hair grows slowly and follicles respond over several growth cycles, so change is judged in months. Many men first notice less shedding, then finer hairs gradually thickening; visible density takes longer. Reviews use the same photo angles and lighting so small changes are neither missed nor imagined. Individual results vary, and for some men the main gain is that thinning stops progressing.

Do I really need blood tests for hair loss?

Not always, but often. If the history suggests shedding from a trigger, or there are signs of a deficiency or thyroid problem, blood tests help avoid treating the wrong thing. Typical checks include iron stores and thyroid function, with others added depending on your health. If a problem is found, it is corrected alongside any hair treatment, and sometimes that alone settles the shedding.

Does hair loss treatment have to continue for life?

Pattern hair loss is a long-term condition, so treatment usually works only for as long as it is kept up. When medication or laser is stopped, the underlying process tends to resume and gains are gradually lost. That is why Dr Sin Yong plans for something you can realistically maintain, and reviews the plan over time rather than chasing a quick result. Shedding from a one-off trigger is different and often settles once the cause is fixed.
