The treatment

How a HydraFacial works, in three steps

HydraFacial is a branded form of hydradermabrasion. One handpiece, fitted with a single-use HydroPeel tip, does the work of several steps in a traditional facial. Its patented Vortex-Fusion spiral tip creates a controlled vortex under gentle suction, so the same pass that loosens and lifts out debris also delivers serum to the skin. Every HydraFacial Syndeo at SkinRev Lab follows the same three-step protocol, adjusted to your skin by your Aesthetic Therapist.

Cleanse and peel

A gentle exfoliating tip sweeps away dead skin cells, and a mild glycolic and salicylic acid blend loosens what sits in the pores. It resurfaces lightly, without the flaking that can follow a stronger chemical peel.

Extract and hydrate

The Vortex-Fusion tip uses suction to lift out blackheads and congestion while flushing the skin with hydrating serum. Nothing is squeezed by hand, so there is less redness and less risk of marks than with manual extraction.

Fuse and protect

Serums chosen for your concern, with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides and antioxidants, are infused into the freshly cleared skin. In Deluxe and Platinum, a targeted booster goes in at this stage, with LED support.

The serums are HydraFacial's own, with brightening options such as vitamin C and kojic acid. You feel a cool tingle, then a wet, pulling sensation during extraction, strongest over the nose and chin, then a soothing serum step. A session takes about 45 minutes.

Extraction is step two of every tier: suction after an acid step clears blackheads and closed congestion without squeezing. What the research says about HydraFacial

Is HydraFacial really effective? For what it is designed to do, cleansing, exfoliating, extracting and hydrating, the evidence is small but consistent. These are the five peer-reviewed studies we found on hydradermabrasion and HydraFacial, with what each found and its limits.

Freedman, 2008: hydradermabrasion compared with the same serum applied by hand

Study: Randomised study of 20 women aged 34 to 56. One group had six hydradermabrasion sessions with an antioxidant serum, 7 to 10 days apart; the other had the same serum applied by hand on the same schedule.

Found: Biopsies showed a thicker epidermis and papillary dermis and higher skin antioxidant levels after hydradermabrasion; the hand-applied serum produced no detectable change.

Limits: Twenty participants, a single author, one serum and no long-term follow-up. It used a hydradermabrasion device of its time, not the current HydraFacial Syndeo.

Kim and colleagues, 2015: acid plus suction compared with acid alone

Study: Split-face study of 23 women. One side of the face had a single treatment with a 4% alpha hydroxy acid solution combined with negative pressure (suction); the other side had the acid alone.

Found: Whiteheads and blackheads fell significantly on the acid-plus-suction side at one, two and four weeks.

Limits: One session, 23 people and a generic acid-and-suction device rather than HydraFacial. It supports the idea behind step two, not the brand.

Kim SJ, Baek JH, Koh JS, Bae MI, Lee SJ, Shin MK. The effect of physically applied alpha hydroxyl acids on the skin pore and comedone. Int J Cosmet Sci. 2015;37(5):519-525. doi:10.1111/ics.12244 · DOI

Storgard and colleagues, 2022: a HydraFacial series for active acne

Study: Twelve-week, open-label study at two US sites. Twenty adults with mild to moderate acne had six HydraFacial Clarifying treatments, two weeks apart, each with cleansing and peeling, suction extraction and blue LED light.

Found: The share of people with clear or almost clear skin rose from 20% to 65% on the investigators’ grading, and from 5% to 55% on the patients’ own rating. Treatments were generally well tolerated.

Limits: No control group and no blinding, and only 20 people. Blue LED was part of every session, so the effect of each step cannot be separated. The article states no funding; one author was an employee of The Hydrafacial Company.

Razi and colleagues, 2024: what one session does to the outer skin layer

Study: Eight volunteers (Fitzpatrick skin types II to V) had one hydradermabrasion session and were imaged with line-field confocal optical coherence tomography before, straight after and two weeks later.

Found: The outer dead-cell layer thinned from an average 9.42 to 6.67 micrometres straight after treatment, and was 9.75 micrometres and more even at two weeks. There was no visible change in dermal collagen at two weeks.

Limits: Eight people, one session and no control group; the device is described only as a commercially available hydradermabrasion device.

Huang and colleagues, 2024: diamond-tip hydradermabrasion with a growth-factor serum

Study: Prospective study of 29 women aged 25 to 65 with facial sun damage: six in-clinic diamond-tip hydradermabrasion treatments (DiamondGlow) with a growth-factor serum, two weeks apart, plus the serum at home twice a day for 12 weeks.

Found: Investigator-graded fine lines, smoothness, radiance and hydration improved after the first treatment, and every graded measure was better than baseline by week 12. It was well tolerated.

Limits: A different device from HydraFacial, daily home use of the serum alongside, and no control group, so the in-clinic step cannot be judged on its own. Funded by Allergan Aesthetics, which makes the device and the serum.

What this means for you

Taken together, small and short studies support what a HydraFacial-type treatment does at the surface: lighter exfoliation, clearer pores and better hydration. None shows lasting new collagen, and one study was funded by a device maker while another had an author employed by HydraFacial's maker. Judge HydraFacial as regular skin upkeep, not as a treatment for scars, pigment or sagging.

See a doctor first, or wait, if

you have painful, cystic or scarring acne: it needs medical treatment first, with HydraFacial only as support (cystic acne treatment);
you are taking isotretinoin, or stopped recently: exfoliating facials are usually postponed, because the skin stays more fragile for months; your doctor can tell you when it is safe;
you have had a laser, peel or injectable treatment recently: wait until your doctor clears you;
your skin is sunburnt, or you are pregnant: tell us when you book, so the therapist can adjust or postpone the treatment;
you use retinoids, acid toners or scrubs: pause them for a few days beforehand, and avoid facial waxing or laser around the same time.

Sensitive and rosacea-prone skin often tolerates HydraFacial, because extraction is suction-based and the acids are mild compared with a standalone peel; very reactive skin may suit SKINLDM, a calming facial, better. We always do a skin check before your first session, and if HydraFacial is not right for your skin that day, we will say so.

Honest limits

Disadvantages and limits of HydraFacial

A HydraFacial is a good cleansing and hydrating facial, and it is fair to be clear about what it is not. These are the points we explain before anyone books.

Not for active cystic acne. Deep, painful or scarring acne needs a doctor's treatment. Inflamed spots are worked around, not extracted, so a facial cannot clear them.
Not a scar or pigment treatment. It does not resurface pitted acne scars or break down established pigment such as melasma, sun spots or freckles. Brightening serums can make tone look fresher, but defined marks need a doctor's assessment and usually a laser.
Results are temporary. Pores refill with oil and dead skin, and air-conditioning and sun dry the skin again, so the fresh look fades over days to a few weeks. Keeping it means regular sessions.
Mild redness or tingling. Sensitive skin can look flushed for a short while, usually settling within the hour, and a small spot or two can surface in the following days as congestion clears.
It costs more than a regular facial. At S$288 to S$438 before GST, it costs more than many manual facials, and the cost adds up if you book every four to six weeks. If budget matters, the Signature tier, or a simpler facial between HydraFacials, is a reasonable plan.
It does not lift or tighten. It works at the surface and in the pores. For sagging along the jawline, a lifting treatment such as SKINLIFT® does what a facial cannot.
The evidence is limited. The studies are small and short, and none shows new collagen.
Not every 'hydra facial' is a HydraFacial. Many clinics run other hydradermabrasion machines. Ask which device, tips and serums are used (see the checks below).

Syndeo is the current generation of the HydraFacial system. The Beauty Health Company introduced it in the United States in March 2022 and brought it to select markets in Europe and Asia-Pacific from April 2023. The name comes from the Greek for 'connected'. At SkinRev Lab, our Syndeo is maintained to the manufacturer's standards and operated by trained Aesthetic Therapists.

How Syndeo differs from earlier HydraFacial systems

All genuine HydraFacial systems deliver the same three core steps with the same patented Vortex-Fusion technology, HydroPeel tips and serums. Earlier systems, such as the Elite and the MD-branded models, are still in use in some clinics. What Syndeo changes is mainly the software and workflow around the treatment. HydraFacial lists:

on-screen protocols and prompts, so each step runs the same way from one visit, and one therapist, to the next;
gesture-based, touch-free controls during the treatment;
cloud-connected records of a client's skin concerns, past treatments and boosters;
built-in hands-free LED and lymphatic drainage features;
automatic software updates, so the system keeps up with new boosters.

A genuine HydraFacial, and how to check

SkinRev Lab holds HydraFacial's 2026 Certificate of Authenticity as a certified provider, and uses genuine tips, serums and boosters. HydraFacial requires every provider to hold a trademark licence, and second-hand devices must be recertified before use under its name. Many 'hydra facials' in Singapore run on other machines; they can be pleasant, but they are not the HydraFacial system.

Ask which device is used, and look for its name on the screen.

Platinum is the fullest session, for example before an event. Before your session

Aftercare

Make-up can go on the same day. If sensitive skin looks flushed, you may prefer to wait an hour.
