Scalp micropigmentation removal: fixing an SMP hairline that went wrong with T2 laser

A hairline drawn too low or too straight, dots that have spread or turned blue, density that looks painted rather than shaved: scalp micropigmentation can be lightened, or removed in part. Here is how, and what to expect.

Quick answer

  • Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) uses mostly black or dark-grey pigment, which absorbs 1064 nm laser well. Removal is done by a doctor with laser, in stages, and can be partial: only the dots in the wrong place need to go.
  • In a published series of four people treated with 1064 nm picosecond laser for unwanted SMP, clearance took one to three sessions, with no unexpected side effects. Dots that have blurred or sit deep may need more.
  • With T2 Targeted Tattoo on the DEKA TORO, Dr Sin Yong treats the black pigment at 1064 nm and any blue or green cast at 785 nm picosecond, reviewing between sessions.
  • At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall (City Hall MRT), Dr Sin Yong assesses and performs T2 himself, priced at consultation. WhatsApp clear photos of the front, sides and crown to 8266 9585.

This guide is written for SkinRev Lab and reviewed by Dr Sin Yong, who assesses scalp micropigmentation that has gone wrong, and hair loss, and performs T2 Targeted Tattoo laser himself at SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall. DEKA (Italy), the maker of the TORO laser used for T2, has appointed him a Global Key Opinion Leader, as have CLASSYS and HIRONIC (Korea); he speaks and trains doctors at their academies in Europe, Asia and South America.

The problems

SMP gone wrong: the common problems

ProblemWhat it looks likeWhat removal usually involves
Hairline too low or too straightA sharp, unnatural edge that does not suit your age or faceLighten the front few millimetres so the line can sit higher or softer
Dots too large or mergedA painted or shadowed look rather than stubbleLighten the area so it reads as stubble, or remove fully
Blue, green or ashy tintPigment placed too deep, or diluted carbon seen through the skin1064 nm for the dark part; 785 nm picosecond for a blue-green cast
Blurred dotsThe edge of each dot has spread, so the area looks smudgedStaged 1064 nm sessions; may need more than crisp dots
Too dark for your hair nowHair has greyed, or you no longer shave it shortOverall lightening, or full removal
Patchy fadingSome areas held pigment, others did notLighten the darker patches to even it out

SMP is meant to imitate shaved stubble. When the design no longer matches how you wear your hair, or the pigment has spread, the fix is usually to lighten or remove rather than to add more pigment over it.

The T2 plan

How scalp micropigmentation removal works

T2 stands for Targeted Tattoo: Dr Sin Yong's staged removal protocol on the DEKA TORO laser, which combines 785 nm picosecond with 532 nm and 1064 nm nanosecond wavelengths. SMP pigment is mostly carbon black, which absorbs 1064 nm well, so it tends to respond more predictably than the iron oxide shades used for brows and lips.

  • Assessment with photos of the front, sides and crown, and a record of when and how often the SMP was done.
  • A clear plan for what is to be removed: the whole area, only the hairline edge, or just the darkest patches.
  • Staged sessions several weeks apart, with photos at each visit.
  • Review of any blue or green cast, treated at 785 nm picosecond if needed.

The scalp around SMP still has hair. Dark hair absorbs laser energy too, so hair in the treated area is kept short and its response is discussed at assessment. If you are also losing hair, the cause is worth treating at the same time; Dr Sin Yong assesses hair loss at SkinRev Lab.

What to expect

Sessions, healing and what to expect

In the four-patient series published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, clearance took one to three sessions with 1064 nm picosecond laser, with reviews at three to four weeks. That is a small study, and heavier, deeper or blurred SMP can need more. Expect the scalp to be red and slightly swollen for a day or two, with pinpoint bleeding or small crusts that should be left alone. Avoid swimming, saunas and tight caps until the skin has settled, and protect the scalp from the sun, since tanned skin raises the risk of temporary pigment change.

Next steps

Removing SMP before a new hairline, a transplant or growing your hair

Many people want SMP removed because their plans have changed: they want to grow their hair longer, are considering a hair transplant, or want the hairline redrawn higher. Lightening first gives any next step a cleaner starting point. If you are planning a transplant, tell both the surgeon and the doctor treating the SMP, so the timing can be agreed.

Where to go

Scalp micropigmentation removal in Singapore: where to go

Laser removal of SMP is a medical treatment. At SkinRev Lab, #B1-28 CityLink Mall (between City Hall and Esplanade MRT), Dr Sin Yong examines the scalp, the pigment and any hair loss, agrees with you what is to be removed, performs every T2 session himself and prices the plan at consultation. SkinRev Lab is open daily from 11am to 8pm; WhatsApp photos to +65 8266 9585 to start.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Can scalp micropigmentation be removed?

In most cases it can be lightened substantially or removed, because SMP pigment is mostly black and absorbs 1064 nm laser well. Complete clearance cannot be promised, especially where dots have blurred or sit deep.

How many sessions does SMP removal take?

In a small published series, one to three sessions with 1064 nm picosecond laser. Dense, deep or layered SMP can need more, spaced several weeks apart.

Can just the hairline be removed?

Yes. T2 treats only the pigment that needs to go, so the front edge of a hairline that sits too low can be lightened and the rest left as it is.

Why has my SMP turned blue?

Black pigment placed too deep, or diluted, can look blue or green through the skin. The dark part responds to 1064 nm and a blue-green cast to 785 nm picosecond.

Will laser affect the hair on my scalp?

The laser is aimed at the pigment, but dark hair also absorbs laser energy. Hair in the treated area is kept short, and its response is discussed before treatment.

How much does SMP removal cost in Singapore?

At SkinRev Lab it is priced at consultation, after Dr Sin Yong has examined the area and agreed with you what is to be removed.
