Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling combines two familiar ideas: microneedling, which creates tiny channels in the skin, and radiofrequency, which heats tissue. A grid of very fine needles enters the skin to a set depth, and RF energy is released at or near the needle tips. At IN Eternity Clinic, RF microneedling in Singapore is performed by Dr Sin Yong for enlarged pores, surgical and injury scars, stretch marks and crepey skin around the eyes.

Because most of the heat is delivered inside the skin rather than on its surface, the outer layer is largely spared. This is why RF microneedling is often chosen for medium to darker skin types, which are more prone to pigment change after lasers that heat the surface. The needle depth can be changed from shallow, for delicate eyelid skin, to deeper, for scars and stretch marks on the body, sometimes within the same session.

How it works

The mechanism,
in plain English

When the needles reach the planned depth, a short burst of RF current passes through the tissue around the tips. The tissue resists the current and heats up, creating small zones of controlled thermal injury in the dermis, surrounded by untouched skin. The body responds with a wound-healing cascade: collagen and elastin are remodelled and new fibres are laid down over the following months, so the dermis becomes thicker and firmer.

For pores, heat around the follicle and oil gland can help the surrounding dermis tighten. For scars and stretch marks, remodelling softens and fills in uneven collagen. Around the eyes, gentle settings can firm thin, crepey skin. The needles also create micro-channels that close within hours. Change is slow and builds for months after a session. RF microneedling tightens skin; it does not remove fat, so under-eye bags caused by fat bulging need a different approach.

“RF microneedling can firm skin around the eyes, but it cannot move fat or lift a muscle that has weakened.”

Is it right for you

Who it suits,
and who it does not

RF microneedling in Singapore suits people with enlarged pores on the cheeks and nose, flat or depressed surgical and injury scars, stretch marks, and early crepey skin or fine lines around the eyes, including mild hooding from loose upper eyelid skin. It is a common choice for people with medium to darker skin who want collagen remodelling with a lower risk of pigment change than ablative lasers, and for those who can manage a few days of redness but not a week of crusting.

It does not treat eye bags caused by fat bulging, true eyelid ptosis caused by a weakened lifting muscle, or heavy sagging, which need other assessments. Active acne, infection, cold sores or eczema in the area should settle first. Keloid-prone people need caution, as any needling can trigger a keloid. People with a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, metal implants in the area, bleeding disorders or who are pregnant should tell the doctor, as RF microneedling may not be suitable. Gold allergy matters for some needle types.

Non-invasive alternative at SkinRev Lab

SKINTIGHT® — SKINTIGHT® at SkinRev resurfaces and tightens the surface layer with Alma PrimeX microplasma and UltraWave, with no needles. It suits people who want smoother, fresher-looking skin with minimal disruption, but it acts more superficially than RF microneedling, so deeper scars and stretch marks usually respond more to the medical option. What to expect

Consultation, session
and aftercare

At consultation, Dr Sin Yong examines the area, your skin type and any history of keloids or pigment problems, and explains which depths and passes suit your concern. For the eye area he checks whether the issue is skin, fat or muscle. Numbing cream is applied beforehand. A course is usually planned at consultation, as collagen remodelling builds over several sessions spaced weeks apart.

During treatment you feel pressure and brief heat with each placement, and sensitive areas can feel sharper. Afterwards the skin is red, warm and slightly swollen, sometimes with pinpoint marks in a grid, which usually settle in one to three days; the eye area may stay puffy a little longer. Keep skincare simple, avoid make-up for the first day, skip saunas and strenuous exercise briefly, and use sunscreen daily.

What the research says

The evidence,
with sources

A critical review of 42 randomised, split-body or blinded studies concluded that RF microneedling is effective for skin rejuvenation, acne scars, stretch marks and other uses, can be repeated safely, combines well with other treatments, and is suitable for darker skin types; it also noted that collagen remodelling is slow and continues to improve even six months after treatment. A separate systematic review of RF and RF microneedling in Fitzpatrick skin types III to VI found a low risk of scarring or lasting pigment change, mostly transient post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, while noting that many studies were of limited quality.

For specific concerns, a retrospective study of 75 patients with enlarged facial pores found fractional microneedle RF improved pores safely, with improvement rising as sessions increased. For stretch marks, a meta-analysis comparing fractional microneedle RF with fractional CO₂ laser found similar improvement on both doctor and patient assessments, but significantly less post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with RF microneedling. Individual results vary.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

How much does RF microneedling in Singapore cost at IN Eternity Clinic?

Pricing is given at consultation at IN Eternity Clinic, because it depends on the area, such as the eyes, full face or a stretch-mark zone, and on how many sessions your concern is likely to need. Collagen builds over a course, so it helps to understand the whole plan and the expected downtime rather than comparing one session in isolation.

Can RF microneedling fix eye bags?

It depends on the cause. RF microneedling can firm thin, crepey skin and soften fine lines under the eyes, which may make the area look smoother. It cannot remove the fat that causes true eye bags to bulge, or correct hollowing; those need a different assessment. Dr Sin Yong checks whether skin, fat, fluid or volume loss is the main problem before recommending treatment.

Does RF microneedling hurt?

Numbing cream is applied beforehand, and most people describe pressure, prickling and short bursts of heat. Bony areas and the upper lip can feel sharper. Settings are adjusted to your comfort and to each area. Afterwards the skin feels warm and tight, similar to mild sunburn, for a few hours.

What is the downtime?

Usually one to three days of redness, warmth and mild swelling, sometimes with faint grid marks. The eye area may stay puffy slightly longer. Most people return to work within a day or two, using mineral make-up once the skin has settled. Avoid saunas, strenuous exercise and strong actives briefly, and use sunscreen daily.

How is RF microneedling different from fractional CO₂ laser?

Fractional CO₂ removes microscopic columns of skin, which can do more for some scars but means about a week of crusting and a higher risk of darkening in Asian skin. RF microneedling heats the dermis through needles while largely sparing the surface, so recovery is shorter and pigment risk is lower. Studies in stretch marks found similar improvement with less pigment change after RF microneedling.

How many sessions of RF microneedling will I need?

Most concerns need a course, because collagen remodelling builds gradually and continues for months after each session. The number depends on what is treated, how deep it is and how your skin responds, and is planned at consultation. Sessions are spaced weeks apart. Pores and fine lines may need fewer than deeper scars or older stretch marks.
