Ingrown Hair why it happens, how to prevent it, and when to see a doctor
An ingrown hair is a hair that grows back into the skin instead of out of it. Most settle on their own within a week or two; the ones that keep coming back, especially along the bikini line, are worth a different plan.

Quick answer
- An ingrown hair is a hair that curls back into the skin after shaving, waxing or plucking, leaving an itchy or tender bump, sometimes with the hair visible underneath. Razor bumps are the same problem in a shaved area.
- Prevention: shave less often and with the grain, exfoliate gently a day or two before waxing and again from day three after, wear loose clothing, and never pick or squeeze a bump.
- See a doctor if a bump becomes very painful, hot, swollen or full of pus, if you have a fever or feel unwell, if a lump keeps growing, or if bumps keep returning, scar or leave dark marks.
- If ingrown hairs keep returning in the same area, laser hair reduction by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic is the longer-term route, priced at consultation by the clinic. SkinRev Lab does not perform laser, and for a full Brazilian we point you to laser rather than waxing.
The basics
What an ingrown hair is, and who gets them
Shaving, waxing and plucking remove the hair but leave the follicle in place. As the new hair grows, its tip can curl back into the skin or turn sideways under the surface. The skin treats it as something foreign and becomes inflamed, leaving a small red, brown or purple bump that itches or feels sore, sometimes with the hair visible inside.
Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) are the same reaction in a shaved area: classically the beard and neck in men, and most often the groin in women. Ingrown hairs are not contagious, and most heal on their own within one to two weeks.
You are more likely to get them if:
- Your hair is coarse or curly. Curved hair is more likely to turn back into the skin, which is why it is so common in men with tightly curled beard hair.
- You have skin of colour, which is also more prone to dark marks once a bump heals.
- You shave often, shave very closely, stretch the skin while shaving or use a blunt razor.
- The area is rubbed by clothing. Pubic hair is coarser and curlier than most body hair, and the bikini line sits right under underwear elastic, so it is a frequent trouble spot. The beard, neck, underarms and legs are the others.
Shaving
How to shave with fewer ingrown hairs and razor bumps
NHS guidance puts not shaving first: if you can let the hair grow, the trapped hairs work themselves out. If you do shave, technique makes a real difference.
- Soften first: shave at the end of a warm shower, or hold a warm cloth on the area, then use a shaving gel or cream. Never dry shave.
- Shave in the direction the hair grows, with short, light strokes, and go over each area no more than twice. Do not stretch the skin.
- Do not shave too closely. Leaving about 1 mm of stubble, or using an electric shaver held just off the skin, gives the hair less chance to curl back in.
- Use a sharp blade, rinse it after each stroke and store it dry. Dermatologists suggest replacing a single-blade razor after five to seven shaves.
- Shave less often if you can, rather than every day.
- Afterwards, rinse and apply a cool damp cloth; exfoliate gently on the days in between.
Waxing
Ingrown hair after waxing: before and after
Waxing pulls each hair from the root, so regrowth is slower and finer than after shaving, but the new hair still has to find its way out through the skin. That is when ingrown hairs appear, usually as the hair starts to come back.
Before a wax, let the hair grow to about 5 mm, roughly two to three weeks, so it comes out cleanly in one pass. Exfoliate gently a day or two ahead and skip moisturiser on the day. Do not wax over broken skin, an active rash or a bump that is inflamed or infected; at SkinRev Lab we would rather reschedule than wax over it.
After a wax, skip hot showers, sauna, pool and the gym for 24 hours, and keep the area clean and loosely clothed. From day three, start exfoliating gently again, a few times a week; scrubbing freshly waxed skin only irritates it. Do not shave between waxes.
SkinRev Lab, our non-invasive aesthetic centre at CityLink Mall, waxes the bikini line in the Medium band: S$38 for women and S$48 for men, GST included, or S$28 as a first-visit rate on one area for new clients.

What to do with an ingrown hair at home
- Leave it alone. Picking, squeezing or digging lets bacteria in and raises the chance of infection, scarring and dark marks.
- Hold a warm, wet cloth on it for 10 to 15 minutes, up to four times a day, to soften the skin and help the hair surface.
- If a loop of hair is clearly at the surface, lift it gently with clean tweezers. Never dig for a hair you cannot see.
- Pause shaving, waxing and plucking on that patch until it clears. Removing hair over an inflamed bump makes it worse.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area, particularly after the gym.
- Give it time: most ingrown hairs settle within one to two weeks. Razor bumps usually settle about four to six weeks after the hair removal causing them stops.
See a doctor
When an ingrown hair needs a doctor
SkinRev Lab is an aesthetic centre, not a clinic, so we do not treat infected bumps, cysts or scarring. See a doctor if you notice any of the following:
- Signs of infection: the bump or skin around it becomes very painful, hot or swollen, leaks pus, or redness spreads.
- A high temperature, or feeling hot, shivery or generally unwell, alongside a bump. Get seen promptly.
- A lump that keeps growing, feels like a fluid-filled sac, or has burst. An ingrown hair can form a cyst.
- Bumps that keep coming back despite good shaving or waxing habits.
- Scarring, raised or keloid-type scars, or dark marks that linger after bumps heal.
- Bumps on or near the genitals that you are unsure about. Ingrown hairs can look like genital herpes, and a doctor can tell them apart.
- Painful lumps in the groin, underarms or buttocks that leak or keep reappearing in the same place, even where you do not remove hair. These can be hidradenitis suppurativa, which needs medical care.
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Small itchy bump, hair visible, mild redness | Uncomplicated ingrown hair | Warm compress, hands off, pause hair removal on that patch |
| Hot, very painful, swollen, pus, spreading redness | Possible infection | See a doctor |
| Growing or fluid-filled lump, or one that has burst | Possible ingrown hair cyst | See a doctor |
| Bumps returning every time you shave or wax | Recurrent ingrown hairs or razor bumps | Doctor review; consider laser hair reduction |
| Dark marks or scars where bumps used to be | Post-inflammatory darkening or scarring | Doctor review first, especially if raised or pitted |
Longer term
Laser hair reduction for repeat ingrown hairs
If the same area keeps producing ingrown hairs, the direct fix is fewer hairs. Laser targets the pigment in the hair and damages the follicle, so over a course of sessions fewer, finer hairs grow back, and fewer can turn into the skin. NHS and DermNet guidance both list laser as an option for recurrent ingrown hairs or razor bumps.
The evidence is encouraging but limited. In a small observational study of 37 people with skin types IV to VI and razor bumps that had not improved with conservative care, a single long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG treatment to a small area under the chin left an average of 1.0 bump after 90 days, against 6.95 in an untreated control area next to it. Results vary, and a course is usually needed.
Laser hair removal is a medical treatment, so SkinRev Lab does not perform it. It is done by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, our affiliated clinic at 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT. The clinic uses the Lutronic Clarity II, with 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths chosen for your skin tone; 1064 nm is the usual choice for darker skin. It aims for long-term reduction, not removal of every hair, and is priced at consultation by the clinic. The clinic is open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 8pm; WhatsApp +65 8815 3008, or ask us and we will pass your enquiry on.
The bikini area is where this matters most. For a full Brazilian, SkinRev Lab steers people towards laser rather than waxing, because the intimate area is where repeated removal most often brings ingrown hairs and bumps. If your hair is too light for laser, or you get only the occasional bump, a bikini line wax may be all you need.
Three practical points. Laser needs pigment, so it works poorly on white, grey, very blonde or red hair. Stop waxing and plucking about four weeks before your first session and shave instead. And an infected or inflamed area needs to settle before it is treated.
Dark marks
If ingrown hairs have left dark marks on the bikini line
Repeated bumps, friction and hair removal can darken the bikini line and inner thighs, more noticeably on skin of colour. Stopping the bumps comes first.
SKINPINK is a separate, needle-free topical brightening treatment at SkinRev Lab for areas including the bikini line and inner thighs: S$288 per region per session before GST, or S$88 for one region on a first visit. A course is planned at your assessment, results vary, and you should avoid shaving or waxing the area for three days before each session. Marks that are raised or pitted, or darkening that appears suddenly, spreads or feels velvety, should be checked by a doctor first.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
What is the fastest way to get rid of an ingrown hair?
There is no safe shortcut. Use a warm, wet cloth for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day, keep your hands off it and pause hair removal there. Most settle within one to two weeks; if it turns hot, very painful or full of pus, see a doctor.
Why do I get ingrown hairs after waxing?
As the new hair grows back it can turn into the skin instead of out, especially coarse or curly hair under tight clothing. Exfoliate gently from day three and wear loose clothing. If they keep returning, consider laser hair reduction.
How do I stop ingrown hairs on the bikini line?
Shave with the grain and not too closely, exfoliate a day or two before waxing and from day three after, and avoid tight underwear and gym wear straight after. For recurrent bumps, laser at IN Eternity Clinic reduces the number of hairs that can grow in.
Are razor bumps the same as ingrown hairs?
Essentially, yes: razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) are ingrown hairs caused by shaving, usually on the beard and neck in men and the groin in women. Shave less often, leave a little stubble and use a sharp razor; persistent bumps need a doctor.
When should I see a doctor about an ingrown hair?
With signs of infection, a fever or feeling unwell, a lump that grows or bursts, bumps that keep returning, scar or leave dark marks, or a bump near the genitals you are unsure about.
Can SkinRev Lab treat my ingrown hairs?
No. SkinRev Lab is a non-invasive aesthetic centre, not a clinic, and we will not wax over inflamed or infected skin. Infected bumps, cysts and scarring need a doctor; laser hair reduction is performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic.
Does laser hair removal help ingrown hairs?
For many people with dark hair, yes: fewer hairs means fewer to grow back into the skin. It aims for long-term reduction, not removal of every hair, works poorly on very light hair, and results vary. IN Eternity Clinic prices it at consultation.
Do you do Brazilian waxing for people who get ingrown hairs?
For a full Brazilian, we point you towards laser hair removal at IN Eternity Clinic rather than waxing, because the intimate area is where repeated removal most often brings ingrown hairs. A bikini line wax at SkinRev Lab is S$38 for women and S$48 for men, GST included.
