Laser hair removal uses pulses of light that are absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The heat travels down the hair shaft and damages the follicle that produces it, so that fewer hairs grow back, and those that do are usually finer and lighter. At IN Eternity Clinic, laser hair removal in Singapore is performed by Dr Sin Yong on the Lutronic Clarity II, a platform with two wavelengths in one machine.

Having two wavelengths matters in Singapore, where skin tones commonly range from fair to deep brown. The 755 nm alexandrite wavelength is strongly absorbed by melanin, which makes it efficient for fairer skin and finer hair. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength is absorbed less by melanin and reaches deeper, which makes it the safer choice for tanned or darker skin. The doctor picks the wavelength, and sometimes switches between them, area by area.

How it works

The mechanism,
in plain English

The principle is called selective photothermolysis. The laser fires a pulse lasting milliseconds, long enough to heat the pigmented hair shaft and the follicle around it, but short enough that the surrounding skin cools before it is damaged. Cooling is applied to the skin surface with every pass to protect the outer layer. Because the target is pigment, dark hair responds well, while white, grey, very blonde or red hair carries little melanin and responds poorly whatever the machine.

Hair grows in cycles. Only follicles in the active growth phase (anagen) are attached to a pigmented hair that can carry the heat down to the root. At any one time, a portion of follicles are resting, so a single session cannot reach them all. This is why treatment is given as a course, spaced roughly four to eight weeks apart depending on the area, with face areas usually closer together than the legs or back. Treated hairs then shed over about one to three weeks.

“Laser hair removal reduces hair; it does not switch off every follicle forever, and hormones can wake new ones.”

Is it right for you

Who it suits,
and who it does not

Laser hair removal in Singapore suits people with dark hair on almost any skin tone who want less shaving, waxing or plucking over the long term. Common areas are the underarms, upper lip, chin, bikini line, legs, arms, chest and back. It is also useful for people who get ingrown hairs or razor bumps, and for men who want to thin a heavy beard line on the neck. Women with excess facial or body hair linked to hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also benefit, although they often need maintenance sessions and medical review of the hormone side.

It is not a good fit for white, grey or very light hair, because there is too little pigment for the laser to target. Treatment is usually deferred during pregnancy, on freshly tanned or sunburnt skin, and while taking medicines that make the skin sensitive to light or slow its healing; tell the doctor about recent acne medication. Active infection, open wounds or a rash over the area need to settle first. Moles and tattoos inside the area are shielded or avoided. If sudden new hair growth has appeared, the cause should be checked before lasering, as this can reflect a hormonal issue that needs its own treatment.

Non-invasive alternative at SkinRev Lab

Waxing — Waxing at SkinRev removes hair from the root and keeps skin smooth for a few weeks, with no effect on the follicle itself, so the hair grows back. It suits people who want a quick result now or whose hair is too light for laser. Do not wax in the four weeks before a laser session. Read more

What to expect

Consultation, session
and aftercare

At consultation, Dr Sin Yong looks at your skin type, hair colour and thickness, the areas you want treated, recent sun exposure and your medicines. Stop waxing, plucking and threading for about four weeks beforehand so the hair root is present; shaving is fine and the area should be shaved a day before. A small test area may be done first if your skin is darker or sensitive. A course is usually planned at consultation, as the number of sessions depends on the area, the hair and your hormones.

During the session you wear eye protection. Each pulse feels like a quick snap or warm prick, and cooling makes it more comfortable; numbing cream can be used on sensitive areas. Afterwards, expect redness and small raised bumps around the follicles for a few hours. Avoid hot showers, saunas, the gym and perfumed products that day, stay out of strong sun, and do not wax or pluck between sessions. Use sunscreen on exposed areas throughout the course.

What the research says

The evidence,
with sources

A Cochrane systematic review of randomised studies found that alexandrite and diode lasers produced a short-term reduction in hair, but noted that most studies were small, short and of limited quality, and that long-term removal was not documented. This is why we describe the outcome as long-term reduction rather than removal of every hair. A later randomised, assessor-blinded study in skin types III and IV compared long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG and 755 nm alexandrite on the legs and found both effective 18 months after the last session, while combining the two wavelengths in the same area added side effects without extra benefit.

For darker skin, a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies in Fitzpatrick skin types III to VI found that hair reduction was broadly similar across lasers, and that long-pulsed Nd:YAG was associated with less post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than intense pulsed light, which supports matching the wavelength to skin tone. An uncommon effect to know about is paradoxical hypertrichosis, where treatment stimulates new fine hair; a meta-analysis found it mainly on the face and neck, rarely elsewhere, and it often improved with continued treatment.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

How much does laser hair removal in Singapore cost at IN Eternity Clinic?

Pricing depends on the areas treated and how many sessions your hair is likely to need, so it is given at consultation at IN Eternity Clinic rather than as a fixed list. Larger areas such as full legs or the back take longer than the upper lip or underarms. If you are comparing options, ask what wavelength will be used for your skin tone and who performs the treatment, not only the price per session.

Will the hair ever come back after laser hair removal?

Some usually does. Laser hair removal reduces the number of hairs and makes regrowth finer and lighter for many people, but individual results vary and it cannot promise that every follicle stops for good. Hormonal changes, such as with PCOS, pregnancy or age, can activate new follicles over time. Most people find that occasional maintenance sessions keep the area manageable once the main course is complete.

How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need?

It varies by area, hair colour and thickness, and hormones, so a course is planned at consultation rather than fixed beforehand. Several sessions are usually needed because only hairs in the active growth phase respond at each visit. Sessions are typically spaced four to eight weeks apart, with face areas closer together. Coarse dark hair on fair skin tends to respond faster than fine hair or hormonally driven growth.

Does it hurt, and is there downtime?

Each pulse feels like a quick snap or warm prick, and skin cooling with every pass makes it more tolerable. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip and bikini line feel sharper, and numbing cream can be used there. There is usually no downtime: redness and small bumps around the follicles settle within hours. Avoid heat, the gym and strong sun on the day, and use sunscreen on exposed areas during the course.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker or tanned skin?

It can be, with the right wavelength and settings. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength is absorbed less by skin pigment and is the usual choice for darker skin types, while 755 nm alexandrite suits fairer skin. Recent tanning raises the risk of burns and pigment changes, so treatment is deferred until a tan fades. A test area may be done first, and Dr Sin Yong adjusts settings area by area.

Can I shave or wax between sessions?

Shave, but do not wax, pluck or thread. The laser needs the hair root in the follicle to carry heat down to it, and waxing or plucking removes that root, so stop these about four weeks before treatment and during the course. Shaving leaves the root in place and is fine; shave the area the day before your session so the laser energy goes into the follicle rather than surface hair.
