Brazilian laser hair removal in Singapore: the area, privacy, comfort and what to expect
A Brazilian is one of the more personal areas to treat with laser, and one where good preparation makes a real difference to comfort and safety. Here is what the area covers, how privacy is handled, how it feels, how to prepare, how many sessions to expect and how it compares with waxing.

Quick answer
- Brazilian laser hair removal in Singapore treats the pubic area from front to back, including the mons pubis, the hair-bearing skin of the vulva and, if you want, the strip between the buttocks. Mucous membranes are not treated. You agree the shape, bare or a small strip, before the first session.
- Only the area being treated is uncovered, you can ask for a chaperone, and you can pause at any time. It is one of the more sensitive areas: cooling is used with every pulse and numbing cream can help, used exactly as advised.
- Shave the day before and stop waxing, plucking and threading about four weeks beforehand. A course of sessions roughly four to eight weeks apart is usual; skin in the bikini area is often darker, so the 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength is commonly chosen. Laser reduces hair; it does not lighten existing pigment.
- At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, and IN Eternity Clinic, Pacific Plaza, Brazilian laser is performed by Dr Sin Yong on the Lutronic Clarity II and priced at consultation. A Brazilian wax at SkinRev Lab is S$98 for women and a Boyzilian S$118 for men, GST included.
The area
Brazilian laser hair removal in Singapore: what area is covered
A bikini line treats the hair that would show outside standard underwear. An extended bikini goes further in at the sides and along the upper edge. A Brazilian treats the pubic area from front to back: the mons pubis, the hair-bearing skin of the vulva and, if you want it, the strip between the buttocks. Mucous membranes are not treated. The men's equivalent is usually called a Boyzilian and is assessed on the same principles.
You agree the shape before the first pulse: fully bare, a small strip or shape at the front, or a tidier bikini line only. This matters more with laser than with waxing. Waxed hair grows back within weeks, but laser aims for long-term reduction, so hair you remove now may not return the way it was if you change your mind. Starting conservative is reasonable, because more can be treated later.
The boundary is agreed with you and can be marked on the skin. If you are comparing clinics, check that each one means the same area by 'Brazilian', since the word is used loosely.
Privacy
Privacy, draping and consent
Brazilian laser is an intimate procedure, and it is reasonable to expect the same standards as any intimate examination. You change in private, only the area being treated is uncovered at any time, and the rest of you stays covered. You can ask for a chaperone to be present, and you can ask to pause or stop at any point.
Before the session, the doctor should explain what will be treated, what you will feel and how the area will be positioned, and check that you are comfortable to go ahead. Eye protection is worn by everyone in the room while the laser is in use. Photographs, if any are needed for your records, should only be taken with your consent.
If anything about the setting makes you uneasy, say so before you start. A good clinic would rather adjust the plan than have you tense through a session.
Comfort
How Brazilian laser feels, and what helps
The bikini area is one of the more sensitive areas to laser. Pubic hair is usually coarse and dense, so it absorbs more energy, and each pulse feels like a quick snap or warm prick. Cooling is applied with every pass, and numbing cream can be used on sensitive areas.
Numbing cream should be used exactly as advised. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned against over-the-counter products with more than 4% lidocaine, heavy application over large areas, use on irritated or broken skin, and wrapping treated skin, because of risks such as irregular heartbeat, seizures and breathing difficulties.
Discomfort often eases as the course goes on. In a randomised study of underarm laser, pain scores fell from the first to the third session as hair counts dropped, and pain tolerance tended to be lower during menstruation, although that difference was not statistically significant. Hair reduction itself was not affected by the phase of the cycle.
Preparation
Before your session: shaving and other preparation
The laser needs the hair root in the follicle, but not the hair above the skin. Shave rather than wax, and follow these steps.
Some situations mean waiting. Treatment is usually deferred during pregnancy, on freshly tanned or sunburnt skin, while taking medicines that make the skin sensitive to light or slow its healing, and if there is active infection, a rash or broken skin in the area. Tell the doctor about recent acne medication, a tendency to keloid scars, and any history of herpes in the area, as laser can trigger a flare.
- Stop waxing, plucking, threading and epilating about four weeks before your first session, and do not restart during the course.
- Shave the area the day before your session, so energy goes into the follicle rather than surface hair.
- Avoid tanning and self-tan on the area before and during the course.
- Let any shaving rash or ingrown bumps settle first; inflamed or broken skin is treated only once it has healed.
- If your period is due, you can still be treated, but you may prefer to book outside it for comfort.
Sessions
How many sessions a Brazilian usually needs
Only hairs in the active growth phase carry heat down to the root, so a Brazilian is treated as a course, with sessions roughly four to eight weeks apart. Treated hairs shed over about one to three weeks after each visit, which can look like regrowth at first.
The American Academy of Dermatology says the majority of patients need 2 to 6 treatments and that some regrowth is usual, with maintenance when needed. Coarse, dark pubic hair often responds well; finer, lighter or hormonally driven hair responds more slowly. The number of sessions is planned at consultation rather than promised beforehand.
Between sessions, shave as needed and keep the area out of strong sun. After each session, avoid hot showers, saunas and the gym for the rest of the day, wear loose underwear, and skip perfumed products on the area.
Skin tone
Darker skin in the bikini area
Skin in the bikini area is often deeper in colour than elsewhere, from friction, hormones and repeated hair removal. That changes the laser plan. The darker the skin, the more its own melanin competes with the hair for the light, so the 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which is absorbed less by skin pigment, is the usual choice, with settings adjusted and sometimes a test patch first.
A meta-analysis of trials in skin types III to VI found broadly similar hair reduction across devices, with long-pulsed Nd:YAG associated with less post-inflammatory darkening than intense pulsed light. Darkening after laser can still happen and usually fades, but it can take months.
Laser hair removal does not lighten skin that is already darker. Less shaving and waxing can reduce the friction and inflammation that add to darkening over time. If pigment is the main concern, SKINPINK at SkinRev Lab is a needle-free topical brightening session for the intimate area, S$288 per region per session before GST, planned at assessment; results vary.
Bumps and lumps
Ingrown hairs, bumps and when to see a doctor
Repeated removal of pubic hair commonly brings problems. In a survey of 333 women at two US clinics, 60% reported at least one complication of pubic hair removal, commonly skin abrasion and ingrown hairs. Because laser reduces the number of hairs, there are fewer to grow back into the skin.
See a doctor rather than book laser if a bump is hot, very painful or leaking, if you have a fever, or if painful lumps keep returning in the groin, buttocks or armpits. Recurrent lumps of this kind can be hidradenitis suppurativa, a long-term condition that needs medical care. A 2024 meta-analysis found that laser hair removal improved hidradenitis severity in the studies reviewed, but it is part of a dermatologist-led plan, not a substitute for one.
Moles, warts, unexplained sores or lumps in the area should be examined before any laser.
Laser or wax
Brazilian laser vs Brazilian wax
Waxing pulls hair from the root, so the area stays smooth for roughly three to six weeks, but the follicle is unchanged and the hair grows back. It works on any hair colour, gives a clean result this week, and needs no course. At SkinRev Lab a Brazilian wax is S$98 for women and a Boyzilian S$118 for men, GST included.
Laser works on the follicle, aiming for fewer, finer hairs over a course. It does not work well on white, grey, very blonde or red hair, and it takes months rather than days. You cannot mix the two during a course: waxing removes the root the laser needs, so stop waxing about four weeks before your first laser session.
If you want the area bare for a holiday next week, wax. If you want to stop dealing with regrowth and ingrown hairs over the long term, and your hair is dark, laser is usually the better fit.
At SkinRev Lab
Brazilian laser at SkinRev Lab: consultation and pricing
Laser hair removal is performed by Dr Sin Yong (MBBS Singapore, MRCS Edinburgh, MSc Practical Dermatology Cardiff) on the Lutronic Clarity II, which carries the 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths and lets him choose between them for your skin. At consultation he discusses the shape you want, examines the skin and hair, asks about medicines, previous hair removal and any skin problems in the area, and explains the options, including waxing or no treatment.
If something needs attention first, such as recurrent painful lumps, an unexplained sore or a mole, he will say so and, where needed, suggest seeing a dermatologist or your GP. Brazilian laser is priced at consultation, because the plan depends on the area and the number of sessions your hair is likely to need.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
What does Brazilian laser hair removal cover?
The pubic area from front to back: the mons pubis, the hair-bearing skin of the vulva and, if you want it, the strip between the buttocks. Mucous membranes are not treated. You can keep a small strip or shape at the front; agree it before the first session.
Does Brazilian laser hurt?
It is one of the more sensitive areas. Each pulse feels like a quick snap or warm prick, cooling is used with every pass, and numbing cream can be applied. Many people find later sessions easier as the hair thins.
Do I have to be fully undressed?
No. You change in private and only the area being treated is uncovered at any time. You can ask for a chaperone and ask to pause or stop whenever you need to.
Should I shave before Brazilian laser?
Yes, the day before. Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate for about four weeks before your first session or during the course, because the laser needs the root in the follicle.
Can I have laser during my period?
Results were not affected by the phase of the menstrual cycle in a randomised study, so a period need not stop treatment. Some people find it more uncomfortable then and prefer to reschedule; tell the clinic when you book.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies with your hair, skin and hormones, so a course is planned at consultation. The American Academy of Dermatology says the majority of patients need 2 to 6 treatments, with some regrowth and occasional maintenance.
Will laser lighten dark skin in the bikini area?
No. Laser reduces hair; it does not remove pigment that is already there. Less shaving and waxing may reduce ongoing irritation. Pigment needs its own plan, and it should be checked first if it is spreading or the skin feels thickened.
Is Brazilian laser safe for darker skin?
It can be, with the right wavelength and settings. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength is absorbed less by skin pigment and is the usual choice for darker skin. A recent tan postpones treatment.
Can men have Brazilian laser?
Yes. The men's equivalent, often called a Boyzilian, is assessed on the same principles: skin tone, hair colour and the exact area are agreed at consultation with Dr Sin Yong.
