Guide · Tummy tuck vs non-surgical
Tummy tuck vs non-surgical options what surgery fixes, and when a device is enough
A tummy tuck removes loose skin and can repair separated muscles; non-surgical treatments reduce fat, firm mild laxity and tone muscle. Here is how to tell which your tummy needs, how to check for diastasis recti, and how recovery compares.

Quick answer
- A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is surgery by a plastic surgeon that removes loose skin and fat from the lower tummy and can stitch separated stomach muscles back together. In Singapore it suits people with a fold of skin that hangs over the waistband, a wide muscle gap after pregnancy, or loose skin after major weight loss.
- Non-surgical treatments suit a different tummy: pinchable fat, mild to moderate loose skin and low muscle tone at a stable weight. They give gradual, moderate change over weeks to months with little downtime, but they cannot remove a hanging fold or close a wide gap.
- Check for diastasis recti first. In a study of 300 first-time mothers, a gap of two finger-breadths or more was still present in about a third at 12 months after birth, and exercise on its own usually narrows it only slightly.
- SkinRev Lab does not do surgery. At CityLink Mall it offers SKINSHAPE and SKINUSHAPE for fat (S$288 per zone, first zone S$88), SKINSCULPT for muscle tone (S$288 per region, first region S$68) and SKINTIGHT for loose skin (S$588 per zone), before GST. Dr Sin Yong's 4K Body Lift at IN Eternity Clinic is priced at consultation.
The surgery
What a tummy tuck in Singapore actually fixes
Abdominoplasty is an operation, usually under general anaesthesia, in which a plastic surgeon removes a section of loose skin and fat between the belly button and the pubic area, tightens the remaining skin and repositions the belly button. When the two vertical stomach muscles have drifted apart, the surgeon can also stitch the tissue between them together, which is called plication.
A mini tummy tuck treats only the area below the belly button through a shorter scar and suits a small, low pouch of loose skin. A full tummy tuck leaves a long, low scar across the lower tummy that fades over 12 to 18 months but does not disappear.
Two things only surgery does: removing a fold of skin that hangs, and repairing a wide muscle separation. SkinRev Lab does not perform surgery, and IN Eternity Clinic does not perform tummy tucks; a plastic surgeon is the right person to assess you for an abdominoplasty.
Self-check
Skin, fat or muscle: what your tummy is made of
Most soft tummies are a mix of layers, and each needs a different tool. Check standing in front of a mirror, then sitting and leaning forward.
| What you notice | Likely main layer | What usually helps |
|---|---|---|
| A thick, soft layer you can pinch | Subcutaneous fat | Non-surgical fat reduction; liposuction for larger amounts |
| Thin, crepey skin that wrinkles when you sit, with little to pinch | Mild to moderate skin laxity | Skin tightening with radiofrequency, microplasma or microwave |
| A tummy that pushes forward and a weak core | Low muscle tone | Core exercise; muscle stimulation once cleared |
| A ridge or dome down the middle when you sit up | Diastasis recti | Women's health physiotherapy first; surgery for a wide gap |
| A fold of skin that hangs over your waistband | Excess skin | A surgical opinion on abdominoplasty |
| Firm fullness you cannot pinch, mostly above the belly button | Visceral fat around the organs | Weight management; no device targets it |
Diastasis recti
Check for diastasis recti before anything else
Diastasis recti is a widening of the midline between the two vertical stomach muscles, stretched during pregnancy. It is very common: in a prospective study of 300 first-time mothers in Norway, a gap of two finger-breadths or more was found in 60% at six weeks after birth, 45% at six months and about a third at 12 months.
To check, lie on your back with knees bent, lift your head and shoulders slightly, and feel along the midline above, at and below the belly button. A gap of two or more finger-widths, a dome or cone along the middle, or pain is a reason to see a doctor or a women's health physiotherapist.
Guided core exercise is the usual first step and helps strength and function, but a 2023 meta-analysis found abdominal exercise narrowed the gap by only about 0.4 cm on average, which is not a clinically important change. A wide gap with a hanging tummy, or an umbilical hernia, is where surgical repair comes in. Electromagnetic muscle stimulation is not a treatment for diastasis recti.
Who suits surgery
Who a tummy tuck suits, and its risks
It is a bigger operation than most cosmetic procedures. In a US database of 25,478 abdominoplasties, major complications occurred in 4.0%, compared with 1.4% for other cosmetic operations; most were bleeding collections (haematoma), infections and blood clots. Risk was higher in men, people aged 55 or over and people with a BMI of 30 or more, and it rose with combined procedures, reaching 10.4% when liposuction and other body contouring were added.
The NHS describes a tummy tuck as usually suited to people at a healthy weight, not as a way to lose weight, and lists thick scars, wounds that do not heal and breathing problems among its possible complications. Ask who will perform the operation, where, what the quote includes, and how complications would be handled.
- A fold of loose skin hangs over the waistband when you stand.
- A wide muscle gap that domes when you sit up, or an umbilical hernia.
- Loose skin after a large weight loss, often in several areas.
- Your weight is at a healthy level and has been stable for some months, and you do not plan more pregnancies.
- You accept a long, permanent scar and several weeks of recovery in exchange for a one-step change.
Who suits non-surgical
Who suits non-surgical fat reduction, tightening and toning
Non-surgical treatments make sense when there is no hanging fold and no wide muscle gap, and the tummy is mainly a soft layer of pinchable fat, mild to moderate crepey skin, low muscle tone, or a mix. They work most predictably at a stable weight, several months after any pregnancy, once you have had your postnatal check and been cleared to exercise.
The change is moderate. A review of non-invasive body contouring devices described their effects as mild to moderate, for example 2 to 4 cm of circumference reduction over a full course, and a systematic review of radiofrequency devices found measurable improvement in body laxity with mostly minor, temporary side effects. That can be the right trade for someone who wants a firmer, smaller contour without surgery or time off; it is not a substitute for a tummy tuck when skin truly hangs.
Because fat, skin and muscle respond to different energies, plans often combine two treatments, for example fat reduction followed by tightening. Reducing fat alone under loose skin can make the looseness more visible.
Recovery compared
Recovery compared: surgery and non-surgical options
Recovery after surgery varies with the extent of the operation and your health, so ask your surgeon for a personal timeline. Non-surgical results vary too, and none of them gives a surgical-level change.
| Option | Needles or anaesthesia | Typical downtime | When change shows | Removes skin? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tummy tuck (plastic surgeon) | Usually general anaesthesia; long, low scar | About 4 to 6 weeks off work and exercise; support garment for about 6 weeks | Shape visible early; swelling and scars settle over months | Yes |
| SKINSHAPE microwave (SkinRev Lab) | None | Usually none; the area may feel warm | Over weeks; collagen remodelling continues up to three months after the course | No |
| SKINUSHAPE ultrasound (SkinRev Lab) | None | Usually none; brief warmth or mild flushing | Over the following weeks | No |
| SKINTIGHT microplasma (SkinRev Lab) | None; numbing cream available | Mild redness for a few hours on tightening settings | 6 to 12 weeks as collagen remodels | No |
| SKINSCULPT HIFEM (SkinRev Lab) | None; fully clothed | Possible muscle soreness the next day | Over a course | No |
| 4K Body Lift (IN Eternity Clinic) | Insulated microneedles under numbing cream | Tenderness and pinpoint marks for some days; bruising up to two weeks | Builds over about six weeks | No; firms mild laxity |
At SkinRev Lab
Non-surgical tummy options at SkinRev Lab
SkinRev Lab is a non-invasive aesthetic centre at #B1-28 CityLink Mall, linked underground to City Hall and Esplanade MRT. It does not do surgery, prescribe or inject. Each option is performed by an Aesthetic Specialist after an assessment, and prices are per session, before GST.
Most plans are a course spaced a few weeks apart, and your Aesthetic Specialist sets out the zones and the total before anything is booked. If what we see belongs with a surgeon, such as a hanging fold or a midline bulge, you are told at the first visit.
- SKINSHAPE: Miglou UHF microwave contouring for a soft layer of pinchable fat, with some warming of the skin above. About 30 minutes per zone; S$288 per 15 × 15 cm zone, first zone S$88. A full abdomen is usually two zones.
- SKINUSHAPE: guided ultrasound on the Alma PrimeX for deeper, more compact fat; it reduces contour rather than tightening skin. S$288 per zone, first zone S$88.
- SKINTIGHT (body): Alma PrimeX microplasma for loose, crepey abdominal skin and texture. About 30 minutes; S$588 per 15 × 15 cm zone.
- SKINSCULPT (tummy): HIFEM electromagnetic muscle stimulation from a 36 cm plate, fully clothed, for abdominal tone and core strength. About 30 minutes; S$288 per region, first region S$68. Have your postnatal check and any muscle gap assessed first.
Doctor-led
4K Body Lift: Dr Sin Yong's doctor-led option
When fat and mild laxity sit together in a defined pocket, such as a lower tummy pouch after pregnancy, a doctor-performed treatment may suit better. 4K Body Lift is one of Dr Sin Yong's signature protocols, performed by him at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT. Insulated radiofrequency microneedles on the CLASSYS Secret Duo platform heat the fat compartment and then the deeper skin in the same visit, under numbing cream.
Expect tenderness, mild swelling and pinpoint marks for some days, with bruising that can take up to two weeks to fade; contour change builds over about six weeks. It is not a weight-loss treatment and does not replace surgery for heavy, overhanging skin or a wide muscle gap. Onda Pro, a 2.45 GHz microwave treatment for fat with mild laxity, is also performed there. Both are priced at consultation by the clinic; WhatsApp +65 8815 3008.
Evidence
What the research says, honestly
The evidence for non-surgical tummy treatments is real but modest, and much of it comes from small studies, often without a control group and sometimes linked to device makers. In a 22-person MRI study of four HIFEM sessions on the abdomen, fat thickness fell by about 19%, muscle thickness rose by about 15% and the gap between the muscles narrowed by about 10% at two months; it was small and had no control group.
Surgery gives a larger, one-step change but carries a higher complication rate than most cosmetic operations. The decision is less about which is better and more about which layer is the problem: a hanging fold and a wide gap point to a surgeon, while pinchable fat, crepey skin and low tone point to non-surgical options. Individual results vary.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
How much is a tummy tuck in Singapore?
Tummy tucks are priced by plastic surgeons, usually as a package covering the surgeon's, anaesthetist's and hospital or day-surgery fees. The total depends on whether it is a mini or full abdominoplasty and whether liposuction or muscle repair is included, so ask for an itemised written quote. SkinRev Lab and IN Eternity Clinic do not perform tummy tucks.
Can I get tummy tuck results without surgery?
Not if your skin hangs in a fold or the muscle gap is wide; only surgery removes skin and repairs muscle. For pinchable fat, mild to moderate loose skin and low tone, non-surgical treatments can give a firmer, smaller contour over weeks to months, but the change is moderate.
How long is tummy tuck recovery?
The NHS advises about four to six weeks off work and exercise, with a support garment or tummy-control pants for about six weeks, and raised scars fading over 12 to 18 months. Your surgeon will give you a personal timeline. Non-surgical treatments usually allow a return to work the same day.
Can non-surgical treatments fix diastasis recti?
No. Muscle stimulation can support tone and core strength, but it does not close a wide gap, and a 2023 meta-analysis found exercise narrowed the gap only slightly. Have the gap assessed by a doctor or women's health physiotherapist; a wide gap or a hernia may need surgical repair.
Is a tummy tuck worth it after pregnancy?
It can be if you have a hanging fold of skin or a wide muscle gap, have finished having children and are at a stable, healthy weight. If your tummy is mostly soft fat and mild looseness, non-surgical options are a reasonable first step. Most providers advise waiting at least several months after delivery.
What is the difference between a mini and a full tummy tuck?
A mini tummy tuck removes a small amount of skin below the belly button through a shorter scar. A full tummy tuck removes more skin and fat, repositions the belly button, often repairs the muscles, and leaves a longer scar across the lower tummy. Which suits you depends on how much loose skin sits above the belly button.
Should I lose weight before a tummy tuck or body contouring?
Ideally, yes: reach a weight you can keep first. Surgery carries more risk at a higher BMI, and non-surgical contouring works most predictably on stubborn areas at a stable weight. Fat deep inside the abdomen does not respond to any device; that is a weight-management question.
Does SkinRev Lab do tummy tucks?
No. SkinRev Lab is a non-invasive aesthetic centre and does not do surgery. It offers SKINSHAPE, SKINUSHAPE, SKINTIGHT and SKINSCULPT, and will tell you at assessment if your tummy needs a surgical opinion instead.
How much does non-surgical tummy treatment cost at SkinRev Lab?
SKINSHAPE and SKINUSHAPE are S$288 per 15 × 15 cm zone (first zone S$88), SKINSCULPT is S$288 per region (first region S$68) and SKINTIGHT is S$588 per zone, per session before GST. A full abdomen is usually two zones. 4K Body Lift at IN Eternity Clinic is priced at consultation.
