Medical weight management is a doctor-supervised programme, not a slimming treatment. If you are searching for medical weight management Singapore options, you are probably past the stage of quick diets and want a proper look at what is going on. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong starts with an assessment of your weight history, health, medicines, sleep and eating patterns, plus measurements and blood tests, before suggesting anything.

The plan that follows centres on nutrition, activity, sleep and habits, set at a pace you can sustain. Where appropriate, and only after a medical review, a doctor-prescribed weight-management medicine may be considered as one part of the plan. Where it would help, referral to a dietitian, an endocrinologist, a psychologist or a weight-loss surgeon is arranged. Body contouring treatments are separate; they reshape areas at a stable weight and are not a substitute for this.

How it works

The mechanism,
in plain English

Asian populations tend to develop diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease at a lower body mass index (BMI) than European populations. For that reason, a World Health Organization expert consultation identified public health action points along the BMI scale, and Singapore's guidelines use 23 kg/m² as the point where health risk starts to rise and 27.5 kg/m² as the point of high risk. Waist size matters too, because fat around the abdomen is more closely linked to metabolic problems than weight alone.

Obesity is a long-term condition, shaped by genes, hormones, sleep, stress, medicines and environment, not just willpower. Even a modest, steady weight loss can improve blood sugar, blood pressure and blood fats. When weight falls, the body responds by increasing appetite and lowering energy use, which is why regain is common. A medical programme plans for this with regular reviews, adjusting the approach over months rather than chasing a fast number on the scale.

“The aim is better health you can keep, not a fast drop on the scale — and any medicine is a tool within a plan, never the plan itself.”

Is it right for you

Who it suits,
and who it does not

This suits adults whose BMI is in the increased-risk range for Asians, especially with weight-related problems such as prediabetes, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, fatty liver, sleep apnoea, joint pain or polycystic ovary syndrome. It also suits people who have dieted repeatedly and regained, those whose weight changed after starting a medicine or around menopause, and anyone who wants their weight looked at by a doctor rather than a sales counter.

This programme is for adults; children and teenagers need specialist paediatric care. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy soon need a different approach, and weight-management medicines are generally avoided at those times. People with a current or past eating disorder need specialist support first. Some personal or family medical histories rule out certain medicines, which is why a full review comes first. Anyone wanting fast slimming for an event, or a medicine without monitoring, will not find that here.

What to expect

Consultation, session
and aftercare

The first visit with Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic covers your weight history, previous attempts, eating pattern, activity, sleep, stress, medical conditions, family history and current medicines. Height, weight, waist and blood pressure are measured, and blood tests are arranged. Once results are back, you agree realistic goals and a plan: nutrition and activity changes, sleep and behaviour strategies, and whether any medicine or referral makes sense.

If a doctor-prescribed weight-management medicine is considered, its likely benefits, common side effects, cost and expected duration are explained before you decide, and you are monitored at each review. Reviews track weight, waist, blood pressure, side effects and repeat blood tests where needed, and the plan is adjusted as you go. Progress is usually gradual. Because weight tends to return when support stops, the programme plans for the long term from the start.

What the research says

The evidence,
with sources

The WHO expert consultation on BMI in Asian populations concluded that a substantial proportion of Asian people are at high risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at BMIs below the international overweight cut-off, and proposed action points including 23 and 27.5 kg/m². Singapore's HPB–MOH clinical practice guidelines on obesity set out evidence-based assessment and treatment for doctors here, from lifestyle intervention to medicines and surgery.

In the Look AHEAD study of over 5,000 adults with type 2 diabetes, modest weight loss at one year was associated with meaningful improvements in blood sugar, blood pressure and blood fats, with larger losses bringing greater benefit. Equally important, when a weight-management medicine and its accompanying lifestyle programme were stopped in a large study extension, most of the lost weight returned within a year — strong support for long-term, supervised medical weight management Singapore patients can sustain.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Medical weight management Singapore: who is it for?

It is for adults whose weight is affecting their health, or likely to. For Asians, health risk starts rising from a BMI of about 23 kg/m², and is high from 27.5 kg/m², so many people qualify even if they would not call themselves overweight. It is particularly useful if you have prediabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver or a history of dieting and regaining.

How much does medical weight management cost?

Pricing is given at consultation at IN Eternity Clinic. The cost depends on which tests are needed, how often you are reviewed and whether any medicine is prescribed, which carries its own cost. Dr Sin Yong explains every part of the plan and its cost before you commit, so there are no surprises later.

Is this just a weight-loss injection?

No. A doctor-prescribed weight-management medicine is one possible part of a plan, considered only after a full medical review and only where it is appropriate. Many people do well without one. The core of the programme is assessment, realistic goals, changes to eating, activity and sleep, and regular monitoring. Medicine, where used, works alongside that, not instead of it.

How fast will I lose weight?

There is no promised rate. A steady, modest loss that you can maintain usually does more for your health than a rapid drop that comes back. Progress depends on your starting point, health conditions, medicines and the plan you follow. Reviews look at waist, blood pressure and blood tests as well as weight, because those numbers often improve before the scale changes much.

What happens if I stop the programme?

Weight tends to return when support or treatment stops, because the body pushes back against weight loss. Studies show that when a weight-management medicine and its lifestyle programme are stopped, most of the lost weight comes back within a year. That is why the plan is built for the long term, with a gradual step-down rather than an abrupt end.

Can body contouring replace weight management?

No. Treatments such as fat freezing, Onda Pro or 4K Body Lift reshape stubborn areas in people who are already close to a stable, healthy weight. They do not change overall weight or health risk. If weight is affecting your health, medical weight management comes first; contouring can be considered later for any areas that remain.
