Facelift in Singapore surgical or non-surgical, and what each can really lift

A facelift can mean an operation with a plastic surgeon or a course of energy, thread or injectable treatments. Here is how the two routes differ in lift, downtime, how long results last and cost, and how to tell which one your face needs.

Quick answer

  • A facelift in Singapore is either surgical, where a plastic surgeon lifts the deeper tissue and removes loose skin, or non-surgical, using energy devices, threads or fillers. Surgery gives the largest and longest-lasting change but needs weeks of recovery; non-surgical face lifting treatments give a smaller, gradual lift with little downtime and need maintenance.
  • In a study of 50 facelift patients, most of the jowl correction was still present 5.5 years later and 76% were judged to look younger than before surgery. In a database of 11,300 facelifts, 1.8% had a major complication, most often a collection of blood under the skin (haematoma).
  • Non-surgical options lift by millimetres: a meta-analysis of focused ultrasound (HIFU) found a moderate effect, and a review of thread lifts found limited durability in most studies. They suit early to moderate sagging; heavy, folded skin is surgical territory.
  • SkinRev Lab does not perform surgery. It offers SKINLIFT®, a needle-free ultrasound lift at S$888 for the face and S$488 for the double chin per session before GST, and VF Lift, performed by Dr Sin Yong himself and priced at consultation. HIFU, radiofrequency, threads and fillers are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, priced at consultation.

The basics

Facelift in Singapore: two very different routes

A surgical facelift, or rhytidectomy, is an operation. A plastic surgeon makes incisions around the ears, lifts and tightens the deeper layer of muscle and fibrous tissue called the SMAS, repositions fat and removes excess skin. It is often combined with a neck lift or eyelid surgery, and it is the only option that actually takes loose skin away.

A non-surgical facelift is an umbrella term rather than one treatment. Energy devices such as focused ultrasound and radiofrequency heat collagen so that it contracts and regrows; absorbable threads hold sagging tissue higher; fillers and collagen stimulators replace the lost volume that lets the face drop. Each works on a different layer, so the right choice depends on what is causing the sag.

Most faces age in several layers at once: skin thins, fat pads shrink or slide, ligaments loosen and bone slowly recedes. A plan that names the layer first is more likely to look natural than one that starts from a machine or a procedure.

Surgery

Surgical facelift and mini facelift: what is involved

Facelift surgery is performed by a plastic surgeon, usually under general anaesthesia or sedation. Techniques differ mainly in how deep the surgeon works: SMAS plication tightens the layer with stitches, while SMAS flap and deep-plane techniques release and lift it. Most people need about two to four weeks before swelling and bruising settle enough for social plans, and the face keeps refining for several months.

A mini facelift, or short-scar facelift, uses a shorter incision and less dissection and mainly treats the jowls and lower face. A systematic review of one widely used short-scar method, the MACS lift, found no major complications across 739 patients and relatively high satisfaction, but a limited effect on the neck, so a separate neck procedure is often added.

Risks are real but uncommon. In a prospective database of 11,300 facelifts, 1.8% had a major complication within 30 days, mainly haematoma (1.1%) or infection (0.3%); being male, a BMI of 25 or more and combining several operations raised the risk. A meta-analysis of 183 studies found temporary facial nerve weakness in roughly 1 to 2% with some techniques.

Non-surgical

Non-surgical face lifting treatments, layer by layer

Each non-surgical face lifting treatment does one of three jobs: tighten the tissue you have, reposition it, or replace lost volume. None of them removes skin, and most build their effect over weeks to months.

  • Focused ultrasound (HIFU): heats tiny points in the dermis and at the SMAS depth, about 4.5 mm on the face, so collagen contracts and regrows over two to three months.
  • Monopolar radiofrequency (RF): warms a broader volume of dermis and the fibrous strands under the skin; sometimes combined with ultrasound in one plan.
  • Laser tightening: scanned laser heat firms skin along the jaw and can remodel small pockets of fat.
  • Thread lift: absorbable barbed threads reposition sagging tissue mechanically, and some collagen forms as they dissolve.
  • Fillers and collagen biostimulators: restore lost structure in the cheeks, temples, chin and jawline, which can lift the lower face indirectly.

Side by side

Surgical vs non-surgical face lift compared

These are general patterns, not a plan. Results vary with age, skin quality, bone structure, weight stability, sun exposure and smoking, and many people combine more than one approach over time.

At SkinRev Lab

SKINLIFT and VF Lift at SkinRev Lab

SKINLIFT® is SkinRev Lab's needle-free face lifting session. It uses multi-sequential focused ultrasound (N Pulse-Ultrasound) aimed at the support layers beneath the skin, takes about 30 minutes with no numbing, and is done by an Aesthetic Specialist rather than a doctor. SKINLIFT® Face (jowls, nasolabial folds, jawline) is S$888 and SKINLIFT® Double Chin is S$488 per session, before GST; a short course is planned at assessment.

VF Lift, short for Vertical Facelift, is Dr Sin Yong's own protocol, which he performs himself at SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall. It applies 6.78 MHz monopolar radiofrequency along vertical lines planned against the way the face has dropped, with focused ultrasound added where a deeper layer needs support. A face-and-neck session takes about 60 to 90 minutes, downtime is usually minimal, and it is priced at consultation.

Both are energy treatments, so the change is gradual and modest. Neither removes loose skin or replaces lost volume. If your sagging is beyond what they can help, you will be told so and pointed towards a doctor's or surgeon's opinion.

At IN Eternity Clinic

HIFU, RF, threads and fillers with Dr Sin Yong

Medical face lifting is performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT. Options include medical HIFU, Svelte Touch (radiofrequency and ultrasound together), Time Freeze Laser LCLR® for the jowls and jawline, and RVR ProLift, which places absorbable threads along vertical vectors, with energy-based lifting where planned.

Where the face has lost volume rather than slid down, dermal fillers or collagen biostimulators restore support in the cheeks, temples, chin and jawline. Dr Sin Yong's 3D Facial Reconstruction plans energy treatment at three depths in one course. All of these are priced at consultation by the clinic after an assessment; WhatsApp +65 8815 3008.

SkinRev Lab itself does not inject, prescribe or perform medical procedures, and facelift surgery is not among the treatments described here. If surgery would serve you better, Dr Sin Yong will say so and explain when a plastic surgeon's opinion makes sense.

Evidence

What the research says about each route

For surgery, some of the clearest long-term data come from follow-up studies. In 50 patients assessed 5.5 years after a facelift, the jowl had been raised by about 6 mm with 21% relapse; the jowl, nasolabial and marionette areas stayed well corrected, the neck relapsed partly, and 76% were still judged to look younger than before surgery.

For energy devices, a meta-analysis of 17 HIFU studies with 477 people found a moderate improvement and short-term safety, with an average pain score of about 4 out of 10, but most studies did not follow people up for long. A three-dimensional scanning study of 30 Korean women treated with 6.78 MHz monopolar RF measured lifts of roughly 1.3 to 2.8 mm across facial areas one month later.

For threads, a systematic review found little robust evidence added over a decade and only limited durability of the lift in most studies; the two strongly positive studies were sponsored by thread manufacturers. The honest summary: surgery gives a larger, longer-lasting change; non-surgical treatments give millimetres of change and need upkeep, with far less downtime.

Choosing

Who suits surgery, and who suits a non-surgical lift

A simple self-check: in a mirror, gently lift the skin in front of your ears upwards. If a fold of loose skin gathers along the jaw or neck, or your jowls hang below the jawline, compare your options against surgery, not only against other machines.

  • Surgery tends to suit heavy jowls, folds of loose skin, marked neck laxity or bands, and people who want one larger change and can take several weeks off.
  • A non-surgical lift tends to suit early to moderate sagging, a softening jawline, people who cannot take time off, and maintenance before or after surgery.
  • Fillers or biostimulators may come first for hollow cheeks or temples, a flat mid-face or a set-back chin, where lost support is what makes the face drop.
  • See a doctor before any aesthetic plan if one side of the face has changed suddenly, if there is a new lump, or if you have lost weight quickly without trying.

Cost

Face lift Singapore price: what drives the cost

Prices vary widely, and a single quoted number rarely tells you the full cost. For surgery, the total usually covers the surgeon's fee, the anaesthetist, the facility or hospital, any overnight stay and review visits, and it rises if a neck lift, eyelid surgery or fat grafting is added.

For non-surgical face lifting, the cost depends on the device and its consumables, the number of areas, how many sessions a course needs and how often maintenance is repeated. Compare the cost of a realistic plan over three to five years rather than the price of one session.

At SkinRev Lab, SKINLIFT® Face is S$888 and SKINLIFT® Double Chin is S$488 per session, before GST. VF Lift, and all medical treatments at IN Eternity Clinic including HIFU, threads and fillers, are priced at consultation after Dr Sin Yong has assessed your face.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

How much does a facelift cost in Singapore?

It depends on the route. Surgical facelift fees cover the surgeon, anaesthetist and facility and vary with the technique and what is combined. Non-surgical costs depend on the device, areas and number of sessions. At SkinRev Lab, SKINLIFT® Face is S$888 per session before GST; medical treatments at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation.

What is the difference between a surgical and a non-surgical facelift?

Surgery lifts the deeper SMAS layer and removes excess skin, giving the largest and longest-lasting change, with weeks of recovery. Non-surgical treatments tighten, reposition or add volume without incisions; the change is smaller and gradual, with little downtime, and needs maintenance.

How long does a facelift last?

A surgical facelift lasts years, though the face keeps ageing: in one study most jowl correction remained 5.5 years later. Non-surgical lifts last months, so maintenance is usually planned, and thread lifts soften as the threads dissolve.

What is a mini facelift?

A mini or short-scar facelift is a smaller operation with a shorter incision, mainly for the jowls and lower face. Reviews report high satisfaction and few major complications but a limited effect on the neck. It is still surgery, performed by a plastic surgeon.

Does a non-surgical facelift really work?

For the right face, yes, but the change is modest. A meta-analysis of HIFU found a moderate improvement, and a radiofrequency study measured lifts of about one to three millimetres. It suits early to moderate sagging and cannot remove loose skin.

What age is right for a facelift?

There is no set age. Non-surgical lifting is often considered when the jawline first softens, commonly in the late thirties or forties. Surgery is usually considered when there is loose, folded skin or neck laxity. Your anatomy matters more than your age.

What is the downtime after a facelift?

After surgery, most people need about two to four weeks before social plans, with swelling settling over months. Energy treatments usually have little or no downtime, threads cause two to three days of swelling and possible bruising, and fillers a few days of swelling.

Can HIFU replace a facelift?

Not for heavy sagging. HIFU tightens and gives a small lift for mild to moderate laxity, but it cannot remove excess skin or reposition tissue the way surgery does. If you can pinch a fold of loose skin along the jaw, a surgical opinion is worth having.

Does SkinRev Lab do facelift surgery?

No. SkinRev Lab is a non-invasive centre offering SKINLIFT®, and Dr Sin Yong performs VF Lift there. Medical treatments such as HIFU, threads and fillers are performed by him at IN Eternity Clinic, Pacific Plaza. Facelift surgery is performed by plastic surgeons.
