HydraFacial vs a regular facial how they differ, and which suits your skin

A HydraFacial and a classic hands-on facial can both leave skin cleaner and fresher, but they get there in different ways. Here is how the steps, extraction, add-ons, results and cost compare, so you can book the one that fits your skin and your budget.

Quick answer

  • A HydraFacial is a machine-led facial: a vortex tip cleanses and gently peels the skin, lifts out blackheads with suction and infuses serum, in three steps over about 45 minutes. A regular facial is hands-on: a therapist cleanses, exfoliates, often steams, extracts by hand, massages and applies a mask, usually over 60 to 90 minutes.
  • HydraFacial is more consistent from session to session, extracts by suction rather than squeezing, and can add boosters such as the JLo Beauty Booster, Perk Lip and Perk Eye. A regular facial offers more massage and relaxation and can target individual stubborn plugs, but results depend heavily on the therapist, and over-squeezing can leave marks, especially in Asian skin.
  • Neither lifts sagging skin, clears melasma or fills acne scars. The research on hydradermabrasion is small: short studies show a smoother, more hydrated surface and fewer acne lesions, with no measured collagen change at two weeks.
  • At SkinRev Lab, HydraFacial Syndeo is S$288 (Signature), S$388 (Deluxe) or S$438 (Platinum) before GST, with a first-timer rate on every tier: ask at the counter. The JLo Beauty Booster is +S$68; Perk Lip and Perk Eye are priced at the counter.

Regular facial

What happens in a regular facial

A classic facial is built around the therapist. The steps vary from salon to salon, but most follow a similar order, and the quality depends on the products used and on the therapist's skill and judgement.

  • Consultation and a look at your skin, sometimes under a magnifying lamp.
  • Double cleanse to remove make-up, sunscreen and oil.
  • Exfoliation with a scrub, enzyme or mild acid, often with steam to soften plugs.
  • Manual extraction of blackheads and whiteheads, by hand or with a sterile tool.
  • Facial, neck and shoulder massage.
  • A mask chosen for your skin, then serum, moisturiser and sunscreen.

HydraFacial

What happens in a HydraFacial

HydraFacial is a branded hydradermabrasion system. Its Vortex-Fusion handpiece uses a spiral action to cleanse, exfoliate, extract and infuse at the same time, through patented, disposable HydroPeel tips. Syndeo is the company's current device.

Every tier follows the same three steps. First, cleanse and peel with a mild glycolic and salicylic acid blend. Second, extract and hydrate: gentle suction loosens and lifts blackheads and congestion while the skin is bathed in serum. Third, fuse and protect with a serum blend chosen for your skin. Deluxe adds a targeted booster and LED; Platinum adds further steps on top.

Because the device runs the same protocol each time, results are more predictable from one visit to the next, and from one therapist to another, than with a fully manual facial.

Extraction

Extraction: suction vs squeezing

Extraction is where the two differ most. In a manual facial, the therapist presses out each plug. Done well, with clean technique and restraint, it can clear stubborn individual blackheads and whiteheads. Done with too much force, it can rupture the pore wall, push contents deeper and leave inflammation, dark marks or scars. In Asian skin, those dark marks, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, can take weeks to months to fade.

HydraFacial uses suction instead. It is very good at clearing widespread, shallow congestion across the nose, chin and cheeks with little trauma, but it is less able to shift a single deep, hardened plug. Neither method should be used on inflamed, painful or cystic spots, milia or sebaceous filaments; those need a doctor or should be left alone.

Blackheads return because oil glands keep working, especially in Singapore's heat and humidity. Whichever facial you choose, a sensible home routine matters as much as the extraction.

Add-ons

Boosters, Perk Lip and Perk Eye

A HydraFacial booster is a concentrated serum infused through the handpiece during the hydration step, aimed at one concern. In a regular facial, the equivalent is an ampoule, a specialised mask or LED added by the therapist.

At SkinRev Lab, Deluxe and Platinum already include a targeted booster chosen at consultation, plus LED. The add-ons below can go with any tier.

  • JLo Beauty Booster, +S$68 before GST on any tier: developed by HydraFacial with JLo Beauty, with olive leaf extract, niacinamide and fermented adaptogens; for dull, dehydrated skin.
  • Perk Lip, priced at the counter: about 15 minutes with HydraFacial's roller-flex applicator to exfoliate and hydrate the lips, with take-home product.
  • Perk Eye, priced at the counter: the same applicator worked lightly around the eye area with a soothing serum, for a tired, puffy look; also about 15 minutes.
  • If congestion is the main issue, a higher tier usually helps more than a booster.

Results and evidence

What results to expect, and what the research shows

Both kinds of facial give an immediate fresher look: cleaner pores, smoother texture and better hydration for a few days. Neither changes deeper structure. Neither lifts sagging skin, clears melasma or fills pitted acne scars.

Research on hydradermabrasion is small but useful. In an early study of 20 women, six device treatments with an antioxidant serum improved skin measures, while applying the same serum by hand for six sessions produced no detectable change. An imaging study of eight volunteers found a thinner, more even outer layer after treatment, but no visible change in dermal collagen at two weeks. A 12-week study of 20 adults with mild to moderate acne found more had clear or almost clear skin after six clarifying HydraFacial treatments; it had no control group and one author worked for the manufacturer.

For regular facials, the best-documented benefit is relaxation: in one study, 45 minutes of facial massage reduced anxiety and negative mood in 32 women. That is worth something, even if it does not show up as a skin measurement.

Price

What each costs, and how to compare fairly

Regular facials in Singapore range widely in price, from low trial offers to long spa facials. Compare like with like: how many minutes you are actually treated, which products and devices are used, whether extraction, masks or LED cost extra, whether the price includes GST, and what you pay from the second visit.

A low trial price is fine on its own. Be cautious if it comes with pressure to buy a package on the day. The first-timer rate at SkinRev Lab applies once per new client, on the first session, and our price list attaches no package to it.

Choosing

Who suits which

  • Blackheads across the nose and chin, oily or congested skin: HydraFacial, every four to six weeks, is a common rhythm.
  • Dull, dehydrated skin before an event: HydraFacial two to five days before, with the JLo Beauty Booster or Deluxe for a targeted booster.
  • A few stubborn, deep blackheads or whiteheads: a careful manual extraction may shift them; ask that inflamed spots are left alone.
  • You mainly want to relax and be pampered: a hands-on facial with massage suits you better than a device facial.
  • Sensitive, reactive or redness-prone skin: start gently. SKINLDM at SkinRev Lab is designed for sensitive skin; with HydraFacial, start with Signature and say what your skin reacts to.
  • Inflamed, painful or cystic acne, melasma, acne scars or sagging: see a doctor first; neither facial treats these.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Is HydraFacial better than a normal facial?

Not better for everyone; different. HydraFacial is more consistent and extracts by suction, so it suits congestion, blackheads and dehydration with little downtime. A regular facial offers more massage and hands-on extraction of stubborn plugs, but results vary more with the therapist.

Does HydraFacial include extraction?

Yes. Every HydraFacial tier includes suction extraction through the Vortex-Fusion tip, which lifts blackheads and congestion without squeezing. It is less suited to single deep, hardened plugs, and no facial should extract inflamed or cystic spots.

Is HydraFacial worth the money?

It can be if congestion, dullness or dehydration are your main concerns and you value a consistent protocol and same-day results. If you mainly want relaxation, a hands-on facial may be better value. Compare on time, steps, products and GST, not the headline price.

How often should I get a HydraFacial or a regular facial?

Every four to six weeks is a common rhythm for both. More frequent extraction is not better and can irritate the skin. Budget for the rhythm you will actually keep.

Can HydraFacial cause breakouts?

It is uncommon. Some people get a few spots in the days after any facial, especially if skin was very congested or a new product was used. If you get painful or widespread breakouts, tell the therapist and see a doctor if needed.

Which is better for blackheads, HydraFacial or a manual facial?

For widespread, shallow blackheads across the nose and chin, HydraFacial's suction clears them with less trauma. For a few stubborn, deep plugs, careful manual extraction may work better. Blackheads return either way, so home care matters.

Is HydraFacial suitable for sensitive skin?

Often, yes. It is gentler than heavy manual extraction, but the peel step can sting reactive skin. Start with Signature and tell the therapist what your skin reacts to. For very reactive skin, SKINLDM at SkinRev Lab is designed for sensitive skin.

How much is HydraFacial in Singapore at SkinRev Lab?

Signature S$288, Deluxe S$388 and Platinum S$438 per 45-minute session before GST (S$313.92, S$422.92 and S$477.42 with 9% GST). New clients have a first-timer rate on every tier; ask at the counter or on WhatsApp.

What are Perk Lip and Perk Eye?

They are HydraFacial add-ons that use a roller-flex applicator for small areas: Perk Lip exfoliates and hydrates the lips, and Perk Eye treats the skin around the eyes with a soothing serum. Each takes about 15 minutes and comes with take-home product; pricing is given at the counter.
