Microdermabrasion in Singapore and how it compares with HydraFacial and peels
Microdermabrasion, diamond peel, hydradermabrasion and chemical peel all promise smoother, brighter skin, but they exfoliate in different ways. Here is how each works, what the research actually shows, who each suits, and the risks for Asian skin.

Quick answer
- Microdermabrasion in Singapore is a machine exfoliation that buffs away the top layer of dead skin cells, either with a stream of fine crystals (crystal microdermabrasion) or a diamond-tipped wand (diamond microdermabrasion, often sold as a "diamond peel"), with suction to lift the debris away. It is a superficial treatment for rough, dull skin, and usually leaves only mild redness for a few hours.
- Hydradermabrasion, such as HydraFacial, swaps the abrasive for liquid and a suction tip, extracts blackheads by suction and infuses serum. Chemical peels use an acid instead of friction, and their depth, and downtime, depends on the acid and its strength.
- The evidence for microdermabrasion is modest: small studies show smoother texture and some improvement in mottled pigment, but little effect on wrinkles, acne or deep scars. In Asian skin, over-aggressive exfoliation can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
- SkinRev Lab does not offer microdermabrasion or standalone chemical peels. It offers HydraFacial Syndeo at CityLink Mall: Signature S$288, Deluxe S$388 and Platinum S$438 before GST, with a first-timer rate at the counter.
The basics
Microdermabrasion in Singapore: what it actually does
Microdermabrasion is mechanical exfoliation. A handpiece sands the outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, while a vacuum lifts away the loosened cells. The skin feels smoother and looks brighter for a while because the dull, rough surface layer has been removed.
Despite the name, a "diamond peel" is not a chemical peel. It is diamond microdermabrasion: no acid is involved, and the "peel" refers only to the surface being buffed off. Microdermabrasion is a superficial treatment and usually needs a series of sessions for a visible change.
Crystal vs diamond
Crystal microdermabrasion vs diamond peel
Crystal microdermabrasion blasts fine crystals, usually aluminium oxide, across the skin through a wand and vacuums them back up with the dead cells. The strength is set by the crystal flow and the suction. Loose crystals can irritate the eyes if they are not handled carefully, and they need to be cleaned off the face afterwards.
Diamond microdermabrasion uses a wand with a diamond-coated tip instead of loose crystals. The coarseness of the tip and the suction set the depth, there are no particles left on the skin, and it is easier to control around the eyes and nose. In practice, the operator's technique and settings matter more than which type is used.
Side by side
Microdermabrasion vs HydraFacial vs chemical peel
All three are surface treatments. None of them lifts sagging skin, clears melasma or fills deep acne scars.
| Microdermabrasion (crystal or diamond) | Hydradermabrasion (HydraFacial) | Chemical peel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it exfoliates | Crystals or a diamond tip abrade the surface, with suction | Liquid and a vortex suction tip, with mild glycolic and salicylic acids | An acid solution applied for a set time |
| Extraction | No | Yes, by suction | No |
| Serum infusion | No | Yes | No |
| Depth | Superficial | Superficial | Superficial to deep, depending on the acid |
| Typical downtime | Mild redness for a few hours | Little to none; make-up the same day | None to several days of flaking for superficial peels; one to three weeks for medium and deep |
| Often suits | Rough texture, dullness | Congestion, blackheads, dullness, dehydration | Pigment, texture, acne marks (by depth) |
| PIH risk in Asian skin | Low if gentle; higher if aggressive | Low | Rises with depth; medium and deep peels need a doctor |
| At SkinRev Lab | Not offered | HydraFacial Syndeo, S$288 to S$438 before GST | No standalone peels |
vs HydraFacial
Microdermabrasion vs HydraFacial
Hydradermabrasion was developed as a crystal-free form of microdermabrasion: instead of abrading the skin dry, it flushes liquid over the surface while a suction tip exfoliates and lifts out oil and dead skin, then infuses serum. HydraFacial is one branded system of this kind, with its own single-use tips, serums and protocol. Many "aqua peel" or "hydra facial" treatments use other machines.
In a study of 20 women, six hydradermabrasion treatments with an antioxidant serum thickened the epidermis and papillary dermis on biopsy and reduced fine lines, pore size and pigment, while the serum applied by hand did nothing measurable. A 2024 imaging study found the surface layer thinner straight after hydradermabrasion, recovering within two weeks. The studies are small and short.
The practical difference: microdermabrasion polishes; hydradermabrasion polishes more gently, clears pores by suction and hydrates. For congestion, blackheads or dehydrated skin, hydradermabrasion is usually the better fit. For a purely rough, dry surface, either can help.
vs chemical peels
Microdermabrasion vs chemical peels
A chemical peel uses an acid, such as glycolic, salicylic or trichloroacetic acid (TCA), to remove skin to a planned depth. Superficial peels are similar in depth to microdermabrasion; medium and deep peels go further and are medical procedures. A 2018 review noted that lasers have largely replaced deep peels, while superficial peels have become more popular and more varied.
Peels can reach pigment and acne marks that friction alone does not, which is why they are used for post-acne marks and some sun damage. The trade-off is a higher risk of irritation and PIH as depth rises, so in Asian skin they are started gently and stepped up only if the skin tolerates them.
Evidence
What the research shows, honestly
Microdermabrasion is popular, but the research is thin. A 2005 review found most studies small, with different protocols, machines and settings, and described a major gap between its popularity and the scientific data. A 2010 evidence-based review concluded that it can change the dermal matrix and improve contour irregularities, may help some topical medicines penetrate, but has a limited role in pigment problems and acne.
In a study of 14 patients treated over 12 to 14 weeks, people reported smoother skin, less mottled pigment and better overall appearance, but not fewer wrinkles; acne scars sometimes improved but needed deeper treatment. A split-face study of diamond microdermabrasion in 28 patients found the skin barrier recovered within two days, which supports spacing sessions at least a week apart. Individual results vary.
Suitability
Who microdermabrasion suits, and who should skip it
It suits people with rough, dull or slightly uneven skin who want a gentle surface polish and are happy with a gradual, modest change.
- Skip it on active, inflamed or cystic acne; abrasion can spread inflammation.
- Skip it during a rosacea flare, eczema, sunburn or any rash.
- Avoid treating over a cold sore, cut or broken skin.
- If you take or recently took oral acne tablets, or use strong prescription creams, ask a doctor first.
- Melasma, deep scars and sagging need a doctor's assessment, not microdermabrasion.
- If you tend to get dark marks after spots or scratches, ask for gentle settings and protect from the sun.
Risks
Risks in Asian skin, and how to keep them low
Common effects are redness, tightness and mild sensitivity for a few hours to a day. Too much suction or too many passes can cause abrasions, streaks of redness, small bruises or broken capillaries. In Asian skin, the main concern is PIH: any inflammation, from over-exfoliation to picking afterwards, can leave brown marks that take weeks or months to fade.
Keep the risk low by choosing gentle settings first, spacing sessions at least a week apart, not combining it with other exfoliants the same week, and using broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Singapore's UV is high all year, and freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
What is microdermabrasion?
A machine exfoliation that buffs off the top layer of dead skin cells with fine crystals or a diamond-tipped wand, while suction lifts the debris away. It smooths rough, dull skin and usually leaves only mild redness for a few hours.
Is a diamond peel the same as microdermabrasion?
Yes. A diamond peel is diamond microdermabrasion: a diamond-coated tip abrades the surface instead of loose crystals. It is not a chemical peel, because no acid is used.
Microdermabrasion vs HydraFacial: which is right for me?
For congestion, blackheads or dehydrated skin, HydraFacial usually suits better, because it extracts by suction and infuses serum as well as exfoliating. For a purely rough, dry surface, either can help. Neither treats melasma, sagging or deep scars.
Does SkinRev Lab offer microdermabrasion?
No. SkinRev Lab does not offer crystal or diamond microdermabrasion, or standalone chemical peels. It offers HydraFacial Syndeo, a hydradermabrasion facial, from S$288 before GST, with a first-timer rate at the counter.
Does microdermabrasion remove acne scars or pigmentation?
Not much. Studies show some improvement in mottled pigment and texture, but acne scars usually need deeper treatment, and reviews describe a limited role in pigment problems and acne. Deep scars and melasma need a doctor's assessment.
Is microdermabrasion safe for Asian skin?
Generally, when it is gentle. Aggressive suction or too many passes can cause abrasions and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Start with gentle settings, space sessions at least a week apart and use sunscreen daily.
How often can I do microdermabrasion?
Studies show the skin barrier takes about two days to recover, so sessions are usually spaced at least a week apart, often as a short series. More frequent treatment raises the risk of irritation.
Microdermabrasion or chemical peel: which is better for dull skin?
Both can brighten dull skin. Microdermabrasion polishes by friction with little downtime; a superficial peel uses acid and can reach acne marks and pigment a little better, with some flaking. Medium and deep peels are medical procedures.
