Guide · Aqua peel
Aqua peel vs HydraFacial the same idea, a different system
Aqua peel, hydra facial, hydradermabrasion: the names are used loosely in Singapore, and the treatments behind them vary. Here is what an aqua peel facial is, what makes a HydraFacial different, and how to tell which one you are being offered.

Quick answer
- An aqua peel facial is a generic hydradermabrasion treatment: a machine flushes liquid over the skin while a suction tip exfoliates and lifts out oil and dead skin.
- HydraFacial is one branded hydradermabrasion system: it uses the company's patented single-use HydroPeel tips, its Vortex-Fusion delivery and its own serums, and the company requires every provider to hold a trademark licence, with second-hand devices recertified.
- Both can leave skin cleaner, smoother and more hydrated for a while; the real differences are the device, tips, serums, protocol and consistency, so ask which machine is used, whether the tip is single-use and how long the session runs.
- SkinRev Lab at CityLink Mall offers HydraFacial Syndeo and holds HydraFacial's 2026 Certificate of Authenticity: Signature S$288, Deluxe S$388 and Platinum S$438 before GST, with a first-timer rate at the counter.
Definitions
What 'aqua peel' actually means
Hydradermabrasion is the general technique: liquid and suction work together to exfoliate the surface, loosen congestion and leave the skin hydrated. Salons market it under many names, including aqua peel, aqua facial, hydra facial and, in Chinese-speaking markets, 'small bubble' facial. Machines and serums vary widely from one provider to the next.
HydraFacial, written as one word, is a brand. It is a specific hydradermabrasion system made by one company, with its own tips, serums and protocols. So every HydraFacial is a kind of aqua peel, but most aqua peels are not HydraFacials.
Side by side
Generic aqua peel vs genuine HydraFacial
| Generic aqua peel | Genuine HydraFacial | |
|---|---|---|
| Device | Any of many hydradermabrasion machines | A HydraFacial system; Syndeo is the current generation |
| Tips | Vary; some are reusable | Patented single-use HydroPeel tips |
| Delivery | Water or solution with suction | Vortex-Fusion: a spiral action that cleanses, extracts and infuses at the same time |
| Serums | The provider's own choice | HydraFacial's own serums and boosters |
| Protocol | Set by each provider | Cleanse and peel, extract and hydrate, fuse and protect |
| Provider requirements | None specific to the brand | Trademark licence; second-hand devices must be recertified by the company |
| Price | Varies widely by provider | At SkinRev Lab: S$288, S$388 or S$438 before GST |
Evidence
What hydradermabrasion does, according to the research
The published evidence is small. An early study reported measured changes in skin after hydradermabrasion, alongside visible improvement in fine lines and pore size. An imaging study of eight volunteers found the outer dead-cell layer thinner straight after treatment and more even two weeks later, with no visible change in dermal collagen at two weeks. A 12-week study of 20 adults with mild to moderate acne found more had clear or almost-clear skin after six clarifying HydraFacial treatments, though it had no control group and one author worked for the manufacturer.
Taken together, the honest summary is this: hydradermabrasion reliably cleans, exfoliates and hydrates. There is no good evidence that it builds collagen, lifts the face or clears deep pigment, whichever machine is used.
How to check
How to check whether a HydraFacial is genuine
A provider confident in its set-up will not mind these questions. If nobody can name the device or the serums, you are probably being offered a different hydradermabrasion facial, which may still be pleasant but is not the HydraFacial system.
- Ask which device is used, and look for the HydraFacial name on the machine's screen.
- Watch the single-use HydroPeel tip being opened for you.
- Ask which HydraFacial serums and booster are included in your tier.
- Ask how long the session runs; a full protocol is not a 15-minute add-on.
- Ask for the price including GST before you start.
- Ask whether the provider holds a current certificate of authenticity.
Which to choose
When an aqua peel is fine, and when HydraFacial is worth it
A well-run aqua peel from a clean, careful salon can be a perfectly good cleansing facial, particularly if your main aim is a fresher look before an event. The machine matters less than hygiene, the therapist's skill and honesty about what the treatment can do.
HydraFacial is worth choosing when you want a consistent, documented protocol, genuine single-use tips and serums, and the option of targeted boosters. It costs more than many generic aqua peels, so it makes sense if you will use it regularly for congestion, dullness or dehydration.
- Choose either for: blackheads, congested pores, dull or dehydrated skin, a quick refresh.
- Choose HydraFacial for: a repeatable protocol, genuine consumables, and boosters for a specific concern.
- Choose neither for: sagging, acne scars, melasma, or painful cystic acne.
Limits
What neither treatment can do
When a concern needs more than a facial, SkinRev Lab passes your enquiry to IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, where Dr Sin Yong assesses it. Medical treatments there are priced at consultation by the clinic.
- Lift sagging skin or define the jawline.
- Fill pitted acne scars.
- Clear melasma, sun spots or Hori's naevus; they can brighten tone slightly, not remove defined pigment.
- Treat painful, cystic or scarring acne; that needs a doctor first.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
Is an aqua peel the same as a HydraFacial?
Not quite. Aqua peel is a general name for hydradermabrasion facials done on many different machines. HydraFacial is one branded system with its own patented tips, serums and protocol, and providers need a trademark licence from the company.
Which is better, an aqua peel or a HydraFacial?
Both can clean, exfoliate and hydrate the skin. HydraFacial offers a consistent protocol, genuine single-use tips and serums, and targeted boosters, at a higher price than many generic aqua peels. Hygiene and the therapist's skill matter as much as the machine.
How much is a HydraFacial at SkinRev Lab?
Signature S$288, Deluxe S$388 and Platinum S$438 per session, before GST, each about 45 minutes. A JLo Beauty Booster can be added for S$68. New clients have a first-timer rate on every tier, given at the counter or on WhatsApp.
How do I know if my HydraFacial is genuine?
Ask to see the device and its name, ask which HydraFacial serums and booster are used, and watch the single-use tip being opened. HydraFacial requires providers to hold a trademark licence and to recertify second-hand devices.
How often should I get an aqua peel or HydraFacial?
Every four to six weeks is a common rhythm for congestion or dullness. More often than every two weeks has no added benefit.
Is there downtime after an aqua peel or HydraFacial?
Usually none. Some people look slightly pink for a short while, and make-up can go on the same day. A spot or two can surface over the next few days as congestion clears.
Is an aqua peel good for acne?
It suits blackheads, whiteheads and mild acne, with inflamed spots worked around rather than extracted. Painful, cystic or scarring acne needs a doctor first.
Can an aqua peel or HydraFacial remove pigmentation?
No. They can brighten overall tone a little, especially with a brightening booster, but they do not remove sun spots, freckles or melasma. Defined pigment needs a doctor's assessment and usually a pigment laser.
