Facial extraction in Singapore manual or vacuum, and when to leave a spot alone

Extraction clears blackheads and congestion that cleansing alone cannot shift. Done gently, it makes pores look cleaner for a while; done badly, it leaves marks. Here is how the two methods differ, which SkinRev Lab facials include extraction, and when extraction is the wrong choice.

Quick answer

  • Extraction removes the plug of oil and dead skin from a blocked pore. It suits blackheads, whiteheads and mild congestion, not deep, painful or cystic spots.
  • Manual extraction uses pressure on each plug, by hand or with a sterile tool. Vacuum extraction, as in HydraFacial Syndeo, uses a Vortex-Fusion® tip and gentle suction to lift congestion while hydrating, without squeezing.
  • At SkinRev Lab, every HydraFacial Syndeo tier includes vacuum extraction (45 minutes, S$288 to S$438 before GST). In the Rejuran® PDRN Facial, extraction is listed in the 90-minute Singapore and Oriental Professional tiers (S$188 and S$208).
  • Blackheads come back because oil keeps flowing. A cleansing facial every four to six weeks, alongside a sensible home routine, is a common rhythm.
  • Milia, cysts and inflamed acne should not be squeezed. Those are for a doctor.

What extraction does

Blackheads, whiteheads and sebaceous filaments

A blackhead is a pore plugged with sebum and dead skin that has oxidised dark at the surface. A whitehead is a similar plug sitting under a thin layer of skin. Extraction clears these plugs, which usually makes pores look smaller and less dark for a time.

Not every dark dot on the nose is a blackhead. Sebaceous filaments are the normal lining of the pore: uniform grey-tan dots that refill within days of being cleared. They are supposed to be there, and trying to remove them for good damages the skin.

Pore size itself is largely genetic and cannot be permanently shrunk. Extraction changes what is in the pore, not the pore.

Two methods

Manual extraction vs vacuum extraction

Manual extraction is the traditional approach. The skin is cleansed and softened, then each plug is pressed out with gloved fingers or a sterile extractor tool. It can clear stubborn plugs one at a time, but it depends heavily on technique, and too much pressure can rupture the pore wall, causing inflammation, dark marks and sometimes scarring.

Vacuum extraction works differently. In HydraFacial Syndeo, the skin is first cleansed with a mild glycolic and salicylic acid blend, then the Vortex-Fusion® spiral tip uses gentle suction to loosen and lift congestion while bathing the skin in hydrating serum. Because it is suction-based rather than a squeeze, it clears congestion with less trauma, and redness is usually brief.

At SkinRev Lab

Which SkinRev Lab facials include extraction

SkinRev Lab is a non-invasive aesthetic centre at CityLink Mall, and extraction appears in two of our facials. The table sets out exactly what our menu lists, with prices before GST.

  • The HydraFacial first-timer rate is given at the counter. The JLo Beauty Booster adds S$68 to any tier.
  • SKINLDM (about 30 minutes, S$288 before GST) calms red, breakout-prone skin. It is useful when skin is too inflamed to extract, as it can be done during an active flare.

Who should skip it

When extraction is the wrong choice

  • Inflamed, painful or cystic spots. Deep spots should not be extracted; pressing pushes inflammation deeper and raises the risk of marks and scars. See a doctor first.
  • Milia. These small, hard white keratin cysts have no opening to the surface, so pressing only bruises the skin. SkinRev Lab has no non-invasive option for milia; Dr Sin Yong assesses and removes them at IN Eternity Clinic.
  • Broken, sunburnt or visibly infected skin in the area to be treated.
  • Skin on prescription acne treatment or retinoids. Tell us at booking; your doctor's advice comes first.
  • Sebaceous filaments. If the dots on your nose are uniform and refill within days, they are normal and do not need extracting.

Aftercare

After an extraction facial

Most people go straight back to work after an extraction facial. A little care in the following days protects the result.

  • Keep your hands off. Picking at treated pores undoes the work and risks marks.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and a light moisturiser, and wear sunscreen every day.
  • If your skin feels tender, hold off strong exfoliating acids and scrubs until it settles.
  • After HydraFacial Syndeo, make-up can go on the same day.
  • If a spot becomes more painful, swollen or hot over the following days, see a doctor.
  • Skip pore strips. They remove only the surface of plugs and normal sebaceous filaments, and repeated use irritates the skin.

How often

Why blackheads come back, and how often to extract

Blackheads return because oil glands keep working, especially in Singapore's heat and humidity. Extraction clears what is there today; it does not stop new plugs forming. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that blackheads and whiteheads can come back after extraction and that ongoing skin care is needed to prevent new ones.

For HydraFacial Syndeo, a session every four to six weeks is a common rhythm. Between sessions, salicylic acid, which is oil-soluble and works inside the pore, and retinoids used as advised help reduce new congestion over weeks. Our Aesthetic Specialist will suggest a realistic rhythm at your assessment, and results vary.

Choosing a provider

What a good extraction facial looks like

If you searched for the best extraction facial in Singapore, the honest answer is the one that suits your skin and is done carefully. These are the points worth checking with any provider, including us.

  • An assessment first, so that inflamed spots, milia and sebaceous filaments are not treated as blackheads.
  • Clean technique, with gloves and sterile tools for manual extraction.
  • Restraint: stubborn or inflamed spots left alone rather than forced.
  • Hydration and calming afterwards, not only extraction.
  • A clear answer on what is included and the price before GST.
  • An honest referral when a spot needs a doctor rather than a facial.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Which extraction facial is right for blackheads?

It depends on your skin. For widespread blackheads and oiliness, a vacuum-based cleansing facial such as HydraFacial Syndeo is a gentle option. For a few stubborn plugs, careful manual extraction can help. Inflamed or cystic spots should not be extracted at all.

Does facial extraction hurt?

Manual extraction can feel uncomfortable, especially on the nose and chin. Vacuum extraction is usually described as gentle. Tell your therapist if anything feels like too much.

Does HydraFacial include extraction?

Yes. Every HydraFacial Syndeo tier at SkinRev Lab includes vacuum extraction with the Vortex-Fusion® tip, within a 45-minute session.

How much is an extraction facial at SkinRev Lab?

HydraFacial Syndeo is S$288, S$388 or S$438, and the 90-minute Rejuran® PDRN Facial Professional tiers that list extraction are S$188 (Singapore) and S$208 (Oriental). All before GST; the HydraFacial first-timer rate is given at the counter.

Can extraction shrink my pores?

Not permanently. Pore size is largely genetic. Clearing trapped oil and dead skin makes pores look smaller and less dark for a while, which is why extraction is repeated as maintenance.

How often should I get blackheads extracted?

For HydraFacial Syndeo, every four to six weeks is a common rhythm. Sebaceous filaments refill within days, so extracting them more often does not help.

Can I extract blackheads at home?

It is better not to squeeze. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that popping at home can push contents deeper, increase inflammation, cause infection and leave scars. Pore strips only remove the surface of plugs.

Should I have an extraction facial if I have acne?

For mild acne that is mostly blackheads and whiteheads, a gentle cleansing facial can help. Deep, painful or cystic acne should be seen by a doctor; at our affiliated clinic, that is Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, Pacific Plaza.
