Oxygen facial what it does, what the evidence shows, and how it compares with HydraFacial
Oxygen facials promise a fresh, dewy glow with no downtime. Here is what actually happens during one, what the research says about putting oxygen on the skin, and how it differs from HydraFacial, so you can choose the facial that fits your skin.
Quick answer
- An oxygen facial sprays pressurised, oxygen-rich air onto the skin through a fine airbrush-style nozzle, usually carrying a serum such as hyaluronic acid or vitamins, sometimes under a dome or mask. It is gentle and can leave skin looking fresher and more hydrated for a day or so, mostly because of the serum, the cool airflow and the massage that come with it.
- The evidence that the oxygen itself adds much is thin. The outer 0.25 to 0.40 mm of skin is already supplied mainly by oxygen from the air, and a systematic review of topical oxygen for facial rejuvenation found the data scarce and anecdotal. Topical oxygen has moderate evidence only in a different setting: helping some diabetic foot ulcers heal.
- HydraFacial is a different treatment. It cleanses and gently peels, lifts out blackheads with vortex suction and infuses serum, in three steps over about 45 minutes. It suits congestion, blackheads, dullness and dehydration; an oxygen facial is a lighter, hydration-focused option with no extraction.
- SkinRev Lab does not offer an oxygen facial. It offers HydraFacial Syndeo at S$288 (Signature), S$388 (Deluxe) and S$438 (Platinum) before GST, with a first-timer rate on every tier: ask at the counter.
The basics
What an oxygen facial actually is
Most oxygen facials in Singapore use an oxygen concentrator connected to an airbrush-like wand. The therapist sprays a fine mist of serum carried by a stream of pressurised, oxygen-rich air across the face. Some versions add a clear dome or mask filled with oxygen, and many finish with a sheet mask, moisturiser and sunscreen.
The name is used loosely. 'Oxygen' sheet masks and bubble masks that foam on the skin are a cosmetic effect; the foam does not mean oxygen is reaching deep layers. 'Small bubble', 'aqua' and 'hydrogen-oxygen' facials offered in many salons are usually hydradermabrasion machines, which work by liquid and suction rather than by oxygen.
An oxygen facial is also not hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen means breathing pure oxygen inside a pressurised chamber, a medical treatment used for specific conditions such as some non-healing wounds.
The session
What happens during an oxygen facial
Because there is no suction, peeling or extraction, an oxygen facial is gentle and rarely causes redness. That also means it does little for blackheads or congested pores.
- Cleanse, and sometimes a light exfoliation or enzyme step.
- Serum infusion: the wand sprays serum carried by pressurised, oxygen-rich air over the face, often with light massage strokes. It feels cool and misty.
- Optional dome or mask with oxygen flowing underneath.
- Sheet or gel mask, then moisturiser and sunscreen.
- Typically 30 to 60 minutes, with no downtime; make-up can usually go on afterwards.
Evidence
What the research says about oxygen on the skin
Skin does take up oxygen directly from the air. A physiology study measuring oxygen flux through the skin found that the upper 0.25 to 0.40 mm of skin is supplied almost entirely by oxygen from the surrounding air, with the blood supply playing a minor role at that depth. In other words, healthy facial skin is not short of oxygen at the surface, and spraying more on top is unlikely to change much deeper down.
A systematic review of popular non-invasive treatments, including topical oxygen therapy, found the scientific data supporting them scarce, anecdotal and not well documented, while noting that many clients and practitioners report liking the results. A 2024 review of hyperbaric oxygen in aesthetics, a much more intensive treatment, found 17 studies, all at high risk of bias, and concluded that aesthetic use is not justified by current evidence.
Topical oxygen does have moderate evidence in one medical setting: a 2023 meta-analysis of four randomised trials found it helped some chronic diabetic foot ulcers heal. Those wounds are short of oxygen; intact facial skin is not, so the result does not carry over to facials.
The glow
Where the post-facial glow really comes from
People do leave an oxygen facial looking fresher, and there are ordinary reasons for it. The serum, often hyaluronic acid, draws water into the outer skin layer, which plumps fine dehydration lines for a while. The cool airflow and massage briefly raise blood flow, giving colour. Cleansing and a mask add to the smooth, dewy finish.
None of that is unique to oxygen, and it is temporary: usually a day or two. It is a reasonable choice before an event if you want gentle hydration with no risk of redness, as long as you see it as a refresher rather than a treatment for a skin problem.

Choosing
Which suits you
- Blackheads, congested pores or oily T-zone: HydraFacial, because it extracts; an oxygen facial does not.
- Dull, tired, dehydrated skin before an event: either can help for a few days; HydraFacial adds exfoliation and extraction, and boosters such as the JLo Beauty Booster target dullness.
- Very sensitive or reactive skin: a gentle hydrating facial, or SKINLDM at SkinRev Lab, which is designed for sensitive and redness-prone skin. Tell the therapist what your skin reacts to.
- Active, inflamed or painful acne: see a doctor first. Mild acne-prone skin may suit HydraFacial for congestion.
- Melasma, deep pigment, acne scars or sagging: neither facial treats these; they need a doctor's assessment.
Safety
Is an oxygen facial safe?
For most people, yes. It is non-invasive and the oxygen is applied to the skin, not breathed under pressure. The main issues are the serums, which can irritate or trigger allergy in sensitive skin, and hygiene of the equipment.
- Oxygen makes things burn more easily: no smoking, candles or open flames near the equipment, and avoid heavy oil-based products right before treatment.
- Ask what is in the serum, and mention any allergies or reactions to fragrance or preservatives.
- Keep your eyes closed when the airstream is near them.
- Skip it on broken, sunburnt or infected skin, cold sores, and during an eczema or rosacea flare.
- Be wary of claims that it detoxifies, kills acne bacteria or rebuilds collagen; they are not supported by evidence.

Beyond a facial
When a facial is not the answer
A facial, oxygen or otherwise, works on the surface of the skin. It cannot clear melasma or Hori's naevus, fill pitted acne scars, lift sagging skin or treat painful cystic acne. If those are your main concerns, a doctor's assessment is the useful next step.
At SkinRev Lab, the Aesthetic Specialist will tell you at your first visit if a concern belongs with a doctor. Medical treatments such as lasers and injectables are performed by Dr Sin Yong, SkinRev Lab's Medical Adviser, at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, and are priced at consultation.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
Does an oxygen facial actually work?
It can leave skin looking fresher and more hydrated for a day or two, mainly because of the serum, cooling and massage. There is little evidence that the oxygen itself adds a lasting benefit; a systematic review found the data for topical oxygen in facial rejuvenation scarce and anecdotal.
Oxygen facial vs HydraFacial: which should I choose?
Choose by your skin. For blackheads, congestion and oily or dull skin, HydraFacial suits better because it exfoliates and extracts. For a very gentle, hydration-only refresh on dry or sensitive skin, an oxygen facial is a reasonable option.
How long does an oxygen facial glow last?
Usually one to two days. The plumping comes from water drawn into the outer skin layer by the serum, which gradually evens out. A good moisturiser and daily sunscreen help keep skin comfortable and hydrated between facials.
Is an oxygen facial good for acne?
It is unlikely to help much. It does not extract blackheads or treat the causes of acne, and claims that oxygen kills acne bacteria in a facial are unproven. Mild congestion may suit HydraFacial; inflamed or painful acne needs a doctor.
Is an oxygen facial safe for sensitive skin?
Usually, since there is no suction or peeling. The serum is the main risk, so ask what is in it and mention allergies. For reactive, redness-prone skin, SKINLDM at SkinRev Lab is designed for sensitive skin.
Can I have an oxygen facial or HydraFacial before an event?
Yes. Both have no downtime. For HydraFacial, booking two to five days before is common, so any brief flushing has settled. Avoid trying any new facial for the first time on the day of the event.
Is an oxygen facial the same as hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
No. An oxygen facial sprays oxygen-rich air and serum onto the skin. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy means breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, a medical treatment, and a 2024 review found no good evidence for its aesthetic use.
Does SkinRev Lab offer an oxygen facial, and how much is HydraFacial?
SkinRev Lab does not offer an oxygen facial. HydraFacial Syndeo is S$288 (Signature), S$388 (Deluxe) or S$438 (Platinum) before GST, with a first-timer rate on every tier; ask at the counter or on WhatsApp.
