Korean skin boosters the types, the evidence, and needle-free vs injectable
Korean skin boosters are behind much of the glass-skin trend, but the name covers very different products. Here is what each type does, how needle-free and injected boosters differ, and what to ask before you book in Singapore.
Quick answer
- A Korean skin booster is not one product. The phrase usually means a skin-quality treatment in the Korean style, using hyaluronic acid (HA), polynucleotide (PN), PDRN or PDLLA, placed in the skin as tiny injections or applied without needles, to improve hydration, texture and fine lines rather than change face shape.
- The types work differently. HA holds water, PN and PDRN are purified salmon DNA fragments thought to support repair, and PDLLA is a biostimulator that prompts gradual collagen. Systematic reviews describe the evidence for injected HA and PN as promising but based on small studies, and call for larger trials.
- Injected boosters are a medical procedure in Singapore and should only be given by a doctor. Needle-free boosters do not puncture the skin and do not reach injection depth, so they are gentler, with hydration noticed first and other changes building across a course.
- At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, the Needleless SkinBooster is S$288 per region before GST, and the needle-free Rejuran PDRN Facial, using a Korean c-PDRN range, is S$128 to S$348 before GST. Injectable HA, PN and PDLLA boosters are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation.
The term
What people mean by a Korean skin booster
The term skin booster began as the name of a commercial hyaluronic acid product, and has since become a catch-all for injectables that improve skin quality rather than add volume. South Korea took the idea furthest: many of the polynucleotide and poly-D,L-lactic acid (PDLLA) products now used in Asia are made there, and a Korean survey of 235 board-certified dermatologists found 88% of them used polynucleotide injections.
So when people in Singapore search for a Korean skin booster, they usually want the result associated with K-beauty: skin that looks clear, evenly hydrated and luminous, sometimes called glass skin. That is a skin-quality goal. It is reached by different products and routes, and the word Korean on its own tells you little about what is actually in the syringe or the serum.
Before booking, ask three things: which type of booster it is, whether it is injected or needle-free, and who performs it. The answers matter far more than the country of origin.
The types
HA, PN, PDRN and PDLLA boosters compared
Most Korean-style boosters fall into four families. Some products combine two, for example PDLLA mixed with HA, so check the label or ask the doctor.
| Type | What it is | Mainly used for | How it is given |
|---|---|---|---|
| HA booster | Soft hyaluronic acid that attracts and holds water in the dermis | Dehydration, fine lines, dull skin | Injected as microdroplets by a doctor |
| PN (polynucleotide) booster | Longer-chain purified salmon DNA fragments, thought to form a scaffold that supports repair | Thin or sensitive skin, fine lines, crepey under-eyes | Injected into the dermis by a doctor |
| PDRN | Shorter-chain salmon DNA fragments, used in injectables and, in cosmetic grade (c-PDRN), in facials and skincare | Calmer, better-hydrated skin; recovery after procedures | Injected by a doctor, or applied needle-free in a facial |
| PDLLA booster | Tiny poly-D,L-lactic acid particles that prompt a gradual collagen response | Gradual firmness and texture, acne-scar plans | Injected by a doctor; change builds over weeks to months |
| Needle-free booster | Booster solution delivered through the skin barrier without puncturing it | Hydration, tone and overall skin condition | Applicator or facial device, by a trained therapist |
Route
Needle-free vs injectable: why depth matters
The skin's outer layer is built to keep things out. A widely cited review argued that compounds above about 500 daltons pass through intact skin poorly, and hyaluronic acid and DNA fragments are far larger than that. This is why a serum rubbed in by hand mostly stays on the surface.
An injectable booster gets round the barrier by going under it: a doctor places microdroplets about 1 to 2 mm deep with a fine needle, an injector device or a cannula. A needle-free booster drives solution past the barrier without breaking the skin, so bleeding and scabbing are not expected, but it does not reach the depth of an injection.
Some devices sold as needle-free are jet injectors, which push product into the dermis under pressure. That is still an injection, just without a needle, and belongs with a doctor. Ask which kind you are being offered.
Evidence
What the research shows, and its limits
For injected HA, a 2023 systematic review of 13 studies found improvements in hydration, firmness, texture, radiance and elasticity, with high satisfaction and few problems, but concluded that large randomised trials are still needed. For injected polynucleotides, a 2025 systematic review found nine studies of low to moderate quality covering 219 patients; results for wrinkles, texture and elasticity were promising and side effects mostly mild.
A 2024 review by Korean doctors describes PDLLA as a biostimulator whose effect builds gradually, and notes that even small particles can rarely block a blood vessel, which is why injection technique and anatomy knowledge matter. One study it cites found hydration from an HA booster lasted up to nine months after the last injection, though how long results last varies by product and person.
For needle-free delivery, we found no published studies on the specific applicator used at SkinRev Lab, and evidence for injections does not transfer to it. So we describe needle-free boosters as gentler, course-based treatments, not as an injection without the needle. Individual results vary.

Injectable
Injectable HA, PN and PDLLA boosters at IN Eternity Clinic
Injectable skin boosters are performed by Dr Sin Yong (MBBS Singapore, MRCS Edinburgh, MSc Practical Dermatology Cardiff), SkinRev Lab's Medical Adviser, at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT. He assesses the skin first and may suggest HA, PN, PDLLA, a combination, or something other than a booster if that suits the goal better.
Numbing cream is usually applied for 20 to 30 minutes. Afterwards the skin shows a grid of small bumps and some redness, which usually settle within hours to a day or two; bruising is possible, especially around the eyes. Boosters are usually planned as a course a few weeks apart. Because the product, areas and number of sessions vary, the clinic prices it at consultation: WhatsApp +65 8815 3008.
Choosing
Which route suits your skin
- Dull, dehydrated skin from air-conditioning, and no wish for needles: a needle-free booster across a course.
- Reactive or post-acne skin that wants calming with a full facial: the needle-free Rejuran PDRN Facial.
- Crepey under-eyes, neck or hands, or fine lines that needle-free care has not shifted: an injectable HA or PN booster with a doctor.
- Gradual firmness or part of an acne-scar plan: ask the doctor about PDLLA, accepting slower change.
- Sagging, hollows, deep lines or pigment: boosters do not lift, fill or remove spots; a doctor can discuss lifting, filler or laser.
- Unsure: start with an assessment. If a goal is better served by a doctor, SkinRev Lab can pass your enquiry to IN Eternity Clinic.
Safety
Safety and the questions to ask in Singapore
Singapore's Ministry of Health has said that dermal fillers and botulinum toxin should only be administered by qualified medical practitioners, and the Health Sciences Authority warns against do-it-yourself injectable kits, which can cause severe infection, tissue death, blindness and stroke. Korean booster products bought online for self-injection fall into that category. The Korean review above also advises using only products approved for injection in humans.
Common effects after injection are short-lived redness, swelling, small bumps and occasional bruising; pigment changes are rare but worth discussing if your skin marks easily. PN and PDRN are derived from fish DNA, so mention any fish allergy. Boosters are not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or over active infection, cold sores or inflamed acne.
- Is this an injection, a jet injector, or a needle-free treatment?
- Which product family is it: HA, PN, PDRN or PDLLA?
- Who performs it, and are they a doctor?
- How many sessions, how far apart, and what does the whole course cost, with GST stated?
- What happens if I bruise, get a lump or have a reaction?
Aftercare
Courses, aftercare and Singapore's climate
Most boosters are given as a short course, then maintenance. A needle-free booster can sit between injected sessions or other treatments, but tell each team what you have had, as facials are usually avoided for a day or two after injections.
Hydration is what boosters protect, and Singapore's heat, humidity and long hours in air-conditioning work against it. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, and avoid saunas, hot yoga and hard workouts for a day or two after an injection. Compare photographs taken weeks apart rather than the mirror the next morning.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
What is a Korean skin booster?
It is a skin-quality treatment in the Korean style, using hyaluronic acid, polynucleotide (PN), PDRN or PDLLA, either injected as tiny droplets by a doctor or delivered needle-free. The aim is better hydration, texture and fine lines, not a change in face shape.
Is Rejuran a skin booster?
Rejuran is a Korean brand, not an ingredient. Its injectable polynucleotide product is a skin booster given by a doctor, while its cosmetic range, with c-PDRN, is used in needle-free facials such as the Rejuran PDRN Facial at SkinRev Lab. The two are different treatments.
Needle-free or injectable skin booster: which is better?
They do different jobs. Injections place product directly in the dermis and do more, with a day or two of bumps and possible bruising. Needle-free boosters are gentler, with no puncture, and suit hydration, maintenance and people who avoid needles. Neither lifts or fills.
How long does a skin booster last?
It varies by product and person. Hydration from a needle-free booster fades over weeks and needs maintenance. For injected HA, one study found hydration lasted up to nine months after the last injection, and PDLLA builds gradually over months. Most plans use a course, then maintenance.
How many skin booster sessions do I need?
Injected boosters are usually planned as a short course a few weeks apart, and a survey of Korean dermatologists found three polynucleotide sessions four weeks apart was most common. Needle-free boosters are usually spaced every two to four weeks. The plan is set after assessment.
Are Korean skin boosters safe?
Injected by a doctor with an approved product, side effects are usually short-lived redness, bumps and bruising, with rare serious risks such as a blocked blood vessel. Do not use do-it-yourself injectable kits, which HSA warns can cause infection, blindness and stroke.
How much is a skin booster in Singapore?
At SkinRev Lab, the Needleless SkinBooster is S$288 per region and the Rejuran PDRN Facial S$128 to S$348, before GST. Injectable boosters at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation, because the product, areas and number of sessions vary.
Can I have a skin booster before an event?
A needle-free booster usually leaves only brief flushing, so it can fit close to an event. Injected boosters leave small bumps for hours to a day or two and can bruise, so plan them at least a week or two ahead.
