HydraFacial with extraction: what extraction does and does not do

Extraction is the step most people book a HydraFacial for. Here is what suction extraction actually clears from your pores, what it leaves alone and why, how it compares with manual extraction, and how to look after your skin afterwards.

Quick answer

  • Every HydraFacial includes extraction. After a mild acid step loosens the plugs, a vortex suction tip lifts out blackheads and surface congestion while the skin is flushed with serum, without squeezing.
  • It suits blackheads, oily congestion and some softer closed comedones. Pores look emptier and cleaner afterwards, but they refill over days to weeks, so regular sessions keep them clear.
  • It does not remove cysts, inflamed or painful spots, or milia, and it does not permanently shrink pores. Inflamed spots are worked around, because pressing can push inflammation deeper.
  • At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall (City Hall MRT), HydraFacial Syndeo takes about 45 minutes and is performed by trained Aesthetic Therapists.

How it works

How extraction works in a HydraFacial

Extraction is step two of the three HydraFacial steps. First, a mild glycolic and salicylic acid blend softens the plug of oil and dead skin in each pore. Then a Vortex-Fusion tip with gentle suction passes over the skin, lifting loosened debris out while a hydrating serum flushes the surface. The third step infuses serums into the freshly cleared skin.

Because nothing is squeezed, there is usually less redness than with manual extraction, and most people go straight back to work. You feel a wet, pulling sensation, strongest over the nose and chin, where congestion tends to sit.

Every tier, from Signature to Platinum, includes this extraction step. The higher tiers add boosters and further steps, not stronger suction.

What it clears

What suction extraction can clear

Blackheads, or open comedones, respond well: the plug is already open to the surface, and once softened it lifts out with suction. Oily congestion across the nose, chin and forehead also clears, and pores look emptier and cleaner.

Closed comedones, the small skin-coloured bumps sometimes called whiteheads, are more variable. Softer ones may clear; firmer ones under a closed surface may not shift in one session. Your therapist will tell you what to expect for your skin.

Sebaceous filaments, the grey dots on the nose that many people mistake for blackheads, are a normal part of the pore. Extraction empties them for a while, and they refill within days to weeks. That is normal, and it is why regular sessions are part of the plan.

The research is small. In an open-label study of 20 adults with mild to moderate acne, six HydraFacial clarifying treatments with blue LED over 12 weeks were followed by clearer skin; there was no control group, and one author worked for the manufacturer.

Limits

What extraction does not do

If you are taking isotretinoin, or stopped recently, exfoliating facials are usually postponed, because the skin stays fragile for months.

  • It does not extract inflamed, red or painful spots. These are worked around, because pressing on them can push their contents deeper and increase inflammation.
  • It does not treat cysts or nodules. Deep, painful acne needs a doctor's assessment and treatment.
  • It does not remove milia. These small, hard white bumps sit under a thin layer of skin and need a different approach, usually from a doctor.
  • It does not permanently shrink pores. Pore size is largely set by genetics and oil output; emptied pores simply look smaller for a while.
  • It does not fade post-acne marks or scars. Those need other treatments.

Suction or squeezing

HydraFacial extraction vs manual extraction

Manual extraction uses pressure on each plug, with fingers wrapped in tissue or a sterile tool. Done well, by trained hands, it can clear stubborn comedones; the American Academy of Dermatology describes extraction by a dermatologist with sterile instruments as a safe way to remove blackheads and whiteheads. Done badly, or at home, it risks infection, pushing debris deeper and scarring.

Suction extraction is gentler and more even across the face, with less redness, but it is less targeted on a single firm plug. Many people find that regular HydraFacials keep congestion under control without manual squeezing at all.

If you have a lot of firm closed comedones, ask at your skin check. Your therapist may suggest a short series of HydraFacials, a home routine with a suitable active, or a doctor's review.

Afterwards

Aftercare after extraction

Redness lasting more than a day, swelling or several new inflamed spots is not usual. Message us on WhatsApp at +65 8266 9585, and see a doctor if it is getting worse.

  • Do not pick or squeeze anything that surfaces in the following days. A small spot or two can appear as congestion clears; leave it alone.
  • Keep the routine gentle for a day or two: no scrubs, peels, acid toners or retinoids.
  • Skip saunas, steam rooms and very hot workouts on the day.
  • Wear sunscreen daily.
  • Book again in four to six weeks if congestion is your main concern.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Does HydraFacial include extraction?

Yes. Extraction by suction is step two of every HydraFacial tier, after a mild acid step softens the plugs.

Does HydraFacial extraction hurt?

It is designed to be gentle. You feel a wet, pulling sensation, strongest over the nose and chin. Tell your therapist if anything is uncomfortable; the suction can be adjusted.

Will HydraFacial remove all my blackheads?

It clears most surface blackheads in a session, though very firm or deep ones may need more than one visit. Pores refill with oil over days to weeks, so regular sessions keep them clear.

Can HydraFacial remove whiteheads?

Softer closed comedones may clear; firmer ones under a closed surface may not shift in one session. Your therapist will tell you what to expect at your skin check.

Why didn't my therapist extract my pimple?

Inflamed, red or painful spots are worked around on purpose. Pressing them can push their contents deeper, increase inflammation and raise the risk of a scar or dark mark.

How often should I have a HydraFacial for blackheads?

Every four to six weeks is a common rhythm. Going more often than every two weeks adds no benefit.

Can HydraFacial remove milia?

No. Milia sit under a thin layer of skin and need a different method, usually performed by a doctor.
