Boyzilian wax in Singapore what to expect at your first male Brazilian wax

A first Boyzilian is less daunting when you know what happens on the bed. Here is what is removed, how to prepare, how much it stings and what actually helps, what a hygienic room looks like, how to look after the skin in Singapore's heat, and when laser hair removal makes more sense.

Quick answer

  • A Boyzilian is a male Brazilian wax: warm wax removes the hair from the pubic area and the genitals, and the skin stays smooth for roughly three to six weeks. For a first one, let the hair grow to about 5 mm, two to three weeks after shaving, and expect the first session to be the most uncomfortable.
  • SkinRev Lab at CityLink Mall charges S$118 for a Boyzilian, GST included, and S$68 for new clients on their first visit; adding the strip between the buttocks costs S$28, the Small band rate. You are waxed in a closed private room by a single Aesthetic Specialist.
  • Expect brief redness and a few small bumps around the follicles. Skip the gym, sauna, pool and hot showers for 24 hours, wear loose cotton underwear, and exfoliate gently from day three to keep ingrown hairs down; see a doctor for painful, spreading or pus-filled bumps, a fever, or any sore or lump you are unsure about.
  • Most men come back every four to six weeks. For men who would rather have less hair over time, or who keep fighting ingrown hairs, laser is usually the more sensible long-term plan: Dr Sin Yong performs it at IN Eternity Clinic on the Lutronic Clarity II, priced at consultation.

What is removed

What a Boyzilian wax covers, and the tidier options

Think of a Boyzilian as a Brazilian wax adapted for men. It clears the hair from the intimate area: the pubic hair above the penis, the shaft and the scrotum. Hair between the buttocks is a separate perianal strip, added if you want the area fully bare. In a large US survey of 4,198 men, about half groomed their pubic hair regularly, and among men who removed it, most did so above the penis (87%), then on the scrotum (66%) and the shaft (57%).

If you want the area neater rather than bare, a bikini line or an extended bikini may be all you need. At SkinRev Lab every area sits in one of four price bands, GST included, and men's rates are S$10 above the women's bands, or S$20 above on Extra Large, reflecting coarser hair and more time on the bed. New clients get the first-visit rate once, for one area, at their first appointment.

Before you go

Preparing for your first male Brazilian wax

Most of what makes a first wax go well happens before you arrive. Unsure whether your hair is long enough? Come anyway; the team will check it and say plainly whether today works or another date is better.

  • Length: aim for about 5 mm, which most men reach two to three weeks after shaving. Wax cannot hold stubble, and very long hair is normally trimmed down before waxing.
  • A light exfoliation a day or two ahead helps; on the day itself, leave the area free of moisturiser, oil and talc.
  • Shower beforehand, and wear loose underwear and trousers to go home in.
  • If you are sensitive, keep coffee to a minimum before the appointment.
  • Do not wax over sunburn, broken skin, a rash or an inflamed bump; the appointment is rescheduled instead.
  • Mention oral isotretinoin, retinoid creams on the area, or a recent laser or peel there when you book. Waxing is usually deferred until six months after a course of oral isotretinoin ends, and topical retinoids are stopped on the area roughly a week ahead; your doctor can confirm what applies to you.
  • Any sore, blister, wart or lump on the genitals that has not been checked should be seen by a doctor before waxing, not after.

Pain and numbing

Pain and numbing: the honest version

It stings, and the first session stings most, because every hair is at full strength and genital skin is thin and sensitive. Scrotal skin is also loose, so a careful specialist works in small sections and holds the skin taut for each pull; taut skin hurts less and is less likely to bruise or lift. Each pull is a sharp second, and most men find it noticeably easier by the third visit as regrowth comes back finer.

Numbing creams are not a simple fix. The US Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers not to use over-the-counter numbing products with more than 4% lidocaine, not to apply them heavily over large areas or on irritated or broken skin, and not to wrap treated skin, because too much can be absorbed and cause an irregular heartbeat, seizures or breathing problems. Use one only if a pharmacist or doctor has said it is safe for you, follow the label exactly, and tell the specialist, since any residue has to be cleaned off before waxing.

  • Breathe out slowly as each piece of wax comes off, and keep your legs and stomach relaxed.
  • Ask for a short pause whenever you need one.
  • Keep to a regular rhythm; leaving it too long makes the next session feel like the first.

Hygiene and privacy

Hygiene and privacy: what to expect in the room

For a few hours after waxing, the emptied follicles are open to whatever touches them, which is why hygiene matters. These are fair standards to expect anywhere in Singapore; if a place falls short, you can walk out.

At SkinRev Lab you are in a closed treatment room with one Aesthetic Specialist throughout: no one passes through, and there is no package selling while you are lying down. It is a professional skin service, so say so whenever you want to pause or stop.

  • A room to yourself, with a clean disposable sheet on the couch.
  • Gloved hands and a fresh spatula each time wax is taken from the pot, so nothing that has touched skin is dipped back in.
  • Cleansing of the area first, and an unscented soothing product once the wax is off.
  • A short health check on medicines, skin problems and recent treatments before the first strip.
  • A refusal to wax over cuts, a rash or an angry bump, with a new date offered instead.

Wax or razor

Why some men swap the razor for wax

Most grooming injuries come from blades. A study of US emergency department records estimated about 11,700 visits for genital grooming injuries between 2002 and 2010, rising fivefold over the period; razors were involved in 83%, and almost all were minor injuries treated and sent home.

In a national survey of 7,570 US adults, about a quarter of people who groomed had been injured at some point, mostly by cuts, then burns and rashes. Among injured men, the scrotum was the commonest site (67%), and men who had removed all their pubic hair 11 or more times had about twice the odds of injury. The same survey found that, in women, waxing lowered the odds of frequent injuries compared with ordinary razors.

The practical lessons: going fully bare often means more chances for nicks, burns and ingrown hairs whatever the method, wax that is too hot can burn, and good technique on loose skin matters more than the product. If you only want it neater, a trim or a bikini line may suit you better than a full Boyzilian.

Aftercare

Aftercare in Singapore's heat

Heat, sweat and friction are what irritate freshly waxed skin, and a Singapore afternoon supplies all three. Gentle care for the first day and sensible habits for the first week let most redness and small bumps settle on their own.

  • Give the area 24 hours away from workouts, hot showers, sauna, steam rooms, pools and the sea; if you train most days, schedule the wax on a rest day.
  • Choose loose cotton underwear and airy trousers, and leave cycling shorts and compression gear for another day.
  • Keep the skin clean and dry: blot rather than rub after showering, and get out of damp, sweaty clothes quickly.
  • Avoid fragranced soaps, body sprays and aftershave on the area.
  • Start light exfoliation on day three and repeat it a few times a week; no other habit does more to stop hairs growing back in.
  • Resist shaving between appointments, or the hair will be too short for the next wax and out of step.

Ingrown hairs and folliculitis

Ingrown hairs, folliculitis and when to see a doctor

Ingrown hairs are the common nuisance after any pubic hair removal: as a hair regrows, its tip curls back into the skin and leaves an itchy or tender bump. Bumps after waxing are not always infection. In a study of 28 women with follicular bumps after waxing their limbs, a third of the biopsies showed a reaction to trapped hair shaft or keratin that resembled ingrown-hair bumps.

An everyday ingrown hair usually needs only patience: a warm, damp cloth held on it for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day, no squeezing, no hair removal on that spot, and loose clothes. Most clear within one to two weeks. Ease a hair out with clean tweezers only if you can see a loop sitting on the surface; never dig for one.

Folliculitis that spreads or hurts is a medical problem. Book a GP or dermatologist if a bump turns hot, swollen, very sore or pus-filled, if the redness widens, if you run a fever or feel unwell, if a lump keeps enlarging, or if bumps return after every wax. Have any bump on or near the genitals that you are unsure about checked as well, because ingrown hairs can look like other conditions, such as genital herpes. SkinRev Lab does not diagnose or treat these, and will not wax over inflamed skin.

How often

How often to wax, and what changes over time

Most men return every four to six weeks. Because each hair comes out with its root, regrowth takes longer and feels softer than stubble after a razor; the follicle is untouched, though, so the hair does come back. Consistency counts for more than hitting an exact week: hair grows in cycles, and regular waxing tends to leave sparser regrowth.

Areas take about 15 to 45 minutes at SkinRev Lab, depending on size. Long gaps make the next wax feel like a first one again, and shaving in between leaves hair that is too short and out of step.

Wax or laser

Boyzilian wax or laser hair removal?

Laser works on the follicle rather than the hair. The hair's pigment soaks up the laser light and turns it into heat, which damages the follicle; over a series of sessions, fewer and finer hairs grow back. A Cochrane review found about a 50% short-term reduction with alexandrite and diode lasers up to six months after treatment, but no documented long-term removal, so the honest promise is long-term reduction, not bare skin forever. In darker skin types (III to VI), a meta-analysis linked long-pulsed Nd:YAG with less post-inflammatory darkening than intense pulsed light.

In our network, Dr Sin Yong performs laser hair removal at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT. The clinic's Lutronic Clarity II carries two wavelengths, 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG, and the doctor picks between them for your skin tone; the clinic prices it at consultation. Because laser needs pigment to aim at, white, grey, very fair or red hair responds poorly, and waxing remains the practical choice there. Planning to move to laser? Allow about four weeks without waxing or plucking before the first session, and shave in the meantime.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

What is a Boyzilian?

A Boyzilian is a male Brazilian wax: hair is removed from the pubic area and the genitals, with an optional perianal strip between the buttocks. Warm wax is used in a private room, and the result usually lasts about three to six weeks.

How much is a Boyzilian in Singapore?

SkinRev Lab at CityLink Mall charges S$118 for a Boyzilian, including GST, or S$68 for a new client's first visit (one area, once). The perianal strip is an extra S$28. If you only want it tidier, the men's bikini line is S$48 and the extended bikini S$68.

Does a male Brazilian wax hurt?

Yes, especially the first time, because every hair is at full strength and genital skin is sensitive. Each pull lasts a second, the specialist keeps the skin taut, and most men find it noticeably easier by the third visit.

What hair length do I need for a Boyzilian?

Around 5 mm, which takes most men two to three weeks after a shave. Wax slides over shorter stubble, leaving patches and needing extra passes over the same skin; very long hair is trimmed first.

Can I use numbing cream before a Boyzilian?

Only if a pharmacist or doctor says it is safe for you. The US FDA warns against over-the-counter numbing products above 4% lidocaine, heavy use over large areas, use on irritated or broken skin, and wrapping treated skin. Tell the specialist, as any residue must be removed before waxing.

How long does a Boyzilian last?

Regrowth usually becomes noticeable after three to six weeks, so most men return every four to six weeks. Skip the razor in between, or there will be too little hair for the next wax.

How do I stop ingrown hairs after a Boyzilian?

Give it 24 hours without exercise, heat or pools, choose loose cotton underwear, keep the skin clean and dry, and begin gentle exfoliation on day three. Leave bumps alone. Painful, spreading, pus-filled or recurring bumps need a doctor, and repeated trouble is a good reason to consider laser.

Is waxing safer than shaving the groin?

Razors cause most grooming injuries, mostly small cuts, and waxing avoids blades, but wax can burn if too hot and can still leave bumps and ingrown hairs. Frequent total removal by any method raises the chance of injury, so a trim or a bikini line is an option if you do not need the area bare.

Should I wax or laser for a Boyzilian?

Wax suits you if you want smooth skin now, your hair is grey or light, or you are not ready to commit to a course. Laser suits you if the goal is gradually less hair or fewer ingrown hairs; Dr Sin Yong performs it at IN Eternity Clinic on the Lutronic Clarity II, priced at consultation. SkinRev Lab does not do laser.
