Guide · First Brazilian wax

Brazilian wax in Singapore a first-timer's guide, from hair length to aftercare

A first Brazilian wax is mostly about preparation: the right hair length, the right week, a clean room and sensible aftercare in Singapore's heat. Here is what to expect, what it costs at SkinRev Lab, and when laser makes more sense.

Quick answer

  • A Brazilian wax in Singapore removes most or all of the pubic hair, front to back, and keeps the area smooth for roughly three to six weeks. For a first wax, let the hair grow to about 5 mm (two to three weeks), book outside the days just before and during your period if you can, and expect the first session to sting the most.
  • Hard wax sets on the skin and is peeled off without a cloth strip, so it grips the hair more than the skin and is often preferred for intimate areas. Strip (soft) wax is spread thinly and pulled off with a strip, which is quick on larger areas. Either way, the wax should be warm, not hot, and never applied over broken skin.
  • At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, a Brazilian is S$98 for women and a Boyzilian (male Brazilian) is S$118, GST included, with a first-visit rate of S$68 for one Extra Large area. A perianal strip can be added at the Small band rate. Every wax is done in a private room by one Aesthetic Specialist.
  • If you want less hair over time rather than smooth skin for a few weeks, or keep getting ingrown hairs, laser hair removal is usually the better long-term route. It is a medical treatment performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation; SkinRev Lab does not perform laser.

The styles

Brazilian wax in Singapore: what is actually removed

Waxing names are used loosely, so it helps to agree the shape before you lie down. A bikini line removes the hair that would show outside standard underwear. An extended bikini goes further in at the sides and top. A Brazilian removes most or all of the hair, front to back, sometimes leaving a small strip or shape at the front if you ask for one.

Some people add a perianal strip (the hair between the buttocks) so the result is fully bare. If you are unsure how far to go on a first visit, a bikini line or extended bikini is a gentler way to see how your skin reacts before committing to a full Brazilian.

At SkinRev Lab every waxing area sits in one of four price bands, and waxing prices include GST, so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay. The first-visit rate applies once per new client, to one area, on the first session.

Men

Male Brazilian wax (Boyzilian) in Singapore

A Boyzilian is the men's version of a Brazilian, covering the intimate area. Male hair there is usually coarser and the skin of the scrotum is thin and loose, so a careful therapist works in small sections and holds the skin taut with each pull. Expect it to take a little longer than a women's Brazilian.

At SkinRev Lab a Boyzilian is S$118, GST included, or S$68 as a first-visit rate for new clients, with a perianal strip available at the Small band rate (S$28 for men). If you only want the area tidier rather than bare, a bikini line (S$48) or extended bikini (S$68) may be enough.

In a large US survey of adults who groomed their pubic hair, men who removed all of it eleven or more times in their lives had higher odds of injury than those who did not remove it all. Going fully bare more often means more chances for nicks, burns and ingrown hairs, which is worth weighing if you plan to keep it up for years.

Hard vs strip wax

Hard wax or strip wax for a Brazilian?

Hard wax (also called stripless or film wax) is applied warm in a thicker layer, left to set, then flicked off by its own edge. Because it shrinks around the hair as it cools, it grips the hair more than the surrounding skin, which is why many therapists prefer it for the bikini area, underarms and face.

Strip wax (soft wax) is spread thinly and removed with a cloth or paper strip pressed on top. It is fast on large, flat areas such as legs and arms, but it adheres to the skin as well as the hair, so it can feel harsher on thin, sensitive skin and should not go over the same patch repeatedly.

What matters more than the wax is the temperature and the technique. Wax that is too hot can burn, and in a US national survey burns were the second most common pubic grooming injury after cuts. The same survey found that women who waxed had lower odds of frequent injuries than women who used ordinary razors. SkinRev Lab uses warm-wax epilation; if you have a preference, ask which wax will be used on the intimate area when you book.

Before you go

Preparing for your first Brazilian

  • Let the hair grow to about 5 mm, roughly two to three weeks after your last shave. Shorter, and the wax cannot grip; much longer, and it can be trimmed first.
  • Exfoliate gently a day or two before, then skip moisturiser, oil and body powder on the area on the day.
  • Shower before your appointment and wear loose, breathable underwear and clothing to go home in.
  • Go easy on caffeine and alcohol beforehand if you are sensitive; both can make the skin feel more reactive.
  • Do not wax over sunburn, broken skin, an active rash, cold sores or an inflamed bump.
  • Tell the therapist first if you take oral isotretinoin or use retinoids on the area, are pregnant, or have had recent laser or peels there. The usual guidance is to wait six months after finishing oral isotretinoin and to stop topical retinoids on the area about a week before; check with your doctor.
  • If you are not sure your hair is long enough, go anyway; at SkinRev Lab the team will tell you honestly whether to wax today or rebook.

Timing

Brazilian wax and your period

Many people find their skin more sensitive in the days just before and during a period, so a first Brazilian is usually more comfortable if you book in the week or so after your period ends. Hormonal sensitivity varies, so track how your own skin feels over a couple of visits.

Waxing on your period is possible at many places if you use a tampon or menstrual cup, but some prefer to reschedule; ask when you book rather than on the day. If your period starts unexpectedly before a SkinRev Lab appointment, WhatsApp the team on +65 8266 9585 and decide together whether to go ahead or move the slot.

Plan around events as well. Give yourself at least two or three days between a wax and a beach holiday, a pool party or a long flight, so any redness and small bumps have settled and you can still exercise and swim.

Pain

Does a Brazilian wax hurt the first time?

Yes, honestly, it does, and the first session is usually the most uncomfortable. The skin in the intimate area is thinner and more sensitive than on the legs, and on a first wax every hair is at full strength. Each pull is a sharp second; for many people the anticipation is worse than the wax.

It tends to get easier by the second or third visit, because regrowth after waxing comes back finer and some hairs fall into the same growth cycle. Staying on a regular rhythm helps this happen.

  • Book outside the days just before and during your period if you can.
  • Breathe out slowly as each strip or piece of wax comes off, and keep your muscles relaxed.
  • Let the therapist hold the skin taut; taut skin hurts less and bruises less.
  • Ask for a pause whenever you need one. A good therapist will not rush you.
  • Avoid numbing creams over large intimate areas unless a pharmacist or doctor has said they are safe for you.

Hygiene

Hygiene: what a clean Brazilian wax looks like

Intimate waxing removes hair from the follicle and leaves tiny openings in the skin for a few hours, so hygiene matters. Wherever you go in Singapore, it is reasonable to expect the following, and to leave if you do not see it.

At SkinRev Lab every wax is done in a closed room by one Aesthetic Specialist; nobody walks through, and nobody sells you a package while you are on the bed.

  • A private room, a fresh disposable cover on the bed and disposable underwear if you want it.
  • Gloves, and a clean spatula for every dip into the wax pot, so wax that has touched skin never goes back in.
  • Skin cleansed before waxing and a soothing, fragrance-free product afterwards.
  • Questions about medicines, pregnancy, skin conditions and recent treatments before anything starts.
  • A therapist who refuses to wax over broken skin, an infected bump or a rash, and reschedules instead.

Aftercare

Aftercare in Singapore's heat and humidity

Sweat, friction and tight clothing are what irritate freshly waxed skin, and Singapore supplies all three. Treat the first 24 hours gently and the first week sensibly, and most redness and small bumps around the follicles settle on their own.

Watch the area over the following weeks. If small bumps keep appearing as hair grows back, that is usually ingrown hair, and the next section explains what to do.

  • For 24 hours: skip hot showers, sauna, steam, swimming pools, the sea and the gym. Book your wax on a rest day if you train.
  • Wear loose cotton underwear and breathable clothing; avoid tight jeans, leggings and shapewear for a day.
  • Keep the area clean and dry. Pat dry after showering, and change out of sweaty clothes promptly.
  • Give sex a day, and avoid scented soaps, deodorant, perfumed lotions and self-tan on the area.
  • From day three, start exfoliating gently a few times a week; it is the single most useful habit against ingrown hairs.
  • Do not shave between waxes, so the hair is long enough next time and grows back on one cycle.

Ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs and bumps after a Brazilian

Ingrown hairs are common with any pubic hair removal. In a survey of 333 women at two US public clinics, 60% reported at least one complication from removing pubic hair by any method, most often skin abrasion and ingrown hairs. In a separate study of 28 women who developed bumps after waxing, about a third of biopsies showed a foreign-body reaction to hair shaft or keratin, resembling the bumps of ingrown hairs.

Most ingrown hairs settle within one to two weeks. Hold a warm, wet cloth on the bump, leave it alone, pause hair removal on that patch, and wear loose clothing. Lift a hair only if a loop is clearly at the surface; never dig for it.

See a doctor if a bump becomes very painful, hot, swollen or full of pus, if you feel feverish or unwell, if a lump keeps growing, or if you are unsure whether a bump on or near the genitals is an ingrown hair at all. If ingrown hairs keep returning despite good habits, consider laser rather than more waxing.

Wax or laser

How often to wax, and when laser makes more sense

Most people rebook a Brazilian every four to six weeks. Waxing removes hair from the root, so regrowth is slower and finer than after shaving, but the follicle is unchanged and the hair always comes back. Keeping a steady rhythm matters more than the exact interval.

Laser works differently: light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and turns into heat that damages the follicle, so fewer, finer hairs return over a course of sessions. A Cochrane review found short-term hair reduction with alexandrite and diode lasers but no documented long-term removal, so the honest description is long-term reduction. For skin of colour, a meta-analysis found long-pulsed Nd:YAG caused less post-inflammatory darkening than intense pulsed light.

At IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, laser hair removal is performed by Dr Sin Yong on the Lutronic Clarity II, with 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths chosen for your skin tone, and priced at consultation by the clinic. Laser works poorly on white, grey, very blonde or red hair, where waxing remains the practical option. If you switch, stop waxing and plucking about four weeks before your first laser session and shave instead.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

How much is a Brazilian wax in Singapore?

At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, a Brazilian is S$98 for women and a Boyzilian is S$118 for men, GST included. New clients get a first-visit rate of S$68 on one Extra Large area, once, on the first session. A perianal strip can be added at the Small band rate (S$18 for women, S$28 for men).

Does a Brazilian wax hurt the first time?

Yes, and the first session is usually the most uncomfortable because every hair is at full strength and the skin is sensitive. Each pull is a sharp second. It tends to get easier by the second or third visit as regrowth comes back finer, especially if you keep a regular rhythm.

How long should my hair be for a Brazilian wax?

About 5 mm, which is roughly two to three weeks of growth after shaving. Shorter than that and the wax cannot grip, which means patchy results and more passes over the same skin. Longer hair can be trimmed first.

Can I get a Brazilian wax on my period?

Many places will wax with a tampon or menstrual cup in place, but skin is often more sensitive just before and during a period, so a first wax is usually more comfortable a week or so afterwards. Ask when you book; at SkinRev Lab you can WhatsApp +65 8266 9585 to decide whether to go ahead or move the slot.

Is hard wax or strip wax better for a Brazilian?

Hard wax is often preferred for intimate areas because it sets around the hair and grips the hair more than the skin. Strip wax is quicker on large areas such as legs. For either, the wax should be warm rather than hot and never used over broken skin; ask which wax will be used when you book.

How long does a Brazilian wax last?

Usually three to six weeks before regrowth is noticeable. Most people rebook every four to six weeks. Do not shave in between, so the hair is long enough for the next wax.

How do I prevent ingrown hairs after a Brazilian wax?

Skip heat, pools and the gym for 24 hours, wear loose cotton underwear, keep the area clean and dry, and start exfoliating gently from day three. Do not pick at bumps. If they become painful, fill with pus or keep coming back, see a doctor, and consider laser hair removal for the longer term.

Do you do male Brazilian waxing (Boyzilian) in Singapore?

Yes. At SkinRev Lab a Boyzilian is S$118, GST included, or S$68 as a first-visit rate, done in a private room by one Aesthetic Specialist. A perianal strip can be added at S$28. For long-term reduction, laser is performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation.

Should I wax or laser my bikini area?

Wax if you want a clean result now, have light or grey hair, or are not ready to commit to a course. Consider laser if you want less hair over time or keep getting ingrown hairs. Laser is a medical treatment performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, priced at consultation; SkinRev Lab does not perform it.
