HydraFacial before and after what to expect, from the first hour to the next six weeks
What a HydraFacial changes, how long it lasts, how to prepare and how to look after your skin afterwards, written so you know what is normal and what is worth mentioning to us.
Quick answer
- Straight after a HydraFacial, skin usually looks clearer, smoother and more hydrated. Any pinkness tends to settle within the hour.
- Make-up can go on the same day, and most people go straight back to work.
- Over the following weeks pores refill and the effect fades, which is why a rhythm of every four to six weeks is common.
- For a day or two afterwards, skip scrubs, strong acids and retinoids, wear sunscreen, and avoid saunas, hot yoga and long sun exposure on the day.
Before
How to prepare
- Pause retinoids, acid toners and scrubs for a few days before; we confirm the timing when you book.
- Avoid facial waxing, threading, peels or laser in the days around your facial, and tell us about anything planned.
- If you are taking or have recently stopped isotretinoin, tell us before booking: facials that exfoliate are usually postponed until your doctor says the skin has recovered.
- Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have sunburn, an active cold sore, a skin infection, or recent injections or fillers.
- Come as you are; make-up is removed at the start.
During
What the 45 minutes feel like
The cleanse and peel feels cool and slightly tingly. Extraction feels like a wet, pulling suction, strongest over the nose and chin where congestion sits. The serum step is soothing. It should not hurt; if anything feels uncomfortable, say so and the settings can be adjusted.
At the end, many people are surprised by the collection jar: it shows the debris lifted from the pores, which is part of why the result is visible straight away.
After
The timeline: what you may see
| When | What you may see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Straight after | Clearer pores, smoother texture, a hydrated look; sometimes mild pinkness | Sunscreen; make-up is fine |
| That evening | Pinkness, if any, has usually settled | Gentle cleanser and moisturiser; skip strong actives |
| Days 1 to 3 | The hydrated, fresh look is at its best | Good time for an event or photos |
| Week 1 to 2 | Skin still looks clearer; oil gradually returns | Normal routine, daily sunscreen |
| Week 3 to 6 | Pores refill and the effect fades | Time to book again if you liked the result |
Aftercare
Do's and don'ts for the first 48 hours
- Do use a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser and sunscreen every morning.
- Do drink water and keep up your usual routine otherwise.
- Don't use scrubs, peels, acid toners or retinoids for a day or two.
- Don't have a sauna, steam room or very hot workout on the same day.
- Don't pick at any spot that surfaces; tell us if one appears.
- Don't book facial waxing or a laser for the same day.
Photos
How to read HydraFacial before-and-after photos
The changes a HydraFacial makes are real but subtle: fewer visible blackheads, a smoother surface and more light reflected from hydrated skin. They show best in photos taken in the same light, from the same angle, without filters.
Be wary of before-and-after images that show lifted jawlines, faded scars or cleared melasma after a single HydraFacial. A cleansing and hydrating facial does not do those things, and an image that suggests it has been taken in different conditions or edited.
How often
How long results last, and how often to go
The clearer, hydrated look usually lasts days to a couple of weeks, depending on how oily your skin is, the air-conditioning you sit in and your routine. Congestion returns because the skin keeps producing oil.
For blackheads and congestion, every four to six weeks is a common rhythm. Before an event, two to five days ahead is the sweet spot. There is no benefit in going more often than every two weeks.
Evidence
What the studies show
The research on hydradermabrasion is small. A 2008 study reported smoother texture after a series of treatments. A 2022 study of 20 adults with acne found more had clear or almost-clear skin after six clarifying treatments, without a control group. A 2024 imaging study saw surface changes but no visible change in dermal collagen two weeks after treatment. In short: it cleans, smooths and hydrates; it does not rebuild collagen.
When to tell us
What is normal, and what is not
Mild pinkness that settles within hours is normal, and so is a small spot or two in the next few days as congestion surfaces. Redness that lasts more than a day, swelling, itching, a rash or several new inflamed spots are not usual: message us on WhatsApp (+65 8266 9585), and see a doctor if it is painful or spreading.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
What does skin look like right after a HydraFacial?
Usually clearer, smoother and more hydrated, with fewer visible blackheads. Some people are slightly pink for up to an hour. There is no peeling.
How long do HydraFacial results last?
The fresh, hydrated look usually lasts days to a couple of weeks. Pores refill with oil over the following weeks, which is why many people book every four to six weeks.
Can I wear make-up after a HydraFacial?
Yes, the same day. If your skin is sensitive and slightly flushed, you may prefer to wait an hour.
What should I avoid after a HydraFacial?
For a day or two, avoid scrubs, peels, acid toners and retinoids. On the day, skip saunas, steam rooms, very hot workouts and long sun exposure. Wear sunscreen.
Can I break out after a HydraFacial?
A small spot or two can surface in the next few days as congestion clears. Several new inflamed spots, a rash or redness lasting more than a day are not usual; tell us, and see a doctor if it is painful or spreading.
How many days before an event should I get a HydraFacial?
Two to five days before is ideal. It leaves time for any pinkness to settle and the hydrated look is still at its best.
Can I exercise after a HydraFacial?
Light activity is fine. Avoid very hot or intense workouts, saunas and steam rooms on the day.
Do I need to prepare for a HydraFacial?
Pause retinoids, acid toners and scrubs for a few days, avoid facial waxing or laser around the same time, and tell us about pregnancy, isotretinoin, sunburn or recent injections when you book.
