How long does HIFU last? what the studies show, and what makes results fade sooner
HIFU results build over months and fade gradually as the face keeps ageing. Here is the realistic timeline, what research says about how long the effect lasts, what shortens or extends it, how often people repeat it, and how it compares with other lifting options.

Quick answer
- How long does HIFU last? In studies, the tightening from a single HIFU treatment builds over two to three months and has been reported to last up to about a year; few studies follow people for longer, so there is no reliable figure beyond that.
- Some tightening can be felt on the day, but early swelling flatters the first few days; the lasting change comes from new collagen, which is why results are judged at about three months. Ratings by the treating team are usually higher than those of blinded assessors, so expect a modest change.
- Results fade sooner with more severe laxity, a BMI over 30, sun exposure, smoking and weight change, because the face keeps ageing after any treatment. Clinics often position HIFU as a once-a-year treatment, but there is no proven interval, and repeating it too often in a thin face can do harm.
- At SkinRev Lab, SKINLIFT® is planned as a short course; our site says ultrasound lifting results ‘last months rather than years because ageing continues’, and that most people keep the result with maintenance sessions planned at a review. Medical HIFU is performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation.
Timeline
HIFU results timeline, from day one to a year
HIFU works in two stages. Heat at each focal point makes collagen contract straight away, and the body then lays down new collagen over the following weeks. Swelling in the first few days can look like an instant lift and then fade, which is normal; the change that lasts appears gradually, over about two to three months.
To judge whether it worked, compare photographs taken in the same light and pose at the start and at about three months; the mirror and memory are poor judges of changes measured in millimetres.
| When | What is happening | What you may notice |
|---|---|---|
| Treatment day | Collagen contracts at the heated points | Redness and warmth; sometimes a slight tight feeling |
| First week | Swelling settles | A fuller, tighter look that fades; this is not the final result |
| Weeks 2 to 8 | Healing response; new collagen forming | Gradual firming along the jawline, brow or under the chin |
| About 3 months | The usual review point in studies | Compare photographs taken in the same light and pose |
| 6 to 12 months | Studies that followed people this long | Improvement still reported in many |
| Beyond a year | Little published follow-up | Ageing continues; maintenance is discussed |
The evidence
How long does HIFU last in studies?
A 2023 systematic review of 16 studies of single micro-focused ultrasound treatments, all in women, found that investigators rated 92% of patients improved at 90 days and that the improvement continued up to one year. Patients described the change as mild: 42% reported improvement at 90 days and 53% at 360 days. The authors found no longer-term data.
In a study of 20 adults treated once on the face and neck at two depths, 95% were rated improved at one year by both the physicians and the patients, yet blinded assessors judged only 6 of the 14 who could be assessed to be improved. A 2020 meta-analysis of 17 HIFU studies with 477 participants found a moderate effect and noted that most studies did not report long follow-up.
So the evidence-based answer is a modest improvement, often still present at a year, with little data beyond that. Claims of two years or more from one session are not backed by published follow-up.
Why it fades
What makes HIFU results fade sooner, or last longer
HIFU does not stop the processes that age a face, so how long a result holds depends on your face and habits as much as on the treatment. Our HIFU page puts it plainly: how long it holds varies with age, skin quality, weight changes, sun exposure and lifestyle.
Some of these you can change, such as sun protection, smoking and weight; others, such as age and how loose the skin already is, decide how much there is to gain in the first place.
- Degree of laxity: results decline as laxity increases, and heavy sagging may show little change at all.
- Body weight: a BMI over 30 is linked with weaker results, and gaining or losing weight changes how full or loose the face looks.
- Sun: in a study of 186 pairs of identical twins, the twin with more sun exposure looked older, and the gap grew with age. Singapore's UV index is high all year.
- Smoking: the longer the twins had smoked, the older they looked, with more visible wrinkles.
- Skin quality: thin, sun-damaged skin has less to work with than thicker, healthier skin.
- Volume loss: tightening cannot replace lost fat or support, so a face that is deflating will look tired again sooner.
Repeating
How often should you repeat HIFU?
No trial has found an ideal interval. HIFU and Thermage are often positioned as a single annual session, and the studies that followed people to a year support reviewing around then. At IN Eternity Clinic, many people have one treatment, are reviewed once the collagen response has had time to develop, and plan maintenance from there.
Repeating sooner is rarely useful. The result is still developing for the first two to three months, and in a thin face with little fat, over-treatment can make hollows look deeper. Decide on a repeat from photographs at review, not from a calendar or a package.
Compared
How long other lifting options last
Durations are hard to compare, because studies measure different things for different lengths of time. These are mainstream figures from published research, and from our own site for SKINLIFT®.
Energy treatments trade durability for no cuts and little downtime. If you want a change that lasts years, a surgical opinion is the honest comparison; if you prefer gradual, natural-looking upkeep, planned maintenance is part of the deal.
| Option | What the evidence shows on duration | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| HIFU (micro-focused ultrasound) | Improvement reported up to about a year after one treatment; little data beyond | 2023 review of 16 studies; 2016 one-year study |
| Monopolar RF (for example Thermage) | Tightening still evident six months after one treatment; longevity not established | 2004 study of 50 patients |
| Thread lift | Most studies show only a very limited duration of lift | 2018 systematic review |
| Fillers and biostimulators | Depends on the product, the area and the person | See our filler guide |
| Surgical facelift | Jowl correction largely held at 5.5 years and 76% still looked younger than before surgery; the neck relapsed more | 2012 study of 50 patients |
| SKINLIFT® (SkinRev Lab) | ‘Months rather than years’, kept with maintenance sessions planned at a review | SkinRev Lab's SKINLIFT® page |
SKINLIFT®
What our site says about SKINLIFT® maintenance
SKINLIFT® is SkinRev Lab's non-medical, 30-minute ultrasound lifting session for the jowls, nasolabial folds, jawline and double chin, done by an Aesthetic Specialist without numbing. It is planned differently from medical HIFU. The SKINLIFT® page notes: ‘Most clients are recommended a short course rather than a single session’, and adds: ‘Your Aesthetic Specialist will recommend a realistic number at consultation rather than selling a fixed package.’
On how long it lasts, the SKINLIFT® page says: ‘Results from ultrasound lifting build over two to three months as collagen remodels, and they last months rather than years because ageing continues. Most people keep the result with maintenance sessions, planned at a review.’ No published trial has tested SKINLIFT® itself; the research above concerns medical micro-focused ultrasound devices.
SKINLIFT® Face is S$888 and SKINLIFT® Double Chin is S$488 per session, before GST, at #B1-28 CityLink Mall, on the underground link between City Hall and Esplanade MRT; WhatsApp +65 8266 9585.
Making it last
How to help a HIFU result last
The collagen built after HIFU behaves like the rest of your skin: sun, smoking and time wear it down. The habits that protect skin in general also protect the result.
None of these will turn a modest result into a large one, but they are the parts within your control.
- Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and seek shade; Singapore's UV index is high all year.
- Do not smoke, and avoid big swings in weight.
- Keep a consistent skincare routine; for sun-damaged skin, a doctor may suggest a retinoid.
- When volume loss appears, treat it with volume rather than more heat.
- Review with photographs at about three months, and plan maintenance from what they show.
- Choose one coherent plan rather than stacking several lifting treatments close together.
Wore off?
Why HIFU can seem to wear off quickly
If a HIFU result seemed to vanish within weeks, one of these is usually the reason. Photographs taken in the same light at the start and at three months are the fairest way to judge.
If none of these explains it, ask for a review. A different approach, such as a combined plan or a volume treatment, may suit your face better than repeating the same one.
- Early swelling: the first few days can look like an instant lift, which fades as the swelling settles; the real result takes two to three months.
- A small change to begin with: measured brow lifts after one treatment are about 0.5 to 1.7 mm, which is real but easy to lose sight of in the mirror.
- The wrong candidate: heavy sagging, a BMI over 30 or mainly volume loss limit what heat can do.
- Too little treatment: too few lines, or depths that do not match where the laxity sits.
- Ageing continues: the face keeps changing after any non-surgical lift.
Doctor first
When HIFU is not the right tool
HIFU suits mild to moderate laxity. A doctor's opinion is the right first step if the skin hangs in folds, if the main change is hollowness rather than sagging, if the face is very thin, or if you have had fillers, threads or surgery in the area.
At IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, Dr Sin Yong assesses skin thickness, fat and where the sagging sits before suggesting HIFU or something else; it is priced at consultation. WhatsApp +65 8815 3008, Monday to Saturday, 11am to 8pm. He also performs VF Lift, which combines monopolar radiofrequency with focused ultrasound where planned, at SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
How long does HIFU last?
Studies report improvement from one treatment lasting up to about a year, with little data beyond that. The change builds over two to three months, then fades gradually as the face keeps ageing, so most people plan a review and maintenance.
When will I see HIFU results?
Some tightening can be felt on the day, but most of the change appears over two to three months as new collagen forms. Studies and review appointments judge results at about three months.
Why did my HIFU result disappear after a week?
What you saw in the first days was probably swelling, which can look like a lift and fades within about a week. The lasting change develops later, over two to three months.
How often should I do HIFU?
There is no proven interval. HIFU is often positioned as a once-a-year treatment, and studies support reviewing at around a year. Decide from photographs at review; repeating too soon is rarely useful and can hollow a thin face.
Is HIFU permanent?
No. The collagen it prompts is your own, but HIFU does not stop ageing, sun damage or weight change, and no study shows a permanent result. A surgical facelift lasts longer, with most patients still looking younger at five and a half years in one study.
Does HIFU last longer than Thermage?
There is no good head-to-head comparison of durability. Focused-ultrasound studies report improvement up to about a year, while an early monopolar RF study followed people for six months and left longevity open. Both need maintenance.
How long does SKINLIFT® last?
Our SKINLIFT® page says results from ultrasound lifting ‘last months rather than years because ageing continues’, and that most people keep the result with maintenance sessions planned at a review. A short course is usually recommended.
How can I make HIFU last longer?
Use sunscreen daily, do not smoke, keep your weight steady, and treat volume loss separately rather than with more heat. Review at about three months and plan maintenance from photographs.
