Retinol in Singapore how to choose it, start it, and time it around treatments

Retinoids are among the best-studied skincare ingredients for lines and breakouts, and among the easiest to overdo. Here is how the forms differ, which need a prescription in Singapore, and how to use them in heat, humidity and air-conditioning.

Quick answer

  • Retinoids are vitamin A ingredients that speed up skin renewal. From mildest to strongest, the main forms are retinyl esters, retinol, retinal (retinaldehyde), adapalene and tretinoin; the skin converts the milder forms into retinoic acid, the active form.
  • In Singapore, retinol and retinal are sold in cosmetics, while tretinoin cream is a prescription-only medicine. Adapalene is also prescription-only, but a pharmacist may supply a small pack of 0.1% for acne to people aged 12 and over.
  • Start with a pea-sized amount for the whole face two or three nights a week, on dry skin, with a light moisturiser, and build up slowly. Wear sunscreen every day, and stop if stinging, peeling or redness keeps getting worse.
  • Do not use topical retinoids during pregnancy. Stop them on the area about a week before waxing, pause them for a few days before a HydraFacial, and follow your doctor's timing around peels and lasers.

The ladder

Retinyl esters, retinol, retinal, adapalene and tretinoin

All retinoids work through the same pathway. Tretinoin is retinoic acid itself, the form that acts on skin cells. Retinal is one conversion step away, retinol two, and retinyl esters three. Each step makes the product gentler and, in general, slower. Adapalene is a synthetic retinoid that acts directly and is used mainly for acne.

Tretinoin is the most studied retinoid for sun-related ageing and also the most irritating. Retinal and retinol are considerably less irritating. In one comparison, retinol produced similar but smaller changes in the skin than retinoic acid, with fewer wrinkles after 12 weeks; the study was funded by a skincare company.

Singapore rules

Which retinoids need a prescription in Singapore

Singapore's National Drug Formulary lists tretinoin creams, such as 0.05% strengths, as prescription-only medicines with no exemption for supply without a prescription. Adapalene 0.1% gel is also a prescription-only medicine, but with an exemption: a pharmacist may supply it without a prescription for acne, at strengths up to 0.1%, in packs of up to 30 g, to people aged 12 and over.

Retinol, retinal and retinyl esters are sold as cosmetic ingredients. Be wary of products bought online that claim to contain tretinoin without a prescription, or that do not list their ingredients clearly. If you are unsure, ask a pharmacist or doctor.

Getting started

How to start retinol in Singapore's humid weather

  • Start low: a lower-strength retinol or retinal, two or three nights a week.
  • Use a pea-sized amount for the whole face, on clean, fully dry skin.
  • Keep away from the eyelids and the corners of the nose and mouth, where irritation is most likely.
  • Use a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser. Humidity outdoors does not stop air-conditioning from drying the skin indoors.
  • If you sting easily, apply moisturiser first or sandwich the retinol between two thin layers.
  • Add a night every week or two only if your skin is comfortable. Many people stay at every other night.
  • Apply at night. Sweat, heat and sun on freshly applied retinol make stinging more likely, and light breaks retinol down.
  • Give it time: changes in texture and fine lines usually take two to three months or longer.

Purging or irritation

Purging vs irritation: how to tell the difference

Retinoids speed up skin turnover, so some people with acne-prone skin notice more small spots in the first weeks, often called purging. Irritation is different: the skin barrier is being overwhelmed. The table shows the usual signs; if you are unsure, step back to fewer nights and ask a pharmacist or doctor.

Daytime

Sunscreen is part of using retinol

Retinoids can make the skin more sensitive to the sun, and they are used to improve the same sun-related changes that UV exposure causes. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapplied when you are outdoors, protects both your skin and the result you are working for.

In Singapore's year-round high UV, that applies on cloudy days and short commutes too. If pigmentation is one of your concerns, sun protection matters even more.

Combining

Using retinol with niacinamide, acids and vitamin C

  • Niacinamide: generally well tolerated and commonly used alongside retinoids, including in the same routine.
  • AHAs and BHAs (glycolic, lactic, salicylic acid): use on different nights from your retinoid, not the same night, to avoid irritation.
  • Vitamin C: simplest in the morning under sunscreen, with the retinoid at night.
  • Benzoyl peroxide and prescription acne creams: follow your doctor or pharmacist's directions on timing.
  • Scrubs, peeling pads and new actives: hold off until your skin has settled into the retinoid.
  • Hydrating ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid and ceramides help the skin tolerate it.

Around treatments

When to stop retinol before waxing, facials, peels and lasers

Retinoids thin the outer layer of skin, so treatments that lift, exfoliate or heat it need planning. Always tell the person treating you what you use.

TreatmentBeforeAfter
WaxingStop topical retinoids on the area about a week before. Wait six months after finishing oral isotretinoin.Restart once the skin is calm and not irritated
HydraFacialPause retinoids, acid toners and scrubs for a few daysSkip retinoids for a day or two
Chemical peelsFollow the provider's timing; retinoids are often paused beforehandRestart only when peeling and redness have settled
Lasers and resurfacingAs your doctor advisesOften days for gentle lasers and weeks for resurfacing; your doctor will say when

Safety

Pregnancy, sensitive skin, and when retinol is not enough

Topical retinoids are not suitable during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. Most doctors advise stopping retinol and retinal too if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, and checking with your doctor while breastfeeding. Azelaic acid, niacinamide and sunscreen are common alternatives to ask about.

If you have eczema, rosacea or very reactive skin, retinoids can make it worse; ask a doctor first. See a doctor if acne is moderate or severe, or if pharmacy products have not helped.

Retinol improves texture and fine lines gradually; it does not lift sagging skin or restore volume. For deeper lines, non-invasive options at SkinRev Lab include the Needleless SkinBooster (S$288 per region before GST) and the Rejuran PDRN Facial (S$128 to S$348), and doctor-led options such as injectable skin boosters and wrinkle-relaxing injections are available at IN Eternity Clinic, priced at consultation.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Where can I buy retinol in Singapore?

Retinol and retinal skincare are sold at pharmacies and beauty retailers. Adapalene 0.1% for acne can be supplied by a pharmacist in a small pack, and tretinoin needs a doctor's prescription.

Is tretinoin prescription-only in Singapore?

Yes. Tretinoin creams are listed as prescription-only medicines, with no exemption for supply without a prescription. A doctor can advise whether it suits your skin.

How often should a beginner use retinol?

Two or three nights a week, a pea-sized amount for the whole face. Increase slowly only if your skin stays comfortable; many people do well on every other night.

Is retinol safe during pregnancy?

Topical retinoids are not suitable during pregnancy, and most doctors advise stopping retinol and retinal too. Check with your doctor about alternatives, and before using retinoids while breastfeeding.

Should I stop retinol before waxing?

Yes. Stop topical retinoids on the area about a week before waxing, because they thin the skin and wax can lift it. If you have taken oral isotretinoin, wait six months after finishing.

Can I use retinol with niacinamide?

Yes. Niacinamide is generally well tolerated and often used in the same routine. Keep strong acids and scrubs to different nights from your retinoid.

How long does retinol take to work?

Usually two to three months for texture and fine lines, and 12 weeks or longer for acne. Consistent use at a tolerable frequency matters more than strength.

Can I use retinol before a HydraFacial?

Pause retinoids, acid toners and scrubs for a few days before, and skip retinoids for a day or two afterwards. Tell us at booking if you use a prescription retinoid or have taken isotretinoin.
