Underarm whitening in Singapore start with the cause, then treat the colour

Dark underarms are common and usually harmless, but the cause decides what works. Here is how to tell friction and shaving marks from something a doctor should check, what SKINPINK at SkinRev Lab costs, and where laser fits.

Written & medically reviewed by Dr Sin Yong · 17 October 2026

Quick answer

  • Most dark underarms come from friction, shaving or plucking irritation, deodorant or fragrance reactions, and hair shadow under the skin. Velvety, thickened darkening is different: it can be acanthosis nigricans, which is often linked to insulin resistance and should be checked by a doctor first.
  • At SkinRev Lab, a non-invasive aesthetic centre at CityLink Mall, SKINPINK is a needle-free topical brightening session for flat, friction- or shaving-related darkening: S$288 per region per session, with a first region at S$88, before GST.
  • Whatever the treatment, the trigger has to change too. Gentler hair removal, breathable clothing and unscented products stop new pigment forming as fast as treatment clears it.
  • For stubborn darkening, laser toning and pico laser are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, Pacific Plaza, and priced at consultation by the clinic.

Why underarms turn dark

Underarm skin is thin, warm, often damp and rubbed every time you move your arms. That makes it quick to react, and when skin is irritated again and again it can leave behind extra pigment, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It is rarely about hygiene.

The darkening can look evenly brown, patchy, greyish from hair just under the surface, or slightly thickened. These usually have different causes:

  • Shaving and plucking: razor bumps, small cuts and repeated irritation can leave pigment over time. Plucking tends to be harsher on the skin than shaving.
  • Friction: tight sleeves, bra straps and skin rubbing against skin, made worse by heat and sweat.
  • Deodorant and fragrance reactions: some people react to scented or harsh products, and each reaction can add colour.
  • Hair shadow: dark stubble below the surface shows as a grey cast. It is not pigment in the skin, and it fades once hair is reduced.
  • Hormonal change: pregnancy and other hormonal shifts can darken underarm and intimate skin.
  • Acanthosis nigricans: velvety, thicker, darker skin in folds such as the underarms and back of the neck, often associated with insulin resistance and higher body weight.

See a doctor first

When dark underarms are a health question, not a cosmetic one

Acanthosis nigricans looks like dark, velvety patches in skin folds. A review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology describes its link with insulin resistance, and notes that management starts with weight reduction and treating any underlying cause (Das et al., 2020). Brightening products and facials will not fix the thickening, and treating the colour alone can delay a useful health check.

See a doctor before any whitening treatment if any of the following apply. Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic can arrange simple checks and advise on medical options.

  • The skin feels velvety, rough or thicker than the skin around it.
  • Similar dark patches appear on the back of the neck, the groin or under the breasts.
  • The darkening appeared or spread quickly.
  • You have recently gained weight, have a family history of diabetes, or have symptoms such as excess thirst or tiredness.
  • Only one side is affected, or there is a lump, soreness or a rash.

What whitening creams can and cannot do

Over-the-counter brightening creams can help flat, friction-related darkening a little, slowly. Most work by reducing the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme skin uses to make melanin, so they slow new pigment rather than erase what is there. Expect weeks, not days, and only if the irritation behind the darkening has also stopped.

A 2025 systematic review of underarm darkening found only ten studies. Several topical agents reduced pigmentation to varying degrees, but there is no standard treatment (Vahabi et al., 2025). That is an honest frame for any cream or treatment.

  • Creams can: gradually even out mild pigment, support results between professional sessions, and help keep colour from creeping back.
  • Creams cannot: remove hair shadow, change velvety acanthosis nigricans, or keep up if you are still shaving with a blunt razor or wearing tight, rubbing sleeves.
  • Be careful with scrubs, strong acids and heavily fragranced products on underarm skin. Irritation there can add the very pigment you are trying to clear.
  • Give one product a fair trial before adding another. Layering several actives on thin skin is a common reason underarms get worse.

At SkinRev Lab

SKINPINK: in-centre brightening for underarms

SKINPINK is SkinRev Lab's topical brightening protocol for the underarms, inner thighs, intimate area and areola. There are no needles, lasers or energy devices involved. After a cleanse, an Aesthetic Specialist applies a brightening complex with kojic acid, glutathione, 4-n-butylresorcinol (Rucinol), retinol, bisabolol and genistein, massages it in, leaves it for a set time, then rinses, neutralises and finishes with a barrier cream.

Sessions take about 30 to 60 minutes, in a private room at CityLink Mall. Most clients go back to normal activities straight after, and any mild redness usually settles quickly. A course is planned at your assessment, with sessions usually 7 to 10 days apart, then maintenance every 3 to 6 months if you want to hold the result. Individual results vary.

SKINPINK suits women and men with flat darkening from friction, shaving, waxing or hormonal change. It is not designed for velvety thickening, which needs a doctor, and it is not hair removal.

  • Avoid shaving, waxing or laser hair removal on the area for at least 3 days before each session, so the skin is intact.
  • Use sun protection on any treated skin that is exposed.
  • Tell your Aesthetic Specialist about any recent irritation, cuts or rashes in the area; the session may be moved.

Hair removal

Shaving, plucking, waxing or laser: the effect on dark underarms

Because hair removal is one of the main triggers, the way you remove underarm hair matters as much as the brightening you choose.

Shaving does not create pigment by itself, but nicks, razor bumps and daily scraping add irritation, and stubble under the skin keeps a grey shadow. Plucking pulls on the follicle and tends to be harsher. Waxing removes hair from the root, so there is no stubble shadow and regrowth is slower and finer, usually every 4 to 6 weeks; like any hair removal it can still irritate, and ingrown hairs are possible without aftercare.

For people who want to stop removing underarm hair so often, laser hair removal reduces hair over the long term. At IN Eternity Clinic it is performed by Dr Sin Yong on the Lutronic Clarity II, which has two wavelengths, 755 nm and 1064 nm, chosen to suit your skin tone. SkinRev Lab does not offer laser hair removal or IPL.

  • If you shave: use a sharp razor and a gentle gel, shave in the direction of hair growth and moisturise afterwards.
  • If you wax: let hair reach about 5 mm, skip hot showers, sauna, pool and gym for 24 hours, and start gentle exfoliation again after three days.
  • Space any hair removal at least 3 days before a SKINPINK session.

IN Eternity Clinic

Laser for stubborn underarm darkening

Laser is a medical treatment. It is considered once irritation and friction have been dealt with and the darkening persists. It is performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, and priced at consultation by the clinic. SkinRev Lab can pass your enquiry on, or you can WhatsApp the clinic on +65 8815 3008.

Underarm skin is thin and reacts quickly, so people with darker skin, or a history of marks after shaving cuts, should expect a slower, gentler plan.

  • Laser toning: low-energy 1064 nm Q-switched Nd:YAG passes that gradually break down excess melanin. It is the laser most studied for this area, used with conservative settings and spaced sessions.
  • Pico laser (T2 Frax Radiance): picosecond pulses fragment pigment with less heat, used for stubborn darkening once irritation and friction have been addressed.

Getting an assessment at CityLink Mall

SkinRev Lab is at #B1-28 CityLink Mall, 1 Raffles Link, Singapore 039393, in the underground link between City Hall MRT (EW13/NS25) and Esplanade MRT (CC3). We are open daily, 11am to 8pm. WhatsApp +65 8266 9585 to book.

At the first visit your Aesthetic Specialist looks at the skin, asks how you remove hair and which products you use, and tells you plainly if the darkening looks like something the doctor should see first. If SKINPINK suits you, the course is set out before you commit.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

How much is underarm whitening in Singapore at SkinRev Lab?

SKINPINK for the underarms is S$288 per session before GST, and new clients can try one region at S$88. Darkening responds gradually, so a course is usually planned at your assessment rather than a single session.

What causes dark underarms?

Most often shaving or plucking irritation, friction from clothing and skin folds, and reactions to deodorant or fragrance, which can all leave pigment behind. Hair under the skin adds a grey shadow. Velvety, thickened darkening can be acanthosis nigricans, often linked to insulin resistance, and should be checked by a doctor.

Can whitening creams lighten dark armpits?

They can help mild, flat pigment gradually, mainly by slowing new melanin, but only if the irritation causing it stops. They do not remove hair shadow or treat velvety thickening, and harsh or fragranced products can make underarm skin darker.

Is SKINPINK hair removal?

No. SKINPINK is a topical brightening treatment for pigment. SkinRev Lab does not offer laser hair removal or IPL. Laser hair removal is performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation.

Will waxing make my underarms darker than shaving?

Waxing removes hair from the root, so there is no stubble shadow and regrowth is slower and finer. Any hair removal can irritate, though, so good aftercare matters. Plucking tends to be the harshest option for skin that is already darkening.

Does laser whitening for underarms hurt?

Most people feel quick snapping or warm pricking during low-energy laser toning, usually tolerable without numbing, and the skin may look a little pink afterwards. It is a medical treatment performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, who will explain what to expect for your skin.

Can men have underarm whitening?

Yes. SKINPINK is used by men with underarm, inner thigh or groin darkening, in a private room, at the same price of S$288 per region per session before GST.

How long do results last?

Results are not fixed. Friction, shaving and hormonal change can bring colour back, which is why reducing the trigger matters and maintenance sessions every 3 to 6 months are suggested for SKINPINK. Individual results vary.
