Skin Whitening Treatment in Singapore what it can change, and what it should not
Safe whitening means fading extra pigment and bringing back an even, clear tone. It does not mean changing the colour you were born with, and products that promise to are the ones HSA keeps warning about.

Quick answer
- Realistic "whitening" or skin lightening treatment evens out pigment that sits on top of your natural colour: sun spots, post-acne marks, melasma, and darkening from friction or shaving. No safe treatment changes your natural skin colour.
- Be wary of whitening creams from unknown sellers. HSA has found mercury, hydroquinone and potent steroids in creams sold here, including an underarm whitening cream in October 2024. Hydroquinone is prescription-only in Singapore.
- Glutathione injections and drips have little evidence for skin lightening and no long-term safety data. Singapore Medical Council guidelines placed skin whitening injections among low-evidence procedures that doctors may no longer offer outside an approved clinical trial.
- What helps: daily sunscreen, topicals guided by a doctor, pigment lasers by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic (priced at consultation), facials at SkinRev Lab for dullness, and SKINPINK for underarms, bikini line, intimate area and inner thighs at S$288 per region, first region S$88, before GST.
The honest frame
What skin whitening can and cannot mean
Your baseline skin colour is largely inherited. On top of it, sun exposure, inflammation, friction and hormones can add extra pigment: a tan, sun spots, marks after pimples, melasma patches, or darker underarms and inner thighs. That extra pigment is what treatment can realistically fade.
So a sensible goal is even, clear, healthy-looking skin in your own shade, not a lighter shade than the one you were born with. Anything sold as making your whole complexion permanently fairer, quickly, deserves suspicion; that promise is exactly what adulterated creams trade on.
Many people searching for whitening are really dealing with dullness, which is a surface problem of dead-cell build-up and dehydration rather than pigment. That is worth knowing, because it changes what will help.
Safety first
Whitening creams: what HSA has found
Singapore's Health Sciences Authority has repeatedly warned about lightening creams. In 2019 it tested five creams sold online and in shops: one contained mercury at more than 40,000 times the permitted limit, and another contained hydroquinone, which is prescription-only here and prohibited in over-the-counter skincare.
In October 2024, HSA warned about an underarm whitening cream sold on e-commerce platforms and at a Lucky Plaza shop. It contained very high levels of mercury, a potent steroid (betamethasone valerate) and a preservative not allowed in cosmetic creams. A buyer reported it because the results were suspiciously quick and effective.
Mercury can cause rashes and blotchy skin, and long-term exposure can damage the kidneys, digestive and nervous systems. Unsupervised steroid creams can thin the skin and cause withdrawal flares when stopped.
- Be wary of products that promise fast or miraculous results, or claim to be "100% natural", "harmless" or free of side effects.
- Buy from reputable pharmacies or retailers with an established presence in Singapore, not unknown online sellers.
- If you have been using a cream like this, see a doctor rather than stopping suddenly on your own, especially if it may contain a steroid.
Glutathione
Glutathione injections and drips: what the evidence and guidelines say
Glutathione is an antioxidant the body makes itself. In the lab it shifts melanin production towards lighter pigment, which is why it is sold as a whitening supplement, cream and intravenous drip.
The evidence for injections is thin. A 2016 review found no studies of intravenous glutathione for skin lightening and no safety data for long-term use for any purpose. A 2024 systematic review found only one placebo-controlled study of intravenous glutathione, and its authors concluded the route should not be used because of lack of efficacy and side effects. Oral and topical forms showed modest effects in small trials, but an earlier systematic review judged the evidence inconclusive.
In Singapore, the Singapore Medical Council's 2008 aesthetic guidelines listed skin whitening injections among procedures with a low or very low level of evidence. The current 2016 edition states that, after a Ministry of Health review, those procedures are no longer allowed except within a formal, approved clinical trial.
SkinRev Lab does not give injections of any kind, and whitening drips are not among the treatments listed for IN Eternity Clinic. SKINPINK does contain glutathione, but as one ingredient in a cream applied to the skin, not injected.
What helps
What actually helps uneven tone
- Sun protection first. Singapore's UV is highest between 11am and 3pm. NEA advises sunscreen of at least SPF 30, shade or an umbrella, a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. For dark spots, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests a tinted sunscreen with iron oxide, which also helps against visible light.
- Gentle topicals. Azelaic acid, glycolic acid, kojic acid, retinoids and vitamin C can fade dark spots gradually. Stronger agents such as hydroquinone belong under a doctor's supervision.
- Patience. Once the cause stops, a mark a few shades darker than your skin usually fades within 6 to 12 months; deeper pigment can take years.
- The right diagnosis. Melasma, sun spots and post-acne marks look alike but need different plans, and a spot that is new, changing or bleeding needs a doctor first.
Match the concern
Your concern, and the usual route
A starting point, not a diagnosis. SkinRev Lab prices are per session, before GST. Medical treatments at IN Eternity Clinic are performed by Dr Sin Yong and priced at consultation by the clinic. Results vary.
| Concern | What is going on | Usual route | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dull, sallow skin | Surface build-up and dehydration | HydraFacial Syndeo, Needleless SkinBooster or Rejuran® PDRN Facial, plus sunscreen | SkinRev Lab, from S$128 |
| Sun spots and freckles | Extra pigment from years of UV | Pigment laser once the doctor has confirmed what they are | IN Eternity Clinic |
| Post-acne marks | Pigment left after inflammation | Control acne, sunscreen, gentle brightening; laser if stubborn | SkinRev Lab for mild marks; IN Eternity Clinic if long-standing |
| Melasma | Hormone-, heat- and UV-driven patches | Doctor's long-term plan, strict sun protection, cautious laser | IN Eternity Clinic |
| Underarms, bikini line, inner thighs | Friction, shaving or hormonal darkening | SKINPINK topical brightening; gentler hair removal | SkinRev Lab, S$288 per region |
| Velvety, thickened dark skin in folds | Possibly acanthosis nigricans | Medical check first, not whitening | A doctor |
| Natural skin colour | Inherited baseline | Nothing safe changes it; sun protection stops a tan adding to it | Not a treatment goal |

Pigment lasers at IN Eternity Clinic
Where pigment is defined, deeper or stubborn, lasers are considered once a doctor has confirmed what it is. At IN Eternity Clinic, the clinic SkinRev Lab is affiliated with, Dr Sin Yong (MBBS Singapore, MRCS Edinburgh, MSc Practical Dermatology Cardiff) chooses the laser and settings after examining your skin.
- Laser Toning: low-energy 1064 nm Q-switched Nd:YAG passes that fade scattered pigment gradually over a course. Settings stay conservative, because over-treatment can leave pale, mottled patches.
- Pico Laser (T2 Frax Radiance): picosecond pulses that break pigment into fine particles with less heat, for sun spots, freckles, uneven tone and post-acne marks.
- R2 Glow Laser: a gentle brightening course for dull, uneven tone and scattered sun-related pigment.
Facials at SkinRev Lab
For dullness: facials at SkinRev Lab
SkinRev Lab, a non-invasive aesthetic centre at CityLink Mall, works on the surface: cleansing, hydration and needle-free boosters that help skin reflect light more evenly. Facials do not remove defined sun spots or treat melasma, and our Aesthetic Specialists will say so at the first visit.
- HydraFacial Syndeo: cleanse, gentle peel, extraction and a serum blend, about 45 minutes. S$288 to S$438 before GST; first-timer rate at the counter.
- Needleless SkinBooster: hydrating or tone-and-pigmentation boosters delivered without needles. S$288 per region before GST; first region from S$98.
- Rejuran® PDRN Facial: needle-free c-PDRN for skin quality and calmer skin. S$128 to S$348 before GST.
Body areas
SKINPINK for underarms, intimate area and inner thighs
Darkening in skin folds usually comes from friction, shaving or waxing, and hormonal change. SKINPINK is a needle-free topical brightening session at SkinRev Lab for the underarms, the bikini line and intimate area, the inner thighs and the areola. An Aesthetic Specialist applies a brightening complex including kojic acid, glutathione and 4-n-butylresorcinol, leaves it to work, then rinses, neutralises and soothes the skin.
Sessions take about 30 to 60 minutes, usually 7 to 10 days apart, at S$288 per region per session before GST, or S$88 for one region on a first visit. A course is planned at your assessment, and results vary. Avoid shaving or waxing the area for three days before each session. Velvety, sudden or spreading darkening should be checked by a doctor first.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
Is skin whitening safe?
Fading extra pigment with sunscreen, suitable topicals, facials or doctor-chosen lasers is generally safe when matched to your skin. Unregulated creams are the main risk: HSA has found mercury, hydroquinone and steroids in whitening products sold in Singapore.
Can any treatment permanently lighten my natural skin colour?
No safe treatment changes your inherited skin colour. Treatments can fade extra pigment such as sun spots, marks and friction darkening, and sun protection stops a tan from adding to it.
Are glutathione whitening injections allowed in Singapore?
Singapore Medical Council guidelines placed skin whitening injections among low-evidence procedures that, since a Ministry of Health review, doctors may not perform outside a formal, approved clinical trial. There are also no long-term safety data for intravenous glutathione.
Do whitening creams work?
Products with ingredients such as azelaic acid, kojic acid, glycolic acid, retinoids or vitamin C can fade dark spots gradually, with daily sunscreen. A cream that works within days is a warning sign, not a bonus.
Does SkinRev Lab offer whitening injections or drips?
No. SkinRev Lab is a non-invasive aesthetic centre and gives no injections. We offer facials for dullness and SKINPINK topical brightening for body areas.
How much is underarm or intimate whitening at SkinRev Lab?
SKINPINK is S$288 per region per session before GST, and new clients can try one region at S$88. A course is usually recommended, planned at your assessment.
Which laser is used for brightening?
It depends on the pigment. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong may use Laser Toning, Pico Laser or R2 Glow after examining your skin, and pricing is given at consultation.
How do I know if a whitening cream is safe?
Buy from reputable pharmacies or established Singapore retailers, avoid products promising fast or miraculous results, and check that it does not contain hydroquinone unless a doctor prescribed it. If in doubt, ask a doctor or pharmacist.
