Underarm whitening cream what helps, what to avoid, and how to whiten armpits safely

Most dark underarms lighten only when the cause stops, and creams work slowly. Here is which ingredients have evidence, what to avoid, including bleaching and unregistered creams, when to see a doctor, and the in-centre options at SkinRev Lab.

Quick answer

  • An underarm whitening cream can lighten flat, friction- or shaving-related darkening slowly, over weeks to months, if the cause stops too. Ingredients with some evidence include niacinamide, azelaic acid, glycolic and lactic acid, and retinoids; they mainly slow new pigment and speed skin turnover rather than bleach the skin.
  • Do not use household bleach, hydrogen peroxide or lemon-and-baking-soda scrubs on underarm skin, and be wary of creams that promise fast results. HSA has found whitening creams sold in Singapore, including an underarm cream, containing very high levels of mercury and a potent steroid.
  • Fix the cause first: stop plucking, use a sharp razor or switch to waxing, reduce friction and try a fragrance-free deodorant. Velvety, thickened darkening can be acanthosis nigricans, which is linked with insulin resistance and needs a doctor rather than a cream.
  • At SkinRev Lab, SKINPINK in-centre brightening for the underarms is S$288 per session before GST, with S$88 for a first region, and an underarm wax is S$38 for women or S$48 for men, GST included. Prescription creams and laser are by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, priced at consultation.

Causes first

Why underarms darken, and why creams fail if the cause continues

Underarm skin is thin, warm and often damp, and it is rubbed every time you move your arms. When it is irritated again and again, it lays down extra pigment, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. In Singapore's heat and humidity, sweat, tight sleeves and frequent shaving keep that cycle going.

The usual triggers are shaving with a blunt razor, plucking, friction from clothing and skin folds, and reactions to fragranced deodorants. A grey shadow can also come from dark hair just under the surface, which no cream removes. Hormonal changes, including pregnancy, can darken the area too.

A cream can only clear pigment as fast as the skin stops making it. If the irritation carries on, new colour forms as quickly as the old fades, which is the commonest reason whitening creams seem not to work.

Ingredients

Underarm whitening cream ingredients with evidence

Choose one product with one or two of these, rather than layering several actives on thin, rubbed skin. Underarm studies are few and small, so expect gradual change and judge it over two to three months.

Skincare-strength products are sold as cosmetics. Stronger versions, such as tretinoin, hydroquinone and 20% azelaic acid, are prescription medicines in Singapore.

How to use

How to whiten armpits with a cream: a simple routine

Consistency and gentleness matter more than strength. Underarm skin is already irritated in most people with darkening, and a cream that stings every night can make it worse.

Give a routine at least eight to twelve weeks before deciding it has failed, and stop and see a doctor if the skin becomes red, itchy, raw or darker.

  • Patch-test on a small area for a few nights first.
  • Apply a thin layer at night to clean, completely dry skin.
  • Skip actives for a day or two after shaving or waxing, and never apply them to cut or broken skin.
  • Start acids or retinoids every second or third night, and increase only if your skin stays comfortable.
  • Moisturise with a plain, fragrance-free cream.
  • Switch to a fragrance-free deodorant, and let it dry before dressing.
  • Wear loose, breathable sleeves, especially when exercising.

What to avoid

Armpit bleaching and other things to avoid

Household bleach, hydrogen peroxide and bleaching pastes can burn and irritate thin underarm skin, and irritation is exactly what makes underarms darker. Home scrubs with lemon juice, baking soda or toothpaste are also harsh enough to inflame the skin.

Unregistered whitening creams are a bigger risk. In 2019, HSA found whitening creams sold online and in shops in which mercury exceeded the permitted limit by more than 40,000 times; mercury can cause rashes and blotchy skin, and long-term exposure can damage the kidneys, digestive system and nervous system. In 2024, HSA warned about an underarm whitening cream sold online and at a Lucky Plaza shop that contained very high mercury and betamethasone valerate, a potent steroid. Unsupervised steroid creams can thin the skin and, if stopped suddenly, cause burning, itching and redness.

Hydroquinone, a strong lightening agent, is not allowed in over-the-counter cosmetics in Singapore. If you have used a product like those above, see a doctor, who can advise how to stop it safely.

  • Promises of visible results within days, or claims that it is '100% safe' or 'harmless'.
  • No full ingredient list, or a label only in another language.
  • Sold through social media or unfamiliar online sellers.
  • A cream that lightens unusually fast, or leaves the skin stinging, red, thin or shiny.

See a doctor

When dark underarms need a doctor, not a cream

Acanthosis nigricans causes velvety, thickened, darker skin in folds such as the underarms, neck, groin and under the breasts. It is most often linked with insulin resistance and higher body weight, and a review describes weight reduction and treating the underlying cause as the most practical steps. Less often it is related to medicines, hormonal conditions or, rarely, when it appears suddenly in adults, an internal illness.

Whitening creams do not fix the thickening, and treating only the colour can delay a useful health check. See a GP or dermatologist first if any of the following apply.

  • The skin feels velvety, rough or thicker than the skin around it.
  • Similar patches appear on the back of the neck, the groin or under the breasts.
  • The darkening appeared or spread quickly, especially in adulthood.
  • Recent weight gain, a family history of diabetes, or excess thirst or tiredness.
  • Only one side is affected, there is a lump in the armpit, or there is an itchy, scaly or red rash, which can be an infection or eczema.

Prescription

Prescription creams: when a doctor may suggest them

For stubborn darkening, a doctor may prescribe a stronger cream for a limited period, such as tretinoin or adapalene, hydroquinone, or 20% azelaic acid. These are prescription medicines in Singapore because they can irritate, and hydroquinone in particular is used in short, supervised courses.

In one small underarm trial, a mild steroid cream lightened darkening slightly more than niacinamide, probably by calming inflammation. Steroid creams thin the skin with long or unsupervised use, though, and are not a do-it-yourself whitening option.

SkinRev Lab does not prescribe. Where a prescription cream is appropriate, Dr Sin Yong prescribes it at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, after a consultation priced by the clinic, sometimes alongside laser toning or pico laser for darkening that persists; WhatsApp +65 8815 3008.

In-centre

In-centre options: SKINPINK and waxing

SKINPINK is SkinRev Lab's needle-free topical brightening protocol for the underarms, inner thighs, intimate area and areola. After a cleanse, an Aesthetic Specialist applies a brightening complex with kojic acid, glutathione, 4-n-butylresorcinol, retinol, bisabolol and genistein, massages it in, leaves it for a set time, then rinses, neutralises and finishes with a barrier cream. Sessions take about 30 to 60 minutes in a private room.

SKINPINK is S$288 per region per session before GST, with S$88 for one region on a first visit. A course is planned at your assessment, with sessions usually 7 to 10 days apart, then maintenance every three to six months if you want to hold the result. Avoid shaving or waxing the area for three days before each session. Individual results vary.

Because hair removal is a common trigger, how you remove hair matters. An underarm wax at SkinRev Lab is S$38 for women and S$48 for men, GST included, with a first-visit rate of S$28; it leaves no stubble shadow, and most people return every four to six weeks. Laser hair removal is performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation.

Evidence

What the research says, honestly

Underarm darkening is common but little studied. A 2025 systematic review found only ten studies: topical niacinamide, desonide, glycolic acid and some plant extracts reduced pigmentation to varying degrees, and Q-switched Nd:YAG laser helped in three studies, but there is still no standard treatment.

Laboratory work shows that glycolic and lactic acid directly inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme that makes melanin, in addition to speeding skin turnover, and a 40-week trial found tretinoin lightened post-inflammatory dark marks by about 40%, against 18% with a plain cream. These results come from the lab or other body sites, so they support the ingredients in principle rather than prove that any particular underarm cream works. Individual results vary.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Which underarm whitening cream actually works?

Look at ingredients rather than brands: niacinamide, azelaic acid, glycolic or lactic acid, or a retinoid. Studies are small, so expect gradual change over two to three months, and only if shaving irritation, friction or deodorant reactions are also reduced.

How can I whiten my armpits fast?

There is no safe fast way. Products that promise results in days are the ones most likely to contain mercury, steroids or harsh bleaches. Gentler hair removal, less friction and a consistent cream lighten flat darkening over weeks to months.

How do I whiten my armpits naturally at home?

Stop plucking, use a sharp razor or switch to waxing, wear loose sleeves, use a fragrance-free deodorant and moisturise. Avoid lemon juice, baking soda and toothpaste, which irritate thin underarm skin and can darken it.

Is armpit bleaching safe?

Household bleach, hydrogen peroxide and bleaching pastes are not safe on underarm skin; they can burn it, and irritation leads to more pigment. Unregistered 'bleaching' creams may contain mercury or potent steroids, which HSA has found in products sold in Singapore.

Can I use hydroquinone on my underarms?

Only under a doctor's supervision. Hydroquinone is not allowed in over-the-counter cosmetics in Singapore; when prescribed, it is used in short courses, with checks for irritation and unwanted colour change.

How long does underarm whitening cream take to work?

Usually eight to twelve weeks before a clear difference, and longer if the trigger continues. In one underarm trial, niacinamide was assessed after nine weeks.

Does deodorant cause dark underarms?

It can in some people. Fragrance and some other ingredients can irritate the skin, and repeated irritation leaves pigment. Try a fragrance-free product and see whether the area calms over a few weeks.

Are dark underarms a sign of diabetes?

Usually not, but velvety, thickened darkening in the armpits or on the neck can be acanthosis nigricans, which is often linked with insulin resistance, a step on the way to diabetes. A GP can check your blood sugar.
