Crepey skin why it forms on the neck, arms, knees and eyes, and what helps

Crepey skin is thin, finely crinkled skin that looks like crêpe paper. Here is why it appears, how far it can be reversed, and what helps on each area, from daily sunscreen and retinoids to tightening treatments and collagen stimulators.

Quick answer

  • Crepey skin is thin, finely wrinkled skin that crinkles like crêpe paper, most often on the neck, inner arms, above the knees, under the eyes and on the backs of the hands. It forms when sun damage and ageing thin the collagen and elastic fibres in the dermis, and it looks worse with weight change, dryness and dehydration.
  • Can crepey skin be reversed? Partly. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen slows further damage: in a four-and-a-half-year trial, adults who used it daily showed no detectable increase in skin ageing. Retinoids rebuild some dermal collagen over months and moisturisers improve the look within weeks, but none restores skin completely.
  • In-clinic options add more. At SkinRev Lab, SKINTIGHT microplasma treats crepey skin on the face, neck, eye area and body at S$588 per zone, and the Needleless SkinBooster supports hydration at S$288 per region (first region from S$98), before GST.
  • Doctor-led options, such as injectable skin boosters, collagen biostimulators, RF microneedling and neck and hand rejuvenation, are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation. See a doctor first if skin tears or bruises easily, thins suddenly, or has had strong steroid cream on it for a long time.

The basics

What crepey skin is, and where it shows

Crepey skin looks thin and finely crinkled, like crêpe paper or tissue paper. It often feels softer and looser than the skin around it, folds into many fine parallel lines when you pinch or bend it, and may look slightly shiny. Unlike a single deep line, it is a change in the texture of a whole area.

It shows first where skin is thin and moves a lot, or where it gets daily sun: the front and sides of the neck, the inner upper arms, the skin just above the knees, the lower eyelids, the chest and the backs of the hands. Many people notice it in their forties or fifties, but sun-exposed skin can show it earlier.

Crepiness is different from sagging. Sagging is tissue that has dropped; crepey skin is skin that has thinned and lost its spring. Most people have a little of both, and the two respond to different treatments.

Causes

Why skin turns crepey

The dermis, the layer under the surface, keeps skin firm with collagen and springy elastic fibres, and keeps it plump with water-holding molecules. Crepey skin is what the surface looks like when that support thins out.

  • Sun: ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and slows its repair, and this sun-driven ageing depends mainly on how much sun the skin gets. Singapore's UV is high all year, and the neck, arms and hands are often missed with sunscreen.
  • Age: skin makes less collagen with each decade, and after menopause the fall in oestrogen leaves it thinner, drier and less elastic.
  • Weight change: skin stretched by weight gain or pregnancy may not spring back fully after weight loss, especially on the arms, tummy and thighs.
  • Dryness and dehydration: dry or dehydrated skin crinkles more, which is why crepiness can look worse in air-conditioning and better after a good moisturiser.
  • Smoking, and long-term use of strong steroid creams on the same area, also thin the skin.

Reversible?

Can crepey skin be reversed?

Partly, and how much depends on the cause and how early you start. Crinkling from dryness improves within days to weeks with moisturiser. Sun-related thinning improves more slowly, over months, with retinoids and protection. Skin that has been stretched a long way, or has thinned a great deal with age, can be firmed and smoothed but not returned to how it was.

Prevention is where the strongest evidence sits. In a randomised trial of 903 adults in Australia, those assigned to daily broad-spectrum sunscreen showed no detectable increase in skin ageing over four and a half years, and aged 24% less than those who used sunscreen only when they chose to. Every treatment below works better when the skin is not being re-damaged every day.

In-clinic treatments then add collagen or hydration back gradually. The honest goal is skin that looks firmer, smoother and less crinkled, not a complete reversal.

At home

What helps at home: sunscreen, retinoids and moisturisers

Among creams, retinoids have the strongest evidence for rebuilding the dermis. In a randomised, double-blind study of older adults with an average age of 87, a 0.4% retinol lotion applied to one arm for 24 weeks improved fine wrinkling compared with the other arm, and skin samples showed more collagen and more water-holding molecules. Retinol is a cosmetic ingredient; tretinoin is stronger and prescription-only in Singapore.

Moisturisers do not rebuild collagen, but they change how crepey skin looks quickly, because hydrated skin crinkles less. In a 12-week study of a manufacturer's cream containing Centella asiatica and mandelic acid, applied twice daily to crepey knees and thighs in people aged 40 to 60, crepiness, firmness and hydration all improved. Look for humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid with something to seal them in; in Singapore's humidity, a lighter lotion often suits better than a heavy cream.

  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to the neck, chest, arms and backs of the hands, not just the face.
  • Start a retinoid slowly, two or three nights a week, with a moisturiser; do not use retinoids in pregnancy.
  • Moisturise after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp.
  • Avoid long, hot showers and harsh scrubs on thin skin.

Tightening

Energy-based tightening for crepey skin

Energy treatments heat the dermis so that existing collagen contracts and new collagen forms over the following weeks. For crepey texture, treatments that work in the upper dermis tend to fit better than deep lifting devices, which aim at the support layers beneath.

SKINTIGHT at SkinRev Lab uses the microplasma mode of the Alma PrimeX: a pin-tip applicator forms fine micro-channels at the surface while conducting heat into the upper dermis. It is used for crepey or mildly loose skin on the face, the neck and double chin, the upper and lower eyes, and body areas such as the inner arms, tummy and above the knees. Sessions take about 30 minutes, tightening settings usually leave mild redness for a few hours, and a short course is planned at assessment. It is S$588 per zone per session, before GST, with each 15 × 15 cm body area counted as one zone.

For more marked laxity on the arms or above the knees, Dr Sin Yong performs 4K Body Lift, RF microneedling for the body, at IN Eternity Clinic. In a study of 31 women given one microneedle RF treatment, investigators rated the upper arms as improved in every participant at one, three and six months, while the area above the knee responded less consistently.

Boosters and biostimulators

Skin boosters and collagen biostimulators

Injectable skin boosters place tiny droplets of hyaluronic acid, polynucleotides or PDLLA into the dermis to improve hydration, thickness and texture without changing shape. They are often used for crepey skin under the eyes, on the neck and on the backs of the hands, usually as a short course with maintenance.

Collagen biostimulators such as poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) prompt the tissue to build its own collagen over months, and are used where thin, crepey skin also needs more substance or where volume has been lost. In a study of 14 adults with skin biopsies after injectable PLLA, type I collagen had increased significantly at three and six months, with little or no inflammation. Both are medical treatments, performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation.

If you prefer no needles, the Needleless SkinBooster at SkinRev Lab delivers a booster solution into the skin through a specialised applicator tip, chosen for hydration or overall skin quality. It is S$288 per region for the face or neck, with the first region from S$98, before GST. It supports hydration and texture; it is not the same as an injected booster or a biostimulator.

Under the eyes

Crepey skin under the eyes

The lower eyelid has some of the thinnest skin on the body, so crepiness often shows here first, especially when the skin is dehydrated. Fine crinkles that come and go with hydration respond to moisturising; crinkles that stay at rest reflect collagen loss; lines that only appear when you smile come from the eye muscle.

At SkinRev Lab, SKINTIGHT treats the upper and lower eyes as one zone, with settings adjusted for the delicate skin, and the HydraFacial Perk Eye add-on hydrates the lower lid for a while; its price is given at the counter. For deeper crepiness, Dr Sin Yong may suggest soft injectable boosters or RF microneedling at IN Eternity Clinic.

Crepey lids are not the same as eye bags. A bag that is there all day is usually fat pushing forward, and no tightening treatment removes fat; a doctor can tell you which you have.

Limits

Realistic limits, and when to see a doctor

Crepey skin improves gradually and partly. Expect a course of treatment over months, maintenance afterwards, and results that vary with age, skin quality, sun habits and weight stability.

  • Loose skin that hangs in a fold after large weight loss is beyond what tightening can shrink; a surgical opinion is the honest next step.
  • Skin that tears or bruises with minor knocks, or is very thin on the forearms and hands, should be checked by a doctor before any energy treatment.
  • If an area has thinned after months of strong steroid cream, see a doctor before treating it.
  • A rash, itch, scaling or a patch that changes quickly is not crepiness; see a GP or dermatologist.
  • Tell any provider about pregnancy, keloid scarring, bleeding problems or implants in the area.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

What causes crepey skin?

Mainly sun damage and ageing thinning the collagen and elastic fibres in the dermis. Weight loss after stretching, dryness, smoking, the fall in oestrogen after menopause and long-term strong steroid creams can add to it. Singapore's year-round UV makes the neck, arms and hands especially prone.

Can crepey skin be reversed?

Partly. Daily sunscreen stops it getting worse, retinoids rebuild some collagen over months, and moisturisers improve the look quickly. Tightening treatments, skin boosters and biostimulators can add more. Skin can look firmer and smoother, but it does not return completely to how it was.

What treatment works for crepey skin?

It depends on the area and the cause. Surface texture often responds to microplasma or RF-based tightening plus a retinoid; thin skin that needs substance to boosters or biostimulators; and dehydration to moisturisers and hydrating boosters. A combination over months usually does more than a single session.

How do I fix crepey skin on my arms?

Start with sunscreen when your arms are exposed and moisturiser after bathing. For the inner arms, SKINTIGHT at SkinRev Lab treats crepey skin per 15 × 15 cm zone at S$588 before GST, and Dr Sin Yong offers 4K Body Lift at IN Eternity Clinic for more marked laxity. Very loose, hanging skin usually needs an arm lift.

How can I tighten crepey neck skin?

Use sunscreen and moisturiser on your neck every day. SKINTIGHT treats the neck and double chin as one zone at S$588 per session before GST, and the Needleless SkinBooster neck region is S$288. For deeper lines or thin skin, Dr Sin Yong offers injectable boosters and neck rejuvenation at IN Eternity Clinic, priced at consultation.

Does retinol help crepey skin?

It can, slowly. In a randomised study, 0.4% retinol applied to the arms of older adults for 24 weeks improved fine wrinkling and increased collagen compared with a plain lotion. Start two or three nights a week with a moisturiser, use sunscreen, and do not use retinoids in pregnancy.

Do moisturisers help crepey skin?

Yes, for how it looks. Hydrated skin crinkles less, so a good moisturiser can make crepey skin look smoother within weeks. It does not rebuild collagen, so pair it with sunscreen and a retinoid.

At what age does crepey skin start?

Many people notice it in their forties or fifties, often first on the neck, under the eyes or on the inner arms. Skin that has had a lot of sun, or has gone through large weight changes, can show it earlier. Sun habits and skin type matter more than age alone.

How much does crepey skin treatment cost in Singapore?

At SkinRev Lab, SKINTIGHT is S$588 per zone and the Needleless SkinBooster S$288 per region (first region from S$98), before GST. Injectable boosters, biostimulators and other medical treatments at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation by the clinic after Dr Sin Yong has assessed the area.
