Guide · Tech neck and neck lines

Tech neck lines why they form, and what treats each kind

Horizontal lines across the neck now show up in people in their twenties and thirties, not just later in life. Here is how tech neck lines differ from crepey or sagging neck skin, what prevention helps, and which neck lines treatment suits which problem.

Quick answer

  • Tech neck lines are horizontal creases across the front of the neck that deepen when you spend hours looking down at a phone or laptop, folding the skin along the same lines. Sun damage and the natural loss of collagen make them stay even when you look up.
  • They are not the same as crepey neck skin (thin, finely wrinkled texture) or neck sagging (loose skin and muscle bands under the jaw), and each needs a different approach. Daily sunscreen on the neck, better screen posture and careful retinoid use help prevent them getting worse.
  • At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, SKINTIGHT microplasma for crepey neck texture and early lines is S$588 per zone, and the Needleless SkinBooster neck region is S$288 (first region from S$98), before GST. SKINLIFT can be considered where looseness under the jaw is part of the picture.
  • Deeper, etched lines usually respond better to injectable hyaluronic acid placed by a doctor. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong offers neck rejuvenation with fillers and skin boosters, priced at consultation. Neck pain from posture is a different problem and needs a physiotherapist, not an aesthetic clinic.

What people mean by tech neck

Tech neck is an informal term with two meanings. In aesthetics it describes horizontal lines and creases across the front of the neck that seem to appear earlier in people who spend long hours looking down at screens. In physiotherapy it describes neck and upper-back pain from the same head-forward posture. This guide covers the skin; neck pain is a separate issue, covered further down.

Horizontal neck lines are partly natural. Many people have one or two faint rings from their twenties, shaped by how the skin is anchored to the layers underneath. What changes is depth: repeated folding, sun exposure and ageing turn faint rings into lines that stay visible even when the head is upright.

Three different problems

Horizontal lines vs crepey neck vs neck sagging

Most people with a neck concern have one main problem and a little of the others. Naming the main one is the first step, because the treatments do not overlap as much as advertising suggests.

Causes

Why neck skin shows lines so easily

Neck skin is thinner than facial skin, has fewer oil glands and sits over a thin, mobile muscle called the platysma. It bends every time you nod, look down or turn your head, so creases form along the same paths day after day. With less thickness and oil to cushion it, those creases set in sooner.

Posture adds to this. A modelling study of the cervical spine found that the load on the neck rises steeply as the head tilts forward, and many people spend hours a day in that position over a phone or laptop. The same posture holds the skin of the front of the neck folded for long periods.

Sun is the other big factor. The neck is often missed when applying sunscreen, yet it is exposed every day in Singapore's high UV, especially the sides and the V of the neck. Over years, ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and elastin, so lines deepen and the skin turns crepey.

Prevention

Daily habits that protect the neck

Prevention will not erase established lines, but it slows the process and protects any treatment you have. In a randomised trial of 903 adults in Australia, those who used broad-spectrum sunscreen daily showed 24% less skin ageing over four and a half years than those who used it at their own discretion.

  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to the front and sides of the neck every morning, not just the face, and reapply when outdoors.
  • Raise your phone towards eye level and set your laptop or monitor so the top of the screen is roughly at eye height.
  • Take short breaks from looking down; a few times an hour, lift your chin and roll your shoulders back.
  • Moisturise the neck daily; it has fewer oil glands and dries out more easily, which makes lines look more obvious.
  • Use retinoids on the neck with care. Retinol has been shown to improve fine wrinkles, but neck skin is thinner and irritates more easily, so start two or three nights a week, use a small amount, and stop if it stings or peels. Avoid retinoids during pregnancy.
  • Avoid smoking, which speeds up collagen loss everywhere, including the neck.

SkinRev Lab · Non-invasive

Non-invasive neck lines treatment at SkinRev Lab

SKINTIGHT is a microplasma resurfacing session on the Alma PrimeX. A pin-tip applicator forms tiny channels in the skin surface while warming the dermis, prompting collagen renewal over the following weeks. On the neck, settings are adjusted for the thinner skin, and it is used for crepey texture, early horizontal lines and surface laxity. Tightening settings usually leave mild redness for a few hours. It is S$588 per zone, before GST.

The Needleless SkinBooster delivers hydrating actives without injections. The neck is its own region at S$288, with the first region from S$98, before GST. It improves hydration and the look of dry, fine lines, but it does not fill an etched ring.

Where looseness under the jaw and chin is part of the concern, SKINLIFT, a needle-free focused ultrasound lift, may be considered; SKINLIFT Double Chin, covering the area under the chin, is S$488 per session before GST. HydraFacial Syndeo cleanses and hydrates the skin surface; it can leave skin feeling smoother but is not a treatment for neck lines. None of these replaces injectable treatment for deep lines, and your Aesthetic Specialist will say so where that applies.

IN Eternity Clinic

Doctor-led neck rejuvenation for deeper lines

When neck lines are etched and stay visible at rest, the most direct options are medical. They are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, after an assessment, and priced at consultation by the clinic. SkinRev Lab does not inject anything.

  • Hyaluronic acid filler for lines: a soft, low-firmness gel placed very superficially along and under each line, often in tiny amounts, to lift the crease. Neck skin is thin, so soft products and small volumes are used to avoid visible lumps.
  • Injectable skin boosters: micro-droplets of hyaluronic acid, polynucleotides or PDLLA spread through the dermis to improve hydration, elasticity and crepey texture, usually as a short course.
  • Collagen biostimulators: for broader skin quality and thinning, prompting gradual collagen building over months.
  • Wrinkle-relaxing injections: for prominent vertical platysma bands rather than horizontal lines.
  • Lifting and tightening devices: such as HIFU or RF microneedling for mild to moderate neck laxity.

Evidence

What the research says, honestly

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 studies with 379 people found that hyaluronic acid fillers improved horizontal neck lines and skin hydration and elasticity, with mostly mild, temporary side effects in about 14%. Half of the people were retreated within 12 months, and the authors graded the evidence as level 4, meaning it rests mainly on smaller studies without control groups.

In a prospective Thai study of 30 people treated with a cannula, improvement peaked at one month, dropped noticeably by three months and was then sustained to six months. A 2026 randomised trial in 188 Chinese adults found that three sessions of a non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid booster four weeks apart improved moderate to severe neck wrinkles in most participants, with mainly local, non-serious side effects.

So injectables help, but results are partial and need maintenance. For neck sagging, reviews describe focused ultrasound and RF microneedling for mild to moderate laxity, and wrinkle-relaxing injections for muscle bands. Individual results vary.

Safety

Risks and side effects to know about

SKINTIGHT usually causes redness and warmth for a few hours. In Asian skin, heat-based or resurfacing treatments can occasionally cause temporary darkening, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which is why neck settings are cautious and sunscreen afterwards is strict.

Injectables on the neck commonly cause small bumps, swelling and bruising for a few days. Superficial filler can show as a faint bluish tinge or visible ridges if too much is placed too high, and booster courses can cause tender bumps that settle. Wrinkle-relaxing injections for neck bands, if placed too deep or too much, can rarely weaken the muscles used to swallow or speak, so dosing is cautious. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, bleeding disorders, blood thinners or skin infection in the area.

Neck pain

If your neck hurts, see a physiotherapist

Aesthetic treatments change how neck skin looks. They do nothing for neck stiffness, aching between the shoulder blades, headaches or tingling from long hours over a screen. If you have pain from posture, see a physiotherapist, who can assess your posture, set exercises and advise on your workstation.

See a doctor promptly if neck pain follows an injury, is severe, wakes you at night, or comes with numbness, weakness in the arms or hands, fever or unexplained weight loss.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

What is tech neck?

In aesthetics, tech neck means horizontal lines across the front of the neck that deepen with long hours looking down at phones and laptops. The term is also used for neck pain from the same posture, which is a physiotherapy issue rather than a skin one.

Can tech neck lines be reversed?

Early, faint lines can soften with daily sunscreen, better screen posture, moisturising and careful retinoid use, plus skin-quality treatments. Deeper, etched lines rarely go away with home care alone; injectable hyaluronic acid placed by a doctor is usually the most direct option.

What is the treatment for horizontal neck lines?

It depends on depth. Early lines and crepey texture may improve with microplasma tightening such as SKINTIGHT or skin boosters. Etched lines usually respond better to soft hyaluronic acid filler or injectable skin boosters placed by a doctor, often with maintenance.

Do neck lines come from looking at your phone?

Looking down for long periods folds the neck skin along the same creases, which can make lines deeper and more noticeable. It is one factor among several; sun damage, natural collagen loss and inherited skin structure also play a part.

At what age do neck lines appear?

Faint horizontal rings can appear in the twenties, and many people notice them by their thirties. Crepey texture and sagging under the jaw usually appear later, from the forties onwards.

Can retinol be used on the neck?

Yes, carefully. Neck skin is thinner and irritates more easily than facial skin, so start with a low strength two or three nights a week, use a small amount, moisturise and stop if it stings or peels. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy, and always pair them with daytime sunscreen.

Does HydraFacial help neck lines?

HydraFacial cleanses and hydrates the skin surface, which can make skin feel smoother for a while, but it is not designed to treat neck lines. For lines and crepey texture, tightening such as SKINTIGHT or a skin booster is more relevant.

How much does neck lines treatment cost in Singapore?

At SkinRev Lab, SKINTIGHT is S$588 per zone and the Needleless SkinBooster neck region is S$288 (first region from S$98), before GST. Neck fillers, injectable skin boosters and other medical treatments at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation, after Dr Sin Yong has examined the neck.
