Wax or laser
Why we usually recommend laser for the long term
Waxing works, but it has to be repeated every four to six weeks, and bumps after waxing are a known effect. In a study of 28 people with follicular bumps after waxing, biopsies showed changes like those of ingrown-hair bumps, with a foreign-body reaction to hair or keratin in about a third.
Laser hair removal aims for long-term reduction over a course of sessions, not removal of every hair. A Cochrane review of 11 randomised trials found a short-term reduction in hair; the long-term effect is less certain, which is why a course and occasional top-ups are usual.

Prep and aftercare
Preparing for a Boyzilian, and aftercare
Most of what makes a wax go well happens in the days around the appointment.
- Grow hair to about 5 mm; very long hair is trimmed first.
- Exfoliate lightly a day or two before; on the day, skip moisturiser, oil and talc on the area.
- Shower beforehand and wear loose underwear and trousers to go home in.
- For 24 hours afterwards, skip the gym, sauna, pool, sea and hot showers.
- Wear loose cotton underwear, keep the area clean and dry, and avoid fragranced products on it.
- Start gentle exfoliation from day three to keep ingrown hairs down.
- See a doctor for painful, spreading or pus-filled bumps, or a fever.
Who should wait

A Boyzilian is postponed, or a doctor should be seen first, in these situations.
- Sunburn, broken skin, a rash or an inflamed bump in the area.
- Any sore, blister, wart or lump on the genitals that has not been checked by a doctor.
- Oral isotretinoin now or within the last six months.
- Retinoid creams on the area: stop them about a week before, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- A recent laser treatment or peel on the area.
- Hair shorter than about 5 mm: the wax cannot grip, so the appointment is moved.
