Thin lips in Singapore why lips thin, and natural ways to add shape and colour

Some lips are naturally slim; others thin with age as the upper lip lengthens and the skin and muscle change. Here is why it happens, what lip blush, filler, a lip flip and skin treatments can each do, how to keep proportions natural, and how to look after your lips afterwards.

Quick answer

  • Thin lips are often simply how a person is built, but lips also thin with age: the upper lip lengthens, less of the red lip shows, and the skin and lip muscle become thinner, while sun and smoking add fine lip lines. In Singapore the main options are lip blush for colour and definition, hyaluronic acid (HA) lip filler for volume, a lip flip to show more of the upper lip, and skin treatments for lip lines.
  • Lip blush is cosmetic tattooing that adds soft colour and a clearer border without adding volume, and typically lasts one to three years. HA lip filler adds volume and shape; in a meta-analysis, 74% of people still had fuller lips at six months and 46% at twelve months, and HA can be dissolved if needed.
  • Natural results come from proportion, not size. Imaging studies of ageing lips found lengthening and thinning rather than a simple loss of volume, so filler alone can look over-inflated; small, staged changes that keep the balance between the upper and lower lip tend to look more like you.
  • SkinRev Lab offers Signature Lip Blush, priced at consultation, and the HydraFacial Perk Lip treatment for dry, lined lips. Lip filler, lip flips and other injections are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation; SkinRev Lab does not inject.

Why it happens

Why lips look thinner with age

Lip shape is largely inherited, and a slim upper lip is common and normal. What changes with age is subtler than simple deflation. A study that combined 182 standardised photographs with MRI scans of younger and older women found that the upper lip lengthens with age, more of it becomes skin and less of it visible red lip (the vermilion), and the lip gets thinner, but an overall loss of volume could not be shown.

Under the microscope, older upper lips show thinner skin, a thinner and partly wasted lip muscle (the orbicularis oris), and collagen and elastic fibres that have degenerated. The researchers concluded that the aged look comes mainly from lost elasticity and a drooping upper lip rather than from a loss of total volume.

The frame behind the lips changes too. CT scans show the upper jaw recedes with age, leaving the lips with less bony support, and worn or missing teeth can have a similar effect. Sun and smoking speed things up: in a study of identical twins, the twin who smoked had more upper lip wrinkles and more lines on the lower lip than the twin who did not.

Thin lips: matching the option to the concern

Thin lips can mean different things: pale or blurred lips, lips that have lost fullness, an upper lip that disappears when you smile, or fine lines around the mouth. Each points to a different option, and some people need none.

Colour

Lip blush: colour and definition without volume

Lip blush, also called lip embroidery, is semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing. Soft pigment is worked through the whole lip with a fine needle to even out tone and sharpen a blurred border, which can make thin lips look more defined without changing their size. It typically lasts one to three years and fades gradually.

The colour looks two to three tones deeper for the first few days, flakes from about day three to seven, and settles over weeks two to four; a review once healed can even out patchy areas. Lip work can trigger a cold sore in people who are prone, so mention it beforehand. It is not a lightening treatment, and darker lips may need a warmer correcting tone and more than one session.

At SkinRev Lab, Signature Lip Blush is priced at consultation, with shade selection and design included. If you are also considering filler, settle the volume first and design the colour around the final lip shape.

Volume

Hyaluronic acid lip filler for thin lips

Lip filler is a soft, cross-linked HA gel injected by a doctor to add volume, define the border, balance uneven lips or restore lost fullness. The change is visible straight away; swelling peaks over the first one to two days and settles within about a week, and the result is judged at a review a few weeks later.

A meta-analysis of HA lip augmentation found that 91% of people still had fuller lips at two months, 74% at six months and 46% at twelve months. Among 1,496 participants, tenderness, swelling and bruising were the commonest side effects, while lumps, cold sore flares and allergic swelling were uncommon.

The serious risk is vascular occlusion, where filler blocks or presses on an artery in the lip. It is rare, but skin turning pale, white, blotchy or dusky, pain that keeps increasing, or any change in vision is an emergency. HA can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, one reason it is preferred to permanent fillers in the lips.

Lip flip

Lip flip: more lip show, no added volume

A lip flip is a very small wrinkle-relaxing injection into the muscle along the upper lip border. As the edge relaxes, the upper lip rolls out slightly so more of the pink shows, especially when you smile. It suits lips with reasonable volume that seem to vanish on smiling; it cannot add volume to lips that are thin at rest.

A 2025 systematic review found only seven studies that described injection sites and doses. They reported consistent outward turning of the upper lip and high satisfaction, with mild, temporary effects such as difficulty drinking through a straw or whistling. The effect wears off over a few months, and some people combine a lip flip with a small amount of filler after a doctor's assessment.

Lip lines

Lip lines and smoker's lines: treating the skin around the mouth

Vertical lines above the upper lip, sometimes called smoker's lines or barcode lines, come from years of pursing the lips on skin that has lost collagen and elasticity, and sun and smoking make them worse. Lines that show only when you purse respond differently from lines etched into the skin at rest.

A dermatology review of lines around the mouth covers wrinkle-relaxing injections, filler, microneedling with or without radiofrequency, fractional and fully ablative laser resurfacing, and deep peels, and proposes combining them according to your goals and the downtime you can accept, rather than relying on a single tool. In Asian skin, resurfacing carries a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), so settings and aftercare matter.

At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong performs injectable skin boosters for fine lines and wrinkle-relaxing injections, and can advise whether resurfacing suits you; all are priced at consultation. At SkinRev Lab, HydraFacial Perk Lip exfoliates and hydrates dry, lined lips; it smooths the surface but does not treat etched lines. Daily sunscreen, an SPF lip balm and not smoking protect any result.

Proportions

Natural proportions: bigger is rarely the goal

Lips look natural when they suit the face. The lower lip is usually a little fuller than the upper, the upper lip does not jut out beyond the lower in profile, and the lips are in keeping with the width of the mouth, the distance from nose to lip, the teeth and the chin. Ideals vary between ethnic groups and individuals, so treat these as starting points for a conversation, not rules.

The ageing research is a useful warning. Because older lips lengthen and thin rather than simply losing volume, the MRI study's authors argued that adding volume on its own does not address the cause and can produce an over-inflated look. Small, staged amounts, sometimes combined with a lip flip, lip blush or skin treatment, tend to look more like you.

Overfilling usually builds up over repeated top-ups, because HA can stay in the tissue after the visible fullness has faded. Warning signs include an upper lip that overtakes the lower in profile, a ridge along the border and puffiness spreading into the skin above the lip; a review before each top-up helps prevent it.

Aftercare

Aftercare for lip filler, a lip flip and lip blush

Follow the instructions you are given on the day; the usual points differ by treatment. If you are prone to cold sores, ask your doctor about preventive medicine before lip filler or lip blush, and use an SPF lip balm afterwards, because Singapore's UV is high all year.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

What causes thin lips?

Mostly genetics, and age. Over time the upper lip lengthens, the visible red part narrows, and the skin and lip muscle thin, while the upper jaw recedes slightly. Sun and smoking add fine lines that make lips look thinner still.

How can I make thin lips look fuller without filler?

Lip blush can sharpen a blurred border and even out colour, and a well-chosen lip liner does something similar day to day. A lip flip shows more of the upper lip without adding volume, though it is still an injection. Exfoliating and hydrating, for example with HydraFacial Perk Lip, makes the surface look smoother.

Lip filler or lip blush for thin lips?

Filler changes size and shape; lip blush changes colour and definition. If your lips are small at rest, filler is the option to discuss with a doctor; if they are pale or the border is blurred, lip blush may be enough. Some people do both, settling the filler first.

How long does lip filler last?

Commonly about six to twelve months. In a meta-analysis, 74% of people still had fuller lips at six months and 46% at twelve months. Some HA can remain after the visible effect fades, so have a review before any top-up.

Does a lip flip work for thin lips?

Only if the lips have reasonable volume and the upper lip rolls in when you smile. A lip flip turns the lip out slightly but adds no volume, so for lips that are thin at rest, filler is usually more effective.

How do I get rid of lip lines?

It depends on whether the lines show only when you purse or are etched at rest. Options include wrinkle-relaxing injections, injectable skin boosters, very soft filler, microneedling and laser resurfacing, often combined. Sunscreen and not smoking help prevent new lines.

Do lips get thinner with age?

Yes, but not mainly by deflating. Studies of ageing lips show the upper lip lengthens and the skin and muscle thin, so less of the red lip shows. That is why small, well-placed changes tend to look better than simply adding volume.

Is there a permanent fix for thin lips?

Nothing non-surgical is permanent: lip blush typically lasts one to three years and HA filler months. A surgical lip lift, which shortens a long upper lip, is performed by plastic surgeons. Permanent fillers cannot be dissolved if problems arise, which is why HA is generally preferred in the lips.

How much is lip filler or lip blush in Singapore?

At SkinRev Lab, Signature Lip Blush is priced at consultation, with shade selection and design included. Lip filler at IN Eternity Clinic is priced at consultation by the clinic, depending on the product, the amount and whether old filler needs assessing first.
