Chin liposuction in Singapore versus non-surgical double chin treatment

Liposuction for a double chin removes more fat in one go, but it is surgery. Non-surgical options change less, more slowly, with little downtime. Here is how each works, what recovery and risk look like, and how to tell which suits the fullness under your chin.

Quick answer

  • Chin liposuction in Singapore is a surgical procedure in which a surgeon removes fat from under the chin through small cuts using a thin tube called a cannula; it suits larger amounts of pinchable fat and is performed by doctors, usually plastic surgeons, not by aesthetic centres.
  • Non-surgical double chin fat removal works more gradually: a 2025 meta-analysis found that fat freezing reduced under-chin fat thickness by about 2.8 mm on average, with mild, short-lived side effects and little downtime.
  • Neither liposuction nor fat freezing tightens very loose skin, and neither reaches fat beneath the neck muscle, a set-back chin or prominent glands. The cause of the fullness decides the route, so an examination comes first.
  • At SkinRev Lab, a SKINSHAPE double chin zone is S$288 (first zone S$88) and SKINLIFT Double Chin is S$488 per session, before GST. Fat freezing, Time Freeze Laser LCLR and HIFU are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation; liposuction is not offered at either.

What it is

What chin liposuction actually involves

Chin liposuction, also called submental or neck liposuction, removes fat from the area under the chin and upper neck. The surgeon numbs the area or uses a general anaesthetic, makes small cuts, usually under the chin and sometimes behind the earlobes, and moves a thin cannula through the fat layer to suction it out. Fluid containing local anaesthetic is usually injected first to reduce bleeding and discomfort.

It reaches the fat that sits between the skin and the thin sheet of neck muscle called the platysma, which is the fat you can pinch. Fat beneath the muscle, the salivary glands and the shape of the jaw are not changed by standard liposuction. When the skin is very loose or the neck muscle shows strong bands, a surgeon may suggest a neck lift or muscle tightening instead of, or as well as, liposuction.

In Singapore, liposuction is a surgical procedure performed by doctors, usually plastic surgeons, in an operating setting. SkinRev Lab is a non-invasive centre and IN Eternity Clinic does not offer liposuction; Dr Sin Yong can assess the area and refer you for a surgical opinion if that fits better.

Recovery

Liposuction for double chin: recovery, risks and downtime

After liposuction a compression garment, for the chin usually an elastic strap around the head and jaw, is worn to control swelling. The NHS advises that compression garments are worn constantly for several weeks after liposuction, that bruising and swelling can take up to six months to settle completely, and that numbness usually resolves within six to eight weeks. Results may not be visible until the swelling goes down.

The chin is a small area, so the operation is shorter than body liposuction, but plan for visible swelling and bruising in the first week or two and follow your surgeon's advice on returning to work and exercise. Stitches, if not dissolvable, are usually removed after about a week.

The NHS lists possible complications of liposuction including lumpy or uneven results, bleeding under the skin, persistent numbness, skin colour changes, infection and reactions to the anaesthetic. A review of neck liposuction complications stresses that careful patient selection and choosing the right operation are the main ways to avoid an unfavourable result, such as an uneven contour or loose skin left behind.

Who it suits

When liposuction for a double chin makes sense

Liposuction tends to suit adults at a stable weight who have a moderate to large amount of soft, pinchable fat under the chin, skin that still recoils well when pinched, and a chin and jaw that are reasonably well projected. In that situation, removing fat changes the jaw-to-neck angle more than any non-surgical option.

It suits less well when the fullness is mainly loose skin, when the fat sits beneath the muscle, when the chin is set back, or when glands under the jaw are prominent. Removing fat from under loose skin can make the skin look looser, and a set-back chin may need projection rather than fat loss.

  • Pinch test: a thick, soft roll between finger and thumb points to fat above the muscle.
  • Recoil test: skin that springs back quickly is more likely to settle well after fat removal.
  • Profile test: a chin sitting well behind the lower lip suggests jaw shape adds to the fullness.
  • Band test: cords that appear when you clench or grimace are platysma bands, which liposuction does not treat.

Non-surgical

Non-surgical double chin fat removal: what each option does

Fat freezing (cryolipolysis) cools pinchable fat with a small applicator so that some fat cells die and are cleared over two to three months. A 2025 meta-analysis of eight studies with 206 people found an average reduction in under-chin fat thickness of about 2.8 mm and volume of about 20 cm3, with minimal, short-lived side effects. A separate 2025 meta-analysis of 28 studies put paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, where the treated fat grows instead of shrinking, at about 1 in 455 people, higher than manufacturer reports.

Energy treatments mainly tighten. A systematic review of microfocused ultrasound found a smaller under-chin area on side photographs, mainly in mild to moderate laxity, with excess laxity and a higher body mass index linked to weaker results. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong performs fat freezing, HIFU and Time Freeze Laser LCLR, a dual-wavelength laser protocol that firms skin and remodels small fat pockets under the chin.

Fat-dissolving injections of deoxycholic acid have the strongest trial evidence among injectables: in the REFINE-1 trial, 70% of treated people improved by at least one grade against 18.6% on placebo, usually over several sessions, and temporary weakness of the nerve to the lower lip occurred in 4.3%. They are a doctor's treatment and are not among those listed at IN Eternity Clinic.

At SkinRev Lab

Needle-free double chin options at SkinRev Lab

SkinRev Lab, at #B1-28 CityLink Mall by City Hall MRT, offers needle-free under-chin treatments done by trained Aesthetic Specialists. SKINSHAPE uses Miglou microwave energy to warm the fat layer and the skin above it; the double chin is treated as one 15 x 15 cm zone at S$288 per session, with a first zone for new clients at S$88. SKINLIFT Double Chin is a 30-minute N-pulse focused ultrasound session aimed at the support layers under the chin, at S$488. SKINTIGHT's neck and double chin zone, S$588, works on crepey surface skin. All prices are before GST.

VF Lift, Dr Sin Yong's Volnewmer monopolar radiofrequency protocol applied in vertical lines along the jaw and neck, is performed by him at SkinRev Lab and priced at consultation. It aims to tighten the jawline and the area beneath it, and suits early to moderate laxity rather than a large fat pad.

These options suit mild, pinchable fullness with some loose skin. They do not replace liposuction for a large fat pad, and your Aesthetic Specialist will say so at the assessment.

Side by side

Lipo chin vs non-surgical options at a glance

Fat cells removed by liposuction or destroyed by fat freezing do not grow back, but the remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain, and skin keeps ageing. A stable weight protects any result.

Anatomy

Fat above or below the muscle: why it decides the route

Under-chin fullness is not all one layer. In a cadaver study of ten necks, fat above the platysma muscle made up about 45% of the tissue weighed, fat beneath the muscle about 31%, and the submandibular salivary glands about 25%. That deeper fat and the glands sit out of reach of surface treatments.

Fat freezing, microwave and laser contouring, and standard liposuction all act on the fat above the muscle. If much of the fullness lies beneath it, or comes from glands, results from any of these will be limited, and a surgeon may discuss a different operation. If the jaw or chin is short, adding projection with chin filler can change the profile more than removing fat.

This is why one person can have a clear result from fat freezing while another sees little change: the treatment was the same, but the anatomy was not.

Choosing

Which fits you: a simple decision guide

  • Small to moderate soft fat, good skin recoil: non-surgical fat reduction such as fat freezing or SKINSHAPE is a reasonable start.
  • Mild fat with some loose skin: combine fat reduction with tightening, such as SKINLIFT, HIFU, Time Freeze Laser LCLR or VF Lift.
  • Mainly loose skin and little fat: tightening rather than fat removal; very loose skin may need a surgical neck lift.
  • Large, soft fat pad and good skin: ask for a surgical opinion on chin liposuction.
  • Set-back chin: chin projection may matter more than fat loss.
  • Firm, one-sided, growing or lumpy fullness, or a swelling that moves when you swallow: see a doctor before any cosmetic treatment.

Costs

Lipo chin vs non-surgical: how the costs differ

Chin liposuction is usually quoted as one package that may include the surgeon, anaesthetist, operating facility, compression garment and follow-up. Non-surgical treatments are priced per session or per zone, and most people need a short course, so compare the cost of the whole plan rather than a single visit.

At SkinRev Lab, SKINSHAPE is S$288 per zone (S$88 for a first zone), SKINLIFT Double Chin is S$488 per session and SKINTIGHT is S$588 per zone, all before GST. Fat freezing, HIFU, Time Freeze Laser LCLR and chin filler at IN Eternity Clinic, and VF Lift at SkinRev Lab, are priced at consultation with Dr Sin Yong, after he has examined how much fat and laxity there is.

When comparing quotes anywhere, ask who performs the treatment, how many sessions are expected, what happens if the result is uneven, and how progress will be judged, such as side-profile photos taken in the same light at the start and at around three months.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

How long do chin liposuction results last?

The fat cells removed do not grow back, so the change is long-lasting if your weight stays stable. The remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain, and the skin and neck muscle keep ageing, so the area can change over the years.

How long is recovery after liposuction for a double chin?

Expect visible swelling and bruising in the first week or two and a chin strap worn for several weeks. The NHS notes that the treated area can take up to six months to settle completely and numbness usually resolves in six to eight weeks. Your surgeon will advise on work and exercise.

Is fat freezing as effective as liposuction for a double chin?

No. Fat freezing gives a smaller, gradual change, about 2.8 mm thinner under-chin fat on average in pooled studies, with little downtime. Liposuction removes more fat in one procedure but is surgery. For modest pinchable fat, starting non-surgical is reasonable; for a large fat pad, ask for a surgical opinion.

Can I get rid of double chin fat without surgery?

Often, if the fullness is modest and pinchable. Fat freezing, microwave contouring such as SKINSHAPE and laser contouring can reduce fat above the neck muscle, and tightening treatments firm loose skin. They will not change fat beneath the muscle, glands or a set-back chin.

Does chin liposuction leave scars?

The cuts are small, usually a few millimetres, and placed under the chin or behind the earlobes, where they tend to fade. Any surgical cut can leave a visible mark, especially in skin prone to raised or dark scars, so ask the surgeon where the cuts will go.

Will I have loose skin after chin lipo?

It depends on how well your skin recoils. Firm skin usually settles over the new contour; loose skin may hang more once the fat is gone. That is why surgeons assess skin quality first, and why a neck lift or tightening is sometimes suggested.

How much does chin liposuction cost in Singapore?

Surgeons quote it as a package that may include surgeon, anaesthetist, facility and garment fees, so ask what is included. For comparison, needle-free options at SkinRev Lab are SKINSHAPE at S$288 per zone and SKINLIFT Double Chin at S$488 per session, before GST. Medical treatments at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation.

Does SkinRev Lab or IN Eternity Clinic do chin liposuction?

No. SkinRev Lab offers non-invasive options, and Dr Sin Yong performs fat freezing, HIFU and laser contouring at IN Eternity Clinic and VF Lift at SkinRev Lab. If liposuction or a neck lift suits you better, he will say so and refer you for a surgical opinion.
