Guide · Neck fat and turkey neck
Neck fat reduction in Singapore fat, muscle bands, loose skin or lines?
A full or ageing neck is rarely just fat. It is usually some mix of fat under the chin, vertical muscle bands, loose skin and horizontal lines, and each responds to a different tool. Here is how to tell them apart and what each option can realistically do.

Quick answer
- Neck fat reduction works when the fullness is soft, pinchable fat under the chin and upper neck; a turkey neck is usually a mix of that fat, loose skin and vertical muscle bands from the platysma, and each part needs a different treatment.
- In a cadaver study, fat above the platysma muscle made up about 45% of the neck tissue weighed, fat beneath the muscle about 31% and the submandibular glands about 25%. Fat freezing, energy devices and standard liposuction reach only the layer above the muscle.
- Without surgery, the usual options are fat freezing or microwave and laser contouring for fat, focused ultrasound or radiofrequency for mild loose skin, wrinkle-relaxing injections for bands, and hyaluronic acid for horizontal lines. Heavy laxity and strong bands usually need a surgical neck lift by a plastic surgeon.
- At SkinRev Lab, a SKINSHAPE double chin zone is S$288, SKINLIFT Double Chin is S$488 and the SKINTIGHT neck zone is S$588, before GST. Doctor options are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation.
Four problems
Turkey neck is four problems, not one
People use turkey neck to describe a neck that has lost its clean line: fullness under the chin, loose skin hanging below the jaw, vertical cords running down the front, and rings across it. These come from different layers, and a treatment aimed at one rarely fixes the others.
Fat under the chin, called submental fat, is the part most people mean by neck fat. Platysmal bands are the edges of the thin neck muscle, which become visible as the tissue over them thins with age. Loose neck skin comes from collagen and elastin loss, sun damage and weight change. Neck lines are horizontal creases shaped by posture, sun and skin structure.
| Problem | What you see | Main tools |
|---|---|---|
| Submental fat | Soft, pinchable fullness under the chin | Fat freezing, microwave or laser contouring; liposuction for larger amounts |
| Platysmal bands | Vertical cords that stand out when you clench or grimace | Wrinkle-relaxing injections for mild bands; surgery for strong ones |
| Loose neck skin | Skin that hangs or folds below the jaw, crepey texture | Focused ultrasound, radiofrequency, laser or microplasma tightening; neck lift if marked |
| Neck lines | Horizontal rings across the front of the neck | Sunscreen, microplasma, skin boosters, soft hyaluronic acid filler |
Self-check
A two-minute neck check in the mirror
Stand in good light with your head level, then check each layer in turn. Most necks have one main problem and a little of the others, and naming the main one is what makes a plan sensible.
- Pinch test: a soft roll you can hold under the chin is fat above the muscle, the layer non-surgical fat reduction reaches.
- Grimace test: clench your teeth and pull the corners of your mouth down. Cords that jump out are platysmal bands.
- Recoil test: pinch neck skin and let go. Slow return or crepe-paper texture points to laxity.
- Head-up test: lift your chin. Lines that stay visible are etched in; lines that vanish are mostly folding.
- Profile photo: a short or set-back chin makes any fullness look worse and may need a different approach.
- Red flags: a firm or one-sided lump, a swelling that moves when you swallow, or rapid change needs a doctor before any cosmetic treatment.
Fat
Neck fat removal: fat above vs below the muscle
Fat in the neck sits in layers. A cadaver study that weighed the tissue in ten necks found fat above the platysma made up 44.7%, fat beneath it 30.7% and the submandibular glands 24.5%. Only the upper layer can be pinched, and it is the layer that fat freezing, microwave and laser contouring and standard liposuction act on.
A review of non-surgical neck rejuvenation lists percutaneous radiofrequency, radiofrequency-helium plasma, deoxycholic acid injections and cryolipolysis as options for fat above the muscle. For cryolipolysis under the chin, a 2025 meta-analysis of eight studies found an average 2.8 mm reduction in fat thickness, and another 2025 meta-analysis estimated paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, where the treated fat enlarges instead, at about 1 in 455 people.
At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong performs fat freezing and Time Freeze Laser LCLR, which firms skin and remodels small fat pockets under the chin, after checking that the fullness is fat you can pinch. At SkinRev Lab, SKINSHAPE treats the double chin as one zone with Miglou microwave energy at S$288 per session before GST, with a first zone for new clients at S$88.
Surgery
Liposuction on the neck: when surgery fits
Liposuction on the neck removes fat above the muscle through small cuts under the chin, sometimes behind the earlobes, using a thin cannula. It removes more fat in one procedure than any non-surgical option and suits a larger, soft fat pad with skin that still recoils well. It is performed by surgeons, usually plastic surgeons; SkinRev Lab and IN Eternity Clinic do not offer it.
Recovery involves a compression strap for several weeks. The NHS notes that after liposuction, bruising and swelling can take up to six months to settle completely and numbness usually resolves within six to eight weeks; listed risks include uneven results, bleeding under the skin, numbness, skin colour change and infection. A review of neck liposuction complications stresses that choosing the right patient and the right operation is the main way to avoid a poor result.
When the skin is very loose or bands are strong, liposuction alone can leave the neck looking looser. In those cases a surgeon may suggest a neck lift, sometimes with tightening of the platysma (platysmaplasty). Dr Sin Yong can assess which layer is the main problem and refer you for a surgical opinion.
Bands
Platysmal bands: the cords of a turkey neck
Platysmal bands are the vertical cords at the front of the neck. They are the edges of the platysma muscle, which become more visible as the fat and skin over them thin, and they stand out when you talk, clench or strain. Fat reduction and skin tightening do not change them, and removing fat can sometimes make them more obvious.
For people with minimal skin laxity but visible bands on movement, reviews describe wrinkle-relaxing injections into the bands as an option. At IN Eternity Clinic these are performed by Dr Sin Yong after examining the neck at rest and in movement. Dosing in the neck is cautious, because too much or too deep can, rarely, weaken the muscles used to swallow or speak. Strong bands with loose skin usually need surgery to tighten the muscle.
Loose skin
Loose neck skin: tightening options
Mild to moderate neck laxity is where energy tightening fits. Reviews describe microfocused ultrasound and radiofrequency microneedling for mild to moderately lax neck skin, and fractional ablative lasers where sun damage and laxity occur together. These heat the dermis and deeper support layers so collagen remodels over the following weeks; change is gradual and modest.
At SkinRev Lab, SKINLIFT uses N-pulse focused ultrasound under the jaw and chin (SKINLIFT Double Chin, S$488 per session), and SKINTIGHT's Alma PrimeX microplasma treats crepey neck texture at S$588 per zone, both before GST. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong performs HIFU, RF microneedling and Time Freeze Laser LCLR, and he performs VF Lift, his Volnewmer radiofrequency protocol along the jaw and neck, at SkinRev Lab; these are priced at consultation.
Very loose, hanging skin is beyond what devices can lift. If you can gather a fold of skin below the jaw, a surgical neck lift is usually the more honest conversation.
Lines
Neck lines and crepey skin
Horizontal neck lines are partly natural and deepen with repeated folding over phones and laptops, sun exposure and collagen loss. Early lines and crepey texture may improve with microplasma tightening or skin boosters; at SkinRev Lab the Needleless SkinBooster treats the neck as its own region at S$288, with the first region from S$98, before GST.
Etched lines usually respond better to soft hyaluronic acid filler or injectable boosters placed by a doctor. A 2026 meta-analysis of 11 studies with 379 people found hyaluronic acid fillers improved horizontal neck lines and skin hydration and elasticity, with mild, temporary side effects in 14%; half were retreated within 12 months, and the evidence level was low. At IN Eternity Clinic, neck rejuvenation with filler and skin boosters is performed by Dr Sin Yong and priced at consultation.
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen on the front and sides of the neck matters in Singapore's year-round high UV, and keeps any treatment from working against new sun damage.

Costs and next steps
Neck fat reduction cost in Singapore, and where to start
Costs vary because neck treatment can mean a single non-surgical zone, a course of sessions, injectables priced by amount, or surgery quoted as a package with surgeon, anaesthetist and facility fees. Compare the cost of the whole plan for your main problem rather than a single session.
SkinRev Lab, at #B1-28 CityLink Mall by City Hall MRT, can start you on non-invasive fat and skin options and will tell you when the neck needs a doctor first. Medical treatments are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, and priced at consultation; WhatsApp +65 8815 3008. Neck pain from posture is a different problem and is better seen by a physiotherapist.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
What is a turkey neck?
It is an informal name for a neck that has lost its clean line, usually from a mix of loose skin below the jaw, vertical muscle bands, fat under the chin and horizontal lines. Each part is treated differently, so the first step is working out which one is the main problem.
Can neck fat be reduced without surgery?
Yes, if it is soft, pinchable fat above the neck muscle. Fat freezing, microwave contouring such as SKINSHAPE and laser contouring can reduce it gradually over a few months. They do not reach fat beneath the muscle or the glands, and they do not lift very loose skin.
Is liposuction on the neck worth it?
It can be for a larger, soft fat pad with skin that still recoils well, because it removes more fat in one procedure than non-surgical options. It is surgery, with weeks of swelling and surgical risks, and it does not fix loose skin or bands. A surgeon's assessment decides whether it suits you.
Does fat freezing work on the neck?
For pinchable fat under the chin, pooled studies show an average reduction of about 2.8 mm in fat thickness over a few months, with mostly mild side effects. It is less useful for fat lower on the neck, loose skin or bands. A rare risk is paradoxical fat growth, about 1 in 455 people.
What gets rid of neck bands?
Mild bands that show on movement may soften with wrinkle-relaxing injections placed by a doctor, with effects that wear off over months. Strong bands with loose skin usually need surgery to tighten the platysma muscle. Fat reduction and skin tightening do not change bands.
Will losing weight reduce neck fat?
Often, partly. Fat under the chin usually shrinks with overall weight loss, but genetics decides how much is stored there, so slim people can still have it. Weight loss can also make loose skin and bands more visible, which is why the plan should look at all the layers.
How much does neck fat reduction cost in Singapore?
It depends on the method. At SkinRev Lab, a SKINSHAPE zone is S$288 and SKINLIFT Double Chin is S$488 per session, before GST. Fat freezing, HIFU, injections and other medical treatments at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation, and surgical quotes come from the surgeon.
Can neck exercises reduce neck fat?
Exercises can strengthen the neck muscles and help posture, but they do not reduce fat in one spot. They are a reasonable habit alongside sunscreen and screen posture, not a substitute for fat reduction where fat is the main problem.
