Laser scar removal in Singapore which laser suits which scar, and when a laser is not enough

Scar lasers are not interchangeable. Fractional CO2, non-ablative, vascular and pigment lasers each change a different part of a scar, so the plan starts with what makes yours visible: its depth, texture, redness or colour.

Quick answer

  • Laser scar removal in Singapore works by matching the laser to what makes the scar visible, because no laser erases scar tissue. Ablative fractional CO2 resurfaces sunken and textured scars, non-ablative fractional lasers remodel milder or newer scars with less downtime, vascular lasers such as the pulsed dye laser target redness in raised scars, and pico or Q-switched lasers fade brown marks rather than texture.
  • Many scars need more than a laser. Tethered rolling scars are released by subcision first, narrow ice pick pits respond better to TCA CROSS, and lost volume may need an injectable; a 2026 network meta-analysis of 56 randomised trials found combinations generally did better than single treatments for moderate to severe acne scars.
  • Scar laser treatment is usually a course of sessions spaced weeks apart, with downtime ranging from a few hours of redness after non-ablative lasers to about a week of crusting after fractional CO2. In Asian skin, temporary darkening (PIH) is the main risk, and keloid-prone skin needs a different, cautious plan.
  • In Singapore these are medical lasers performed by a doctor. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong offers S3 Resurfacing (fractional CO2), FSX Laser, the Luminescence Laser and 4D Scar Reconstruction, priced at consultation; a pulsed dye laser is not among the lasers listed there. SkinRev Lab does not perform lasers.

Laser scar removal in Singapore: what a laser can change

Scar tissue is built differently from the skin around it, so no laser turns it back into skin that was never injured. What a laser can change is how the scar looks in everyday light: its depth and texture, its height, its redness and its colour.

Each of those features answers to a different kind of laser. Ablative lasers remove microscopic columns of tissue to remodel texture; non-ablative lasers heat collagen under an intact surface; vascular lasers target the blood vessels that keep a young scar red; pigment lasers break up melanin in brown marks. Asking which laser is strongest misses the point: a powerful resurfacing laser does little for a red scar, and a pigment laser cannot lift a dent.

So the first step is not choosing a machine but describing the scar: sunken or raised, red, brown or pale, new or settled, single or one of many. Most acne scarring is a mix, which is why one face may need two lasers and a non-laser step as well.

Which laser suits which scar

This is the pattern most doctors follow. It reflects a 2022 international consensus of 24 dermatologists and plastic surgeons, who placed ablative and non-ablative fractional lasers, vascular lasers and radiofrequency devices among the first-line options for many acne scar types. A doctor confirms the scar type first, because a treatment that helps one kind of scar can worsen another.

Ablative

Fractional CO2: S3 Resurfacing for sunken and textured scars

Fractional CO2 light at 10,600 nm is absorbed by water in the skin. Each microbeam vaporises a narrow column of tissue and leaves untouched skin in between, which heals faster than older full-surface resurfacing and sets off collagen remodelling that continues for months. Because it removes tissue rather than only heating it, it makes the largest structural change per session of the lasers on this page.

At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong uses the DEKA Tetra Pro with his S3 Resurfacing protocol. Rather than one even pass, each scar is treated with deeper single shots into its floor and edges, then the surrounding skin receives a lighter fractional pass so the scar blends in. It suits settled sunken and textured acne scars, flat or dented surgical and injury scars, and textured stretch marks.

The trade-off is recovery and pigment risk. Expect about five to seven days of swelling and fine crusts, pinkness for a few weeks, and a higher chance of temporary darkening in Asian skin than with gentler options. It is not used over active acne, and thick raised scars and keloids are planned differently, because ablative injury can provoke them.

Non-ablative

Non-ablative lasers: FSX and Luminescence for milder or newer scars

Non-ablative fractional lasers heat the dermis in a grid of microscopic zones while the surface stays intact and acts as a natural dressing. There is no open wound, so redness usually lasts hours to a few days, but each session does less than fractional CO2 and change builds gradually over a course.

FSX Laser is Dr Sin Yong's multi-pass protocol combining thulium and erbium-glass laser energy, set zone by zone. It is used for mild superficial or textural scarring, enlarged pores and stretch marks, not for deep boxcar or ice pick scars. The Luminescence Laser is his non-ablative protocol for surgical and injury scars that are flat, slightly raised, red or textured, with settings calibrated for skin types III to VI; it is also one supporting step in keloid plans.

Non-ablative lasers are often chosen for newer scars that are still remodelling, for people who cannot take a week off, and for skin that darkens easily, though settings still need care. For established thick, raised scars the evidence is weak: a Cochrane review rated the evidence for non-ablative fractional laser in hypertrophic scars as very low certainty.

Red and raised scars

Red and raised scars: vascular lasers, and what our network offers

A young scar often stays pink or red because extra small blood vessels grow into it. Vascular lasers, mainly the pulsed dye laser at 585 to 595 nm, use yellow light that haemoglobin absorbs, heating those vessels so they close. The aim is less redness and itch, and sometimes a softer, flatter scar.

The evidence is modest. A systematic review of 13 articles found the most evidence for the 585 nm pulsed dye laser, but with low efficacy for hypertrophic scars, while the 595 nm version showed moderate, promising efficacy. A 2022 Cochrane review of 15 randomised trials found low-certainty evidence that pulsed dye laser improves hypertrophic and keloid scars compared with no treatment, and too little evidence overall to support or refute lasers for raised scars. Bruise-like purple discolouration is among the reported side effects.

To be clear about availability: a pulsed dye laser is not among the lasers listed at IN Eternity Clinic, and Nd:YAG lasers are not listed there for scars. For red or raised scars, Dr Sin Yong plans a combination such as silicone, an injection into the scar and the Luminescence Laser, and he will tell you if a vascular laser elsewhere would suit your scar better. Red acne marks, which are not true scars, are treated there with Laser Toning or the 少女光 Laser.

Dark marks

Brown marks are not dents: where pico and Q-switched lasers fit

Pico and Q-switched lasers fire extremely short pulses that shatter pigment. They suit brown marks left after acne, eczema or injury (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and uneven tone, but these marks are flat: run a finger over them and the skin is level. A pigment laser does not lift a sunken scar or flatten a raised one.

Pico lasers fitted with a fractional handpiece are a partial exception. A 2023 meta-analysis of seven studies found fractional picosecond laser improved atrophic acne scars about as much as other fractional lasers, with less PIH and pain but more pinpoint bleeding. At IN Eternity Clinic, Pico Laser (T2 Frax Radiance) and Laser Toning are used for pigment, including post-acne marks, rather than as scar treatments, and Dr Sin Yong chooses between them after identifying the pigment.

Many people have marks and scars side by side. It helps to treat colour and texture as separate problems; a doctor may address them in the same course or at different times.

Combinations

When laser is combined with subcision, TCA CROSS and fillers

Lasers work from the surface down, so they struggle with two kinds of acne scar. Rolling scars are pulled down by fibrous bands beneath the skin, which subcision cuts with a fine needle or cannula. Ice pick and narrow boxcar scars are deep, narrow tracks whose base a laser rarely reaches; TCA CROSS places high-strength trichloroacetic acid into each one to rebuild it from inside. Where volume has been lost, an injectable can support the floor of a released scar.

Dr Sin Yong's 4D Scar Reconstruction brings these together at IN Eternity Clinic: subcision for tethered scars, TCA CROSS for narrow pits, S3 Resurfacing for surfaces and edges, and an injectable where volume is missing. Not everyone needs all four. Subcision is done before laser, sessions are spaced weeks apart so the skin can heal, and you should plan for about one to two weeks of social downtime after a session.

The research supports combining. A 2026 network meta-analysis of 56 randomised trials with 1,488 patients found combination treatments generally outperformed single treatments for moderate to severe atrophic acne scars, with fractional CO2 laser plus subcision among the most consistent. RF microneedling is another option within a plan when keeping pigment risk low is the priority.

Sessions and downtime

Scar laser treatment: sessions and downtime by laser

These are typical patterns, not a plan for your scar. In studies of laser started within three months of a wound, most used two to four sessions at intervals of two to eight weeks. The number you need depends on the scar type, its depth and age and your skin, and collagen keeps remodelling for months after the last session, so the final result is judged well after it.

Asian skin and timing

PIH in Asian skin, and when to start on a new scar

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), temporary darkening after inflammation, is the most common side effect of laser treatment in Asian skin. It usually appears in the weeks after treatment and fades over months, but it can hide the improvement in the meantime. Risk rises with heat and density, so settings are cautious, and treatment is postponed if you are tanned.

Sunscreen matters for the months afterwards, but on its own it does not prevent laser-related PIH. A 2026 systematic review and network meta-analysis of 14 randomised trials found sunscreen alone was no better than placebo, while topical corticosteroids, tranexamic acid and cooling of the skin surface reduced PIH compared with sunscreen alone. These are medical decisions: any prescription cream is prescribed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic when appropriate, and SkinRev Lab does not prescribe.

Timing matters too. Laser on a new scar can start once the wound has fully closed and any stitches are out. A review of 25 studies of laser started within three months of a wound found treated scars generally did better than untreated ones, though not always significantly, and the authors called for better trials. Old scars can still improve, more slowly. For acne scars, active acne is controlled first, and recent oral isotretinoin is discussed with the doctor so that timing can be reviewed individually.

  • Tell the doctor if you darken easily after spots, insect bites or past treatments.
  • Avoid sun and tanning beforehand; treatment is usually postponed if you are tanned.
  • Pause exfoliating acids, scrubs and retinoids for about a week before resurfacing, or as advised.
  • Do not pick crusts; picking raises the risk of dark marks and further scarring.
  • Report new darkening early, so creams or the next session's settings can be adjusted.

Keloids and where to go

Keloid caution, and laser scar treatment in our network

If you form keloids, or have a raised scar that keeps spreading beyond the original wound, say so before any laser. Ablative resurfacing is not used on active keloids, because the injury can provoke them, and laser on a keloid is only ever one supporting part of a combined plan with injections, silicone and pressure. A scar that suddenly grows, bleeds, breaks down or appears without an injury needs a doctor's check first.

Scar lasers are medical treatments. At IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, Dr Sin Yong maps scars by type under side lighting and plans S3 Resurfacing, FSX Laser, the Luminescence Laser, RF microneedling or 4D Scar Reconstruction, priced at consultation by the clinic; WhatsApp +65 8815 3008.

SkinRev Lab, at #B1-28 CityLink Mall by City Hall MRT, does not perform lasers and passes scar enquiries to the clinic. Its SKINTIGHT microplasma treatment (S$588 per zone before GST) can refine surface texture and shallow marks, with a few days of pinpoint scabbing at scar settings, but it does not lift deep pits, release tethered scars or flatten keloids.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Which laser is used for acne scars?

It depends on the scar type. Fractional CO2 suits shallow boxcar scars and uneven texture, non-ablative fractional lasers suit milder scarring with less downtime, and rolling or ice pick scars usually need subcision or TCA CROSS alongside laser. Red or brown marks left by acne are not true scars and are treated with vascular or pigment lasers.

Does laser scar removal really work?

It can make many scars flatter, smoother and less noticeable, but it does not erase them, because scar tissue is built differently from normal skin. Results build over months as collagen remodels, combinations tend to work better than one laser alone, and results vary from person to person.

How many laser sessions do scars need?

Usually a course rather than one session, spaced several weeks apart. Studies of laser on newer scars mostly used two to four sessions. Deep or mixed acne scarring often needs several combined sessions over months, and the number is planned after a doctor has examined the scars.

How soon after surgery can I have laser on a scar?

Once the wound has fully closed and any stitches are out, a doctor can assess it. Research on laser started within the first three months suggests early treatment can help while the scar is still remodelling. Older scars can still be treated years later, though change tends to be slower.

Can pico laser remove acne scars?

A standard pico laser is a pigment laser: it fades brown acne marks but does not lift sunken scars. Pico lasers with a fractional handpiece have been studied for acne scars, with results similar to other fractional lasers and less PIH. At IN Eternity Clinic, Pico Laser is used for pigment rather than scars.

Can laser remove a keloid?

No laser removes a keloid on its own. Laser can help redness, texture and how the scar feels, but only as part of a combined plan with injections into the scar, silicone and pressure. Ablative lasers can provoke keloids in people prone to them, so tell the doctor about any keloid history.

Will laser make my scar darker?

It can, temporarily. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the most common side effect in Asian skin and usually fades over months. Cautious settings, no treatment while tanned and preventive measures planned by the doctor lower the risk; sunscreen alone has not been shown to prevent it.

Does laser scar removal hurt?

Numbing cream is applied first, for about 45 to 60 minutes before fractional CO2, and cooling is used during treatment. Afterwards fractional CO2 feels hot and tight, like a strong sunburn, for a day or two, while non-ablative lasers usually feel like warm pulses and leave mild redness.

How much does laser scar removal cost in Singapore?

It depends on the scar type, size and number, the laser and whether steps such as subcision are combined. At IN Eternity Clinic, scar lasers and 4D Scar Reconstruction are priced at consultation after Dr Sin Yong has examined the scars. When comparing, ask about the whole course, not one session.
