Infrared Sauna vs Infrared Pod what each one is, and what to expect

An infrared sauna is a heated room or cabin you sit in. An infrared pod is an enclosed unit you lie in, and pods differ a lot from one another. Here is how they compare, what the research does and does not show, and how to use heat safely.

Quick answer

  • A traditional sauna heats the air around you. An infrared sauna is a cabin fitted with infrared heaters that warm your body more directly, so it usually runs at a lower air temperature.
  • An infrared pod is an enclosed, usually one-person unit that you lie in. Designs vary, so ask what a particular pod actually does before comparing it with a sauna.
  • SKIN Eternity Pod at SkinRev Lab is not a sauna room. It pairs warm mineral salt-pack acupressure with far-infrared warmth while you rest fully clothed, for 30 to 45 minutes. S$288 per session, first visit S$68, before GST.
  • Published evidence on infrared saunas is limited and mostly from small studies. Drink water, keep sessions moderate, and check with a doctor first if you are pregnant or have a heart condition or high or low blood pressure.

The basics

Sauna in Singapore: the main types

In Singapore, you will find saunas in gyms, hotel spas, condominium facilities and wellness studios. They are not all the same thing, and the differences matter for comfort and safety.

A traditional, Finnish-style sauna is a wood-lined room heated by a stove. The air itself gets very hot, and water ladled on the stones adds bursts of humidity. A steam room is wet heat at a lower temperature, with the air close to saturated. An infrared sauna uses infrared heaters instead of hot air as its main heat source.

An infrared pod is a different format again: an enclosed unit you lie in, rather than a room you sit in. Some pods are close to a one-person infrared sauna; others combine warmth with other features. The word pod tells you the shape, not what happens inside.

Infrared sauna

What an infrared sauna is

Infrared heaters give off radiant heat that warms the skin and the tissue beneath it more directly than hot air does, much as sunlight warms you on a cool day. Because the body is warmed directly, infrared saunas are usually run at a lower air temperature than traditional saunas. In one study of recovery after training, the far-infrared sauna was set at 35 to 50°C.

Many people find the milder air easier to breathe and stay in. You still sweat, your heart rate still rises and you still lose fluid, so the same common-sense rules apply. How long is sensible depends on the temperature, your health and how used to heat you are. Venues set their own limits; follow them, and start short.

Infrared pod

What an infrared pod is, and why pods differ

An infrared pod, sometimes called a capsule, is an enclosed unit for one person, usually lying down. Because the space is small, it warms up quickly and is typically used for a shorter, more contained session than a sauna room.

Pods vary widely. Some are essentially compact infrared saunas. Others add features such as massage, light or, in our case, warm salt packs. Before you book any pod, ask four plain questions: what is the heat source, what else happens during the session, do you stay clothed, and how long does it last. That tells you more than the name.

At SkinRev Lab

SKIN Eternity Pod: what it is, and what it is not

SKIN Eternity Pod is a full-body recovery and relaxation session at SkinRev Lab, our non-invasive aesthetic centre at CityLink Mall. It pairs warm mineral salt-pack acupressure with far-infrared warmth. Heated salt packs are positioned along the body to ease muscle tension and support circulation, while far-infrared energy gently warms the tissue. You rest fully clothed inside the pod throughout, for 30 to 45 minutes, and most people go back to work or training afterwards.

It suits active people who want a recovery session on training days, and anyone who enjoys gentle warmth and quiet rest. Some clients book it alongside body-contouring treatments such as SKINSHAPE.

S$288 per session, with a first-visit rate of S$68, before GST.

  • It is not a sauna room: you lie in the pod, fully clothed, and the salt-pack acupressure is a central part of the session.
  • It is not a fat-reduction treatment. For zone-based body contouring, SKINSHAPE or SKINUSHAPE are the options, and neither replaces nutrition and activity.
  • It is not a skin-tightening treatment. If laxity is your concern, our Aesthetic Specialist can advise on SKINTIGHT.
  • It does not treat medical conditions. Persistent pain, injury or circulation problems need a doctor.

The evidence

What research says about infrared heat, honestly

Infrared saunas are sold with long lists of benefits. A review of the published evidence on far-infrared saunas found that the support for most of those claims is limited. It described limited, moderate evidence for normalising blood pressure and in heart failure, weak or single-study evidence for chronic pain, chronic fatigue and obesity, and consistent evidence against claims that infrared saunas lower cholesterol.

On recovery, a small Finnish study of ten physically active men compared far-infrared sauna bathing after strength and endurance training with no sauna. The authors described it as a very light load on the body and a comfortable, relaxing experience, and reported some differences in recovery measures after endurance training. Ten people is a small study, and it was not a study of SKIN Eternity Pod.

The fair summary: gentle heat feels good, many people find it relaxing, and it may help some feel recovered after exercise. It is not a weight-loss method, since the weight lost in sweat is water that returns when you drink, and it is not a substitute for medical care.

Safety

Using heat safely, wherever you go

  • Drink water before and after. Singapore's climate means many people start a session already a little dehydrated.
  • Keep sessions moderate, especially at first, and leave straight away if you feel dizzy, faint, nauseous or unwell.
  • Avoid alcohol before or during heat sessions, and do not go in on an empty stomach after a hard workout without drinking first.
  • If you are pregnant, check with your doctor before any sauna or heat treatment.
  • If you have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, or take medicines that affect heart rate, blood pressure or sweating, ask your doctor first.
  • Skip heat when you have a fever or are unwell, and keep it away from a fresh injury, sunburn or inflamed skin.
  • Tell any centre about your health and medicines before your first session. At SkinRev Lab, suitability is checked before you start.

Choosing

Which one suits what you want

SkinRev Lab is at #B1-28 CityLink Mall, 1 Raffles Link, Singapore 039393, on the underground link between City Hall MRT and Esplanade MRT, open daily 11am to 8pm. WhatsApp +65 8266 9585 to book or ask a question.

  • You want classic heat and a sweat, and you are healthy and used to it: a traditional or infrared sauna at a gym, hotel or wellness venue.
  • You find very hot air hard to tolerate: an infrared sauna is usually milder to sit in.
  • You want to lie down, stay clothed and combine warmth with acupressure after training: SKIN Eternity Pod at SkinRev Lab.
  • You want to reduce fat in a specific area: neither saunas nor the pod do that. Look at body contouring instead.
  • You have ongoing pain, swelling or a medical condition: see a doctor rather than relying on heat.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Is SKIN Eternity Pod an infrared sauna?

No. It is a recovery session in a pod you lie in, fully clothed, combining warm mineral salt-pack acupressure with far-infrared warmth for 30 to 45 minutes. It is not a sauna room.

How much is SKIN Eternity Pod?

S$288 per session before GST, with a first-visit rate of S$68 before GST for new clients.

What is the difference between an infrared sauna and a traditional sauna?

A traditional sauna heats the air with a stove, so the air is very hot. An infrared sauna uses infrared heaters that warm the body more directly, so it usually runs at a lower air temperature.

Does an infrared sauna burn fat or help you lose weight?

Not in a meaningful way. Most of the weight lost in a sauna is sweat, which returns when you rehydrate. A review of far-infrared sauna research found the evidence for most health claims is limited.

Can I use a sauna or infrared pod after the gym?

Many people do, once they have rehydrated. Keep the session moderate and stop if you feel dizzy or unwell. SKIN Eternity Pod is often booked on training days for recovery.

Is an infrared sauna safe during pregnancy?

Check with your doctor before using any sauna or heat treatment while pregnant. The same applies if you have a heart condition or blood pressure problems.

Do I need to undress for SKIN Eternity Pod?

No. You stay fully clothed and rest inside the pod for the whole session.
