Guide · HydraFacial vs chemical peel
HydraFacial vs chemical peel: how each exfoliates, the downtime, and which suits your skin
Both use acids to renew the surface of the skin, so they are easy to confuse. A HydraFacial uses a mild acid step followed by extraction and hydration; a chemical peel leaves an acid on the skin to remove outer layers in a controlled way. Here is how they compare.

Quick answer
- HydraFacial is a non-medical facial: a mild glycolic and salicylic acid step, suction extraction and serum infusion in about 45 minutes, with little downtime and usually no flaking.
- A chemical peel leaves an acid on the skin for longer to remove damaged outer layers. The American Academy of Dermatology lists 1 to 7 days of healing for a light peel, 7 to 14 days for a medium peel and 14 to 21 days for a deep peel.
- Choose HydraFacial for congestion, dullness and dehydration, or before an event. Peels at greater depth are used for pigment, rough texture and acne marks, and need more care in Asian skin because of the risk of dark marks.
- At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall (City Hall MRT), HydraFacial Syndeo is performed by trained Aesthetic Therapists; medical chemical peels are performed by Dr Sin Yong and priced at consultation.
Two ways to exfoliate
How HydraFacial and a chemical peel differ
A chemical peel applies an acid solution, such as glycolic, salicylic, lactic or trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and leaves it on the skin for a set time. The acid loosens and removes outer layers in a controlled way, and the skin then renews itself, which is why stronger peels are followed by redness and peeling.
A HydraFacial also uses acids, but differently. In the first step, a mild glycolic and salicylic acid blend is swept over the skin through a single-use tip and lifted away with suction. The second step extracts blackheads and congestion, and the third infuses hydrating serums. The aim is clear, hydrated skin the same day, not deep resurfacing.
So the difference is depth and purpose. A HydraFacial is a cleansing and hydrating facial with a light exfoliating step. A chemical peel is a resurfacing treatment whose strength is chosen for a particular concern.
Side by side
HydraFacial vs chemical peel at a glance
Healing times are the American Academy of Dermatology's figures; yours will depend on the acid, its strength and your skin.
| HydraFacial | Chemical peel | |
|---|---|---|
| How it exfoliates | Mild glycolic and salicylic acid step, removed by suction | Acid left on the skin for a set time |
| Extraction | Yes, by suction | No |
| Hydration step | Yes, serums infused | Not usually; moisturiser afterwards |
| Healing time | Very little; make-up the same day | Light 1 to 7 days, medium 7 to 14, deep 14 to 21 |
| Flaking | Not usually | Common after light and medium peels |
| Main uses | Congestion, dullness, dehydration | Pigment, texture, acne marks, by depth |
| At SkinRev Lab | Aesthetic Therapists, about 45 minutes | Medical peels by Dr Sin Yong, priced at consultation |
Which to choose
Which suits your skin
For blackheads, congestion, oily skin, or skin that looks dull and dehydrated, HydraFacial is usually the more practical choice: it clears and hydrates in one session and you can go back to work.
For pigment, rough texture or post-acne marks that a facial has not shifted, a peel chosen for that concern may do more. Melasma, deeper pigment and acne scars should be assessed by a doctor first, because the wrong peel can make them worse.
If you cannot afford visible peeling this week, or your skin is reactive, start with HydraFacial and discuss a peel later.
- Congestion and blackheads: HydraFacial.
- Dull, dehydrated skin, or an event soon: HydraFacial.
- Uneven tone, rough texture, post-acne marks: a chemical peel, after an assessment.
- Melasma or acne scars: see a doctor first.
Asian skin
Peels, HydraFacial and skin that darkens easily
Many people in Singapore have skin that is prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: dark marks that follow irritation or inflammation. Stronger peels, peels on sunburnt skin and picking at peeling skin all raise that risk. The American Academy of Dermatology advises people with darker skin tones to see a dermatologist experienced in treating their skin, because otherwise permanent pigment problems can develop.
HydraFacial's acid step is mild and brief, so the risk of irritation is lower, though sensitive skin can still flush for up to an hour. Whatever you choose, daily sunscreen matters even more in the weeks after, and retinoids and acid toners should be paused for a few days before.

Timing
Having both: spacing and order
You can use both in one plan, on different days. A HydraFacial is a gentle way to keep skin clear between peels.
After a peel, wait until peeling has finished and the skin feels normal again before a HydraFacial; after a light peel that is often about a week, and longer after a medium peel. Follow your doctor's advice for your skin, and do not have a HydraFacial on skin that is still raw, red or flaking.
Before an event, avoid any new peel in the final two weeks. A HydraFacial two to five days before is the safer choice if you already know it suits you.
Common questions
Your questions,
answered
Is a HydraFacial a chemical peel?
Not really. It includes a mild acid step, but the acid is removed by suction and followed by extraction and hydration. A chemical peel leaves acid on the skin for longer to remove outer layers, often with days of peeling.
Which is better for pigmentation, HydraFacial or a chemical peel?
For established pigment, a peel chosen for the concern, or a laser, usually does more than a HydraFacial, which brightens the look of the skin but does not clear pigment. Melasma needs a doctor's assessment first, as the wrong treatment can make it darker.
Will I peel after a HydraFacial?
Not usually. Most people see no flaking. Sensitive skin may look slightly flushed for up to an hour.
How long after a chemical peel can I have a HydraFacial?
Wait until peeling has finished and the skin feels normal, often about a week after a light peel and longer after a medium peel, and follow your doctor's advice.
Can Asian skin have chemical peels?
Yes, when the acid, strength and preparation are chosen with care, but the risk of dark marks is higher, especially with stronger peels or sun exposure. See a doctor experienced in treating skin like yours.
