HydraFacial vs microneedling: surface care or collagen remodelling, and which suits your skin

Both are offered as skin treatments in Singapore, but they work at different depths. HydraFacial cleanses, extracts and hydrates without breaking the skin; microneedling makes tiny controlled punctures to prompt collagen remodelling. Here is how to tell which one your skin needs.

Quick answer

  • HydraFacial is a non-medical facial that cleanses, exfoliates, lifts out pore congestion with suction and infuses hydrating serums in about 45 minutes, with little downtime. Microneedling makes many tiny, controlled punctures in the skin to prompt collagen remodelling.
  • Choose HydraFacial for blackheads, congestion, dullness and dehydration, or before an event. Microneedling, usually as a course, is aimed at shallow acne scars, enlarged-looking pores, rough texture and fine lines.
  • Microneedling usually means two to seven days of redness and a course of at least three sessions about a month apart, and it does not suit active acne. HydraFacial is repeated every four to six weeks to keep the effect.
  • At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall (City Hall MRT), HydraFacial Syndeo is performed by trained Aesthetic Therapists. RF microneedling is a medical treatment performed by Dr Sin Yong and priced at consultation.

The difference

How HydraFacial and microneedling differ

HydraFacial and microneedling are often compared because both promise smoother, healthier-looking skin, but they work in very different ways. HydraFacial is a branded form of hydradermabrasion: one handpiece with a single-use tip cleanses and gently peels the surface with a mild glycolic and salicylic acid blend, lifts blackheads and congestion out of the pores with vortex suction, and then infuses hydrating serums. The skin is not broken.

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses fine needles to make many tiny, controlled punctures at a set depth. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery describes it as using the body's wound-healing response to form new collagen and elastin. That is why it is used for texture and shallow scarring, and also why it has more downtime.

In short, HydraFacial works at the surface and in the pores, with a visible difference the same day. Small studies of hydradermabrasion show surface changes and better hydration, but none shows new collagen of the kind microneedling aims for. Microneedling works deeper and more slowly, over weeks and a course of sessions.

Which to choose

Which suits your skin concern

Start with the problem you want to change. If your skin feels congested, looks dull or feels tight from air-conditioning, HydraFacial is the more sensible first step: it clears and hydrates with little downtime, and you can judge the effect straight away.

If the concern is texture that a facial does not shift, such as shallow rolling acne scars or rough, uneven skin, microneedling or RF microneedling is the kind of treatment designed for it. A doctor should assess scars first, because deeper or pitted scars may need a different approach altogether.

If you have active, inflamed acne, microneedling is usually postponed until breakouts are under control. HydraFacial can help with blackheads and mild congestion, but painful or cystic acne needs a doctor.

  • Blackheads, congestion, oily skin: HydraFacial.
  • Dull, dehydrated skin, or an event this week: HydraFacial.
  • Shallow acne scars, rough texture: microneedling or RF microneedling, after a doctor's assessment.
  • Enlarged-looking pores: HydraFacial empties them for a while; microneedling works on the skin around them over a course.

Medical treatment

RF microneedling at SkinRev Lab

RF microneedling adds radiofrequency heat at the needle tips, so energy is delivered into the deeper layer of the skin. It is a medical treatment. At SkinRev Lab it is performed by Dr Sin Yong, MBBS (Singapore), MRCS (Edinburgh), MSc Practical Dermatology (Cardiff), SkinRev Lab's doctor, after an assessment, and it is priced at consultation.

Expect some redness, and possibly slight swelling, for a few days after each session, and plan the course with your doctor. Results vary between people, and no single treatment suits everyone.

Classic microneedling with a pen or roller, without radiofrequency, works on the same principle. Whatever the device, needles that reach the deeper skin carry risks of infection, pigment change and scarring if done poorly, so it belongs in a medical setting.

Combining them

Can you have both, and in what order?

Yes, many people use both, but not on the same day. A HydraFacial is a gentle way to clear and hydrate the skin in the weeks before a microneedling course starts, and between sessions once the skin has settled.

After microneedling, wait until redness and any flaking have fully settled before a HydraFacial, usually at least a week, and follow your doctor's advice for your skin. A HydraFacial is not done on freshly needled skin: the acid step and suction are not meant for broken skin.

Before either, tell us about isotretinoin, retinoids, recent sunburn, pregnancy and any recent laser or injectable treatments. If something is not right for your skin that day, we will say so.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Is HydraFacial better than microneedling?

Neither is better overall; they do different jobs. HydraFacial cleanses, extracts and hydrates the surface with little downtime. Microneedling prompts collagen remodelling for texture and shallow scars, with a few days of redness. Choose by the concern you want to treat.

Can HydraFacial replace microneedling for acne scars?

No. HydraFacial can make skin look smoother and clearer for a while, but it does not resurface pitted acne scars. Scars need a doctor's assessment; RF microneedling is one option, performed by Dr Sin Yong and priced at consultation.

How long after microneedling can I have a HydraFacial?

Wait until redness and flaking have fully settled, usually at least a week, and follow your doctor's advice. HydraFacial is not done on freshly needled or broken skin.

Does microneedling hurt more than HydraFacial?

Usually, yes. HydraFacial feels like a cool tingle and a wet, pulling sensation. Microneedling is often done after numbing cream, and the skin feels warm and tender afterwards. Sensations vary between people.

Is microneedling done at SkinRev Lab?

RF microneedling is available as a medical treatment performed by Dr Sin Yong, SkinRev Lab's doctor, after an assessment, and is priced at consultation. HydraFacial Syndeo is performed by our trained Aesthetic Therapists.

Which should I do before an event?

HydraFacial, booked two to five days ahead. Microneedling needs several days for redness to settle and works over weeks, so plan any course well before the date.
