LDM ultrasound explained: how the technology works

What Is LDM Ultrasound? A Gentle Facial Explained

In short

This explainer covers the science; for prices, suitability and booking see LDM treatment at SkinRev Lab.

LDM (Local Dynamic Micro-massage) is a facial treatment using ultrasound that switches rapidly between frequencies to create a gentle micro-massage in the skin, without heat. It is used to calm sensitive, redness-prone skin and support hydration. At SkinRev Lab, City Hall, SKINLDM takes about 30 minutes with a basic facial and costs S$288 before GST.

Key facts

  • Who performs it: An Aesthetic Therapist at SkinRev Lab.
  • Device: SKINLDM alternates between 1, 3 and 10 MHz; no heat, needles or acids.
  • Session: About 30 minutes, including a basic facial.
  • Downtime: Little to none; most people go straight back to their day.
  • Evidence: Small studies, such as 26 adults with rosacea or acne given four weekly sessions (Kim and colleagues, J Clin Med 2021).
  • Price: S$288 per session before GST; a course is planned at your assessment.

LDM (Local Dynamic Micro-massage) is a facial treatment that uses rapidly alternating ultrasound frequencies to massage the tissue rather than heat it, which is why it suits sensitive and redness-prone skin. At SkinRev Lab, SKINLDM with a basic facial costs S$288 before GST.

LDM ultrasound is a gentle facial technology that is still relatively little known in Singapore. Here is how it works and who it may suit.

What LDM stands for, and how it works

LDM stands for Local Dynamic Micro-massage. It is a skin treatment that uses ultrasound switching rapidly between different frequencies, so the tissue receives a fast-changing mechanical stimulus, a kind of micro-massage, rather than a steady dose of heat.

That is the key difference from most energy-based facials. Lasers, RF and HIFU work by heating tissue to trigger repair. LDM is designed to stimulate skin cells mechanically without that controlled heat injury, which is why it is usually offered to skin that reacts badly to heat.

Frequency matters because of depth. In general, lower ultrasound frequencies travel deeper and higher frequencies act closer to the surface, so alternating between them spreads the stimulus through different layers. SkinRev Lab describes SKINLDM as aimed at the upper and mid-dermis, rather than the deeper support layers that lifting treatments target.

Early LDM devices alternated between two frequencies, which is why you will see it described as dual-frequency ultrasound. Newer versions alternate between three. SKINLDM at SkinRev Lab alternates between 1, 3 and 10 MHz, and every session includes a basic facial.

What LDM is said to do, and what the evidence shows

The proposed mechanism is that rapidly changing ultrasound prompts skin cells to produce heat shock proteins, which are involved in repair, while calming inflammation and supporting hydration and collagen. Some of this comes from laboratory work: one study found 10 MHz ultrasound raised heat shock protein levels in cells grown in a dish. That is useful background, but it is not the same as showing an effect in human skin.

Clinical studies are small but consistent in direction. A 2021 study at a Seoul hospital gave 26 adults with rosacea or acne four weekly dual-frequency ultrasound sessions on both cheeks and reported less redness and less water loss through the skin at six weeks, with no serious side effects. There was no placebo group.

A 2025 retrospective study of 22 people with acne treated with triple-frequency LDM reported improvement on photographs graded by dermatologists who did not know the treatment details. One author worked for the device maker. A 2024 study in 48 people after nose surgery found LDM shortened swelling and bruising compared with ice packs.

Our honest summary: the early evidence is encouraging for calming and hydrating reactive skin, but the studies are small and short, and large randomised trials are still missing. Individual results vary.

LDM compared with HIFU and other ultrasound treatments

All of these use ultrasound, but they do very different jobs. HIFU and focused ultrasound concentrate energy at a set depth to heat and tighten support layers. LDM spreads a gentle, changing stimulus through the skin to calm it. Choosing between them depends on whether your main problem is skin condition or sagging.

Who an LDM facial suits, and who should look elsewhere

LDM makes most sense when your skin needs calming before it needs anything else. It is not a lifting treatment and not a pigment treatment, and booking it for those goals usually leads to disappointment.

  • Suits: sensitive, reactive or redness-prone skin that stings, flushes or feels hot.
  • Suits: people told they cannot have laser, HIFU or RF because their skin is too sensitive.
  • Suits: dehydrated skin and fine, crepey lines, and skin recovering from over-exfoliation.
  • Suits: rosacea-prone or breakout-prone skin as an add-on, alongside whatever your doctor has prescribed.
  • For sagging and jowls, focused ultrasound or HIFU fits better.
  • Melasma, deep pigment and visible thread veins need a doctor's assessment instead.
  • See a doctor first for acne-like bumps from rosacea, persistent redness, or a rash that is spreading or weeping.
  • Tell your Aesthetic Therapist if you are pregnant or have any medical condition or implant, so suitability can be checked.

What a SKINLDM session is like at SkinRev Lab

A SKINLDM session takes about 30 minutes, including a basic facial: cleanse and preparation alongside the LDM treatment. Most clients describe it as a warm, relaxing facial massage. There are no needles, no light energy and nothing designed to peel the skin.

Because it does not rely on heat, it can be done while skin is actively red or irritated, which is when many other treatments have to wait. Most clients go straight back to work or plans, and make-up can go on afterwards. Skin often feels more hydrated after a session; calmer, steadier skin builds across a course.

Sessions are performed by our Aesthetic Therapists at SkinRev Lab, #B1-28 CityLink Mall, 1 Raffles Link, in the underground link between City Hall and Esplanade MRT. We are open daily, 11am to 8pm. Bring a list of the skincare you use.

Is LDM safe, and are there side effects?

In the published studies, LDM was well tolerated and no serious side effects were reported. That fits how it works: there is no needle, no deliberate heat injury and nothing designed to break or peel the skin. The trade-off is that its effects are gentle and build gradually.

Ultrasound is not absorbed by skin pigment the way laser light is, so skin tone is not the limiting factor it can be with some lasers. That makes LDM a reasonable option for medium and darker skin that pigments easily after irritation.

Safety still depends on the right person in the chair. Open wounds, active infection, a spreading rash or skin that might be something more serious should be seen by a doctor first. Your Aesthetic Therapist asks about your medical history, medication and recent treatments at your assessment, and will tell you if SKINLDM is not the right choice.

How often, and what LDM costs

SKINLDM is S$288 per session before GST, including the basic facial.

Reactive skin responds to consistency rather than intensity, so a course is usually more useful than a single visit. For reference only, the 2021 rosacea and acne study used one session a week for four weeks. That was a study protocol, not a promise: your Aesthetic Therapist suggests a realistic rhythm at your assessment, and individual results vary.

Keep your home routine simple during a course. Gentle cleansing, a plain moisturiser and daily sunscreen let you see what the sessions are doing, rather than guessing whether a new serum helped or hurt.

Combining LDM with other treatments

LDM often fits as the calming step in a wider plan. If congestion is your main concern but your skin reddens easily, calming it first with SKINLDM and leaving extraction for later is usually the sensible order.

For glass skin goals, LDM can sit alongside a HydraFacial or a Rejuran PDRN Facial on separate visits. For persistent redness, visible vessels or rosacea bumps, medical treatment comes first: Dr Sin Yong at SkinRev Lab or IN Eternity Clinic assesses for prescription care or laser, and LDM can then help keep the skin comfortable between reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

LDM treatment uses Local Dynamic Micro-massage, ultrasound that switches rapidly between frequencies to create a gentle micro-massage in the skin instead of heat. It is mainly used to calm sensitive, red or reactive skin and support hydration. At SkinRev Lab it is offered as SKINLDM, about 30 minutes with a basic facial, at S$288 before GST.

No. Both use ultrasound, but HIFU focuses energy to heat tiny points at fixed depths to tighten and lift, and is a medical treatment performed by a doctor. LDM spreads a rapidly changing, non-heating stimulus through the skin to calm and hydrate it. LDM is not a lifting treatment, and HIFU is not designed for sensitive skin.

Most clients describe it as comfortable, like a warm, relaxing facial massage. There are no needles and nothing designed to peel the skin. If anything feels too warm or uncomfortable, tell your Aesthetic Therapist so the session can be adjusted.

At SkinRev Lab, SKINLDM is S$288 per session before GST, including a basic facial. A course is usually more useful than one session; your Aesthetic Therapist suggests a rhythm at your assessment, and nothing is booked without you agreeing to it.

Small studies have reported less redness in acne and rosacea and improvement in acne on photographs after LDM, but the studies are small and one involved the device maker. LDM can be a calming add-on for breakout-prone skin. It does not replace acne medication, and persistent or scarring acne should be seen by a doctor.

SKINLDM is designed for sensitive, rosacea-prone skin and can be done during a flare, and the published studies reported no serious side effects. It can make rosacea-prone skin more comfortable but does not close dilated vessels or treat rosacea bumps. Continue any treatment your doctor has prescribed.

Many clients notice their skin feels more hydrated after a session. Calmer, less reactive skin tends to build gradually across a course, and how quickly depends on your starting point and routine. Results vary from person to person. If your skin is not settling, or is getting worse, your Aesthetic Therapist will review the plan with you.

SKINLDM is a gentle ultrasound facial well suited to many sensitive, redness-prone skin types. It is designed to calm the skin and support rejuvenation, with little to no downtime.

It can help. SKINLDM supports a calmer, more even complexion and can be paired with pigmentation and melasma protocols.

LDM, short for local dynamic micro-massage, uses ultrasound that switches rapidly between frequencies, so the tissue receives a fast-changing mechanical stimulus rather than a steady dose of heat. That is why it feels gentle and suits sensitive, redness-prone skin.

It can be if your skin is sensitive, red or reactive and other facials have felt too harsh, because LDM calms the skin without heat, needles or acids. It is not a lifting or pigment treatment. At SkinRev Lab a session is S$288 before GST, and a short course is usually more useful than a single visit.

Side effects are usually minimal. Most people have little visible reaction and go straight back to their day, and a small study of dual-frequency ultrasound in rosacea and acne reported no serious adverse effects (Kim and colleagues, 2021). Tell your therapist about any skin condition or recent procedure before the session.

For calming and hydration, small studies are encouraging: 26 adults with rosacea or acne had less redness and less water loss from the skin after four weekly sessions (Kim and colleagues, 2021). The studies are small and had no placebo group, so expect gradual, modest change rather than a dramatic one.
