Buccal massage in Singapore: what it is, what it can and cannot do, and safer alternatives
Buccal massage is an intraoral facial massage: with gloved hands, a therapist works the cheek and jaw muscles from inside the mouth. It can ease jaw tension and puffiness for a while, but no controlled trials show it reshapes the face. SkinRev Lab does not offer it; facial massage comes within the Rejuran PDRN Facial instead.

Quick answer
- In buccal massage, gloved fingers are placed inside the mouth against the inner cheek and work the buccinator and masseter muscles against the hand outside. It is marketed for a sculpted cheek, a slimmer lower face and jaw release.
- There are no controlled trials of buccal massage for face shape. The nearest research is on intraoral therapy for jaw pain, where trained treatment improved pain and mouth opening.
- Massage cannot remove the buccal fat pad, shrink a large masseter muscle for good or lift ligaments. Any slimmer look is mostly reduced puffiness and relaxed muscle, and it fades.
- SkinRev Lab does not offer buccal massage. Hands-on facial massage comes within the Rejuran PDRN Facial; for face slimming, Dr Sin Yong assesses the cause at consultation.
Key facts
Buccal massage at a glance
- What it is: an intraoral facial massage of the cheek and jaw muscles, done with gloved hands.

- What it cannot do: remove buccal fat, permanently slim a wide jaw or lift sagging skin.
- Evidence: no controlled trials for facial shape; some for jaw pain with trained practitioners.
- Safety: gloves, short nails and pressure that is never painful.
- At SkinRev Lab: not offered; facial massage comes within the Rejuran PDRN Facial.
Side by side
Buccal massage compared with other facial massage
Each type of facial massage does a different job. None changes face shape permanently.
| Buccal (intraoral) | Sculpting massage | Lymphatic drainage | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it is done | Gloved fingers inside the mouth work against the hand outside | Firmer kneading over cheeks, jaw and temples | Very light, slow strokes towards the neck |
| Usually aimed at | Jaw tension, a sculpted cheek look | Muscle tension, a fresher look | Puffiness and fluid retention |
| What to expect | Tender for a day for some people | Relaxed jaw, temporary definition | A less puffy look for hours |
| Evidence | None for contour; some for jaw pain | Small studies without control groups | Small studies on swelling |
| At SkinRev Lab | Not offered | Within the Rejuran PDRN Facial; ask which techniques | Facial technique within the Rejuran PDRN Facial |
The evidence
What buccal massage can and cannot do
The closest research is not cosmetic. In a randomised trial of 93 adults with chronic muscular jaw pain, intraoral myofascial therapy twice a week for five weeks improved pain and mouth opening compared with a wait-list group at six months and one year. That supports jaw-tension relief in trained hands, not facial contouring.
A 45-minute facial massage reduced anxiety and negative mood in 32 healthy women in another small study. The relaxation is real; the sculpting claims are bigger than the data.
The buccal fat pad sits deep in the cheek between the chewing muscles, and massage cannot move or remove it. A square lower face is often a large masseter muscle, which massage will not shrink for good.
Who should avoid it
Who this is not suitable for
Intraoral massage carries extra hygiene and jaw considerations. Check with a dentist or doctor first in these situations.
- Jaw pain, clicking or locking.
- Recent dental work, braces, implants or mouth ulcers.
- Recent fillers, threads, wrinkle-relaxing injections or energy treatments: ask the treating doctor how long to wait.
- Active acne, cold sores, rosacea or eczema flares, sunburn or broken skin on the face.
- Easy bruising or blood-thinning medicine: light techniques only, after checking with your doctor.
- New facial swelling that is painful, one-sided, hot or comes with fever: see a doctor, not a therapist.
At SkinRev Lab
What SkinRev Lab offers instead
SkinRev Lab, at #B1-28 CityLink Mall, 1 Raffles Link, linked underground to City Hall and Esplanade MRT, open daily 11am to 8pm, does not offer buccal massage. Hands-on facial massage comes within the Rejuran PDRN Facial, where longer sessions leave time for steps such as massage; ask your Aesthetic Therapist which techniques your session includes. SKINLDM offers a massage-like ultrasound facial without hands-on pressure.
If your goal is a slimmer lower face, the cause decides the route: a large masseter muscle, fat under the chin or early sagging each have their own option. Dr Sin Yong, MBBS (Singapore), MRCS (Edinburgh), MSc Practical Dermatology (Cardiff), assesses this at consultation, and doctor-led treatment is priced then. WhatsApp +65 8266 9585.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
What is buccal massage?
An intraoral facial massage in which gloved fingers inside the mouth work the cheek and jaw muscles against a hand outside the face.
Does buccal massage slim the face?
Any slimmer look afterwards is mostly reduced puffiness and relaxed muscle, and it fades. There are no controlled trials showing lasting change in face shape.
Can buccal massage remove buccal fat?
No. The buccal fat pad sits deep in the cheek, and massage cannot move or remove it.
Is buccal massage safe?
In trained hands with gloves and gentle pressure it is generally low risk, but it should never be painful. People with jaw problems, recent dental work or recent facial injections should check first.
Does buccal massage help jaw tension?
It may. A trial of intraoral therapy for chronic jaw pain found improvement in pain and mouth opening, though that was a medical setting with trained practitioners.
Does SkinRev Lab offer buccal massage?
No. Facial massage at SkinRev Lab comes within the Rejuran PDRN Facial, and SKINLDM is a massage-like ultrasound facial.
How long should I wait after fillers before buccal massage?
Ask the doctor who treated you. Firm or intraoral massage soon after fillers, threads or injections can be a problem.
What works better than massage for a wide jaw?
If the cause is a large masseter muscle, a doctor can assess you for jaw-slimming injections. Fat and sagging have their own options.
