Facial massage lymphatic, sculpting and buccal, and what each can really do
From gentle lymphatic drainage to buccal massage done inside the mouth, facial massage is everywhere in Singapore. Here is how the main types differ, what the evidence supports, where the risks are, and when a different treatment suits your goal better.
Quick answer
- Facial massage usually means one of three things: lymphatic drainage, a light, rhythmic technique aimed at puffiness; sculpting massage, firmer kneading of the cheek, jaw and temple muscles; and buccal massage, an intraoral technique where gloved fingers work the cheek and jaw muscles from inside the mouth. All three can relax the face and reduce puffiness for a while; none permanently reshapes it.
- The evidence is small. A 45-minute facial massage reduced anxiety and negative mood in 32 women; a CT study of five people suggested two weeks of self-massage shifted cheek tissue by a few millimetres; and manual lymph drainage reduced facial swelling after wisdom tooth surgery in 10 patients. There are no controlled trials of buccal massage for face shape.
- Buccal massage works inside the mouth, so gloves and hygiene matter, pressure should never be painful, and anyone with jaw pain, clicking or locking, recent dental work, mouth ulcers or recent fillers should check with a dentist or doctor first. A wide jaw from a large masseter muscle, or a full face from fat, will not change permanently with massage.
- SkinRev Lab does not offer buccal massage. Hands-on facial massage there is part of the Rejuran® PDRN Facial: the Singapore range comes with muscle relaxation, a relaxing technique or MLD lymphatic drainage (S$128 to S$188), and the Oriental range with pressure-point massage or whole-face guasha (S$148 to S$208). SKINLDM (S$288, first visit S$68) and HydraFacial Syndeo (S$288 to S$438) are also offered. All before GST.
Types
The main types of facial massage
| Type | How it is done | Usually aimed at | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lymphatic drainage | Very light, slow, rhythmic strokes towards the neck and collarbones | Morning puffiness, fluid retention, relaxation | A less puffy look for hours; very gentle |
| Sculpting or contouring | Firmer kneading, pressing and lifting strokes over cheeks, jaw and temples | Muscle tension, a fresher, more defined look | Relaxed jaw, temporary definition; can feel intense |
| Buccal (intraoral) | Gloved fingers inside the mouth work the cheek and jaw muscles against fingers outside | Jaw tension, a sculpted cheek look | Tender afterwards for some; cosmetic effect unproven |
| Tool massage | Gua sha stones or rollers on oiled skin | De-puffing, glow, self-care | Short-lived; low risk if gentle |
| Device-based massage | Ultrasound or other energy creating micro-movement within the skin | Calming sensitive skin | Depends on the device; no hands-on pressure |
Lymphatic
Lymphatic drainage facial massage
Lymph is the clear fluid that collects in the tissues and drains back through a network of vessels and nodes. In the face, most of it drains towards nodes under the jaw, in front of the ears and down the neck. Lymphatic drainage massage uses very light, slow strokes that follow those routes, because firm pressure squashes the small vessels rather than helping them.
There is reasonable logic behind it and some medical evidence in other settings. In a small study of 10 patients after wisdom tooth removal, the side of the face treated with manual lymph drainage swelled less than the untreated side. For everyday puffiness after a late night or a salty meal, the effect is likely to be modest and to last hours rather than days.
Lymphoedema, swelling after cancer treatment or surgery, and facial swelling with pain or fever are medical problems. They need a doctor and, where appropriate, a trained lymphoedema therapist, not a beauty massage.
Sculpting
Sculpting and contouring massage
Sculpting massage uses firmer pressure: kneading the masseter muscle at the angle of the jaw, pressing along the cheekbones and temples, and lifting strokes along the jawline. Many people find it relieves the tight, tired feeling of clenching and long screen hours, and the face looks more awake afterwards.
The evidence on shape is limited. In a pilot CT study of five adults who self-massaged twice daily for two weeks, the cheek soft tissue was measured as shifting slightly upward and the cheek thinning by under 1%; some co-authors were from a cosmetics company, and there was no control group. In a 2025 trial, eight weeks of near-daily gua sha or roller massage reduced facial measurements by about 2 to 3 mm, again with no untreated group.
Separately, a 45-minute facial massage reduced anxiety and negative mood scores in 32 healthy women. That relaxation effect is real and worth having, even if the sculpting claims are bigger than the data.
Buccal massage
Buccal massage: what it is and what it can do
Buccal massage is an intraoral technique. With gloved hands, the therapist places fingers inside the mouth, against the inner cheek, and works the buccinator and masseter muscles between the fingers inside and the hand outside. It is often marketed for a more sculpted cheek, a slimmer lower face and jaw release.
There are no controlled trials of buccal massage for facial shape. The closest research is on intraoral myofascial therapy for jaw pain: in a randomised trial of 93 adults with chronic muscular jaw pain, treatment twice a week for five weeks by trained practitioners improved pain and mouth opening compared with a wait-list group at six months and one year. That supports relief of jaw tension in trained hands, not cosmetic contouring.
Massage cannot move or remove the buccal fat pad, shrink a large masseter muscle for good, or lift ligaments. Any slimmer look afterwards is mostly reduced puffiness and relaxed muscle, and it fades. Some people feel tender or slightly swollen for a day.
Can and can't
What facial massage can and cannot do
If a massage leaves you feeling better and your face looking fresher for the evening, it has done its job. If you are paying for a permanent change in shape, the evidence is not there.
| Can do | Cannot do |
|---|---|
| Reduce puffiness for a few hours | Remove facial fat or a double chin |
| Relax tight jaw, temple and forehead muscles | Permanently shrink a large masseter muscle |
| Bring a temporary glow by raising blood flow | Lift sagging skin or tighten loose ligaments |
| Help you unwind and lower stress | Build collagen or reverse ageing |
| Support, not replace, care for jaw pain | Treat acne, rosacea or melasma |
Safety
Safety: who should skip it, and what good practice looks like
- For buccal massage, the therapist should wash hands, wear fresh gloves and keep nails short; ask before you start.
- Pressure should never be painful. Stop if you feel sharp pain, numbness, tingling or jaw locking.
- If you have jaw pain, clicking or locking, recent dental work, braces, implants or mouth ulcers, see a dentist before any intraoral massage.
- After fillers, threads, wrinkle-relaxing injections or energy treatments, ask the doctor who treated you how long to wait before firm or intraoral massage.
- Skip firm massage over active acne, cold sores, rosacea or eczema flares, sunburn or broken skin.
- Keep pressure on the front and sides of the neck very light.
- If you bruise easily or take blood-thinning medicine, choose light techniques only and check with your doctor.
- New facial swelling that is painful, one-sided, hot or comes with fever needs a doctor, not a massage.

In-centre options
Facial massage options at SkinRev Lab
SkinRev Lab does not offer buccal massage. Hands-on facial massage is part of the Rejuran® PDRN Facial, a needle-free c-PDRN facial. The Singapore range comes with muscle relaxation, a relaxing technique or MLD lymphatic drainage: Essential 60 minutes S$128, Signature 75 minutes S$158, Professional 90 minutes S$188. The Oriental range comes with pressure-point massage or whole-face guasha: Essential 60 minutes S$148, Signature 75 minutes S$178, Professional 90 minutes S$208. Longer tiers add techniques such as clogged-pore care, shoulder massage and extraction, not a stronger active. All before GST.
For a calming, massage-like facial without hands-on pressure, SKINLDM uses LDM (local dynamic micro-massage) ultrasound, with rapidly alternating frequencies that create a gentle micro-massage within the skin rather than heat. Each session takes about 30 minutes, including a basic facial, and suits sensitive, reactive and redness-prone skin. Published research on LDM is limited, so think of it as a calming facial, not a contouring one. S$288 per session before GST; first visit S$68.
HydraFacial Syndeo cleanses and gently peels, lifts out blackheads with vortex suction and infuses serum in about 45 minutes: Signature S$288, Deluxe S$388 and Platinum S$438 before GST, with a first-timer rate on every tier given at the counter. HydraFacial's own menu describes its Platinum tier as adding a lymphatic drainage step; at SkinRev Lab, your therapist confirms each step of your session before you start.
SkinRev Lab's Medical Adviser, Dr Sin Yong, trains the team hands-on on the centre's treatment machines. Your first session starts with a short skin assessment.
Bigger goals
When you need more than a massage
Work out what is really behind the look you want to change. A square lower face is often a large masseter muscle, which a doctor can assess for jaw-slimming injections. Sagging along the jaw responds to energy-based lifting such as SKINLIFT ultrasound lifting at SkinRev Lab. Fullness from fat needs a body-composition or fat-reduction approach, not massage.
Medical options are assessed and performed by Dr Sin Yong. He performs VF Lift, his Volnewmer monopolar radiofrequency vertical-lift protocol, at SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, and injectable treatments at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT. Medical treatments are priced at consultation. Jaw pain, clicking or locking should be seen by a dentist or doctor first.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
Does facial massage really slim the face?
Not permanently. Massage can reduce puffiness and relax the jaw muscles, so the face may look slimmer for a few hours. It does not remove fat, shrink a large masseter muscle for good or tighten loose skin.
What is buccal massage?
Buccal massage is an intraoral facial massage. A therapist wearing gloves works the cheek and jaw muscles with fingers inside the mouth and a hand outside. It is marketed for sculpting and jaw release; the sculpting claims are not backed by controlled studies.
Does buccal massage work?
It can relieve jaw tension. A randomised trial found intraoral muscle therapy by trained practitioners helped chronic muscular jaw pain. There is no good evidence that it changes face shape, lifts the cheeks or slims the jaw for longer than a short while.
Is buccal massage safe?
Generally, when done gently by a trained person with gloves and good hygiene. Avoid it with jaw clicking or locking, recent dental work, braces, implants, mouth ulcers or recent fillers unless your dentist or doctor agrees. It should never be painful.
Does lymphatic drainage facial massage reduce puffiness?
It may help a little and for a few hours. Light lymphatic strokes reduced facial swelling after wisdom tooth surgery in a small study. Everyday puffiness from salt, alcohol or poor sleep usually settles by itself; massage can speed that slightly.
How often should I get a facial massage?
There is no set rule. Gentle self-massage for five to ten minutes can be done daily. For professional massage, let comfort and budget decide; more frequent, firmer massage is not more effective and raises the risk of irritation.
Can facial massage reduce a double chin?
No. A double chin is usually fat, loose skin or the shape of the jaw and neck. Massage may reduce puffiness under the chin briefly but does not change fat or skin laxity.
Can I have a facial massage after fillers?
Ask the doctor who did your filler. Firm and intraoral massage over freshly treated areas is usually avoided for a period, and the timing depends on the product and area.
Does SkinRev Lab offer buccal massage or facial massage?
SkinRev Lab does not offer buccal massage. Facial massage is part of the Rejuran® PDRN Facial: the Singapore range includes an MLD lymphatic drainage option (S$128 to S$188) and the Oriental range pressure-point massage or whole-face guasha (S$148 to S$208). SKINLDM (S$288, first visit S$68) and HydraFacial Syndeo (S$288 to S$438) are also offered, all before GST, at CityLink Mall.
