Lip embroidery vs lip blush: two names, one service, and the styles that do differ

In Singapore, lip embroidery and lip blush are two names for the same cosmetic tattoo: soft pigment worked through the lip to even out tone and clarify the border. What differs is the style, from a sheer tint to stronger colour. At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, our Permanent Makeup Artist does it in private appointments, priced at consultation.

Quick answer

  • Lip embroidery, lip blush and lip tattoo usually describe the same procedure: cosmetic tattooing that adds colour through the lip with a fine needle. Lip embroidery is Singapore's everyday word; lip blush describes the soft, sheer look.
  • The real differences are style and shade: a sheer full-lip tint, a stronger lipstick-like colour, or a correcting approach for dark lips, sometimes called lip neutralisation.
  • Colour looks two to three tones deeper at first and settles over two to four weeks. Results usually last one to three years before a refresh, and a review appointment evens out patchy areas.
  • At SkinRev Lab, Signature Lip Blush is priced at consultation, with shade selection and design included. It is a beauty service, not a medical procedure, and it is not a lip-lightening treatment.

The terms

What each name usually means

Studios use these words loosely, so ask what style you are being offered and see healed results, not only fresh ones.

Healing

What healing looks like, and why it looks wrong at first

Healing varies from person to person. Follow the aftercare you are given on the day.

  • Days 1 to 3: colour looks two to three tones deeper than the final result; lips may feel swollen, tight or tender.
  • Days 3 to 7: light flaking or peeling; colour can look patchy or faded underneath while new skin forms.
  • Weeks 2 to 4: colour gradually returns and settles to its healed tone.
  • Once healed: a review appointment, when density can be evened out if it settled unevenly.
  • Lips renew faster than brow skin, so colour fades sooner and more unevenly than on brows. No lip tattoo is truly permanent.

Risks

Side effects worth knowing

Swelling, tenderness and dryness for a few days are common. Lip work can trigger a cold sore in people who are prone, which is why it is asked about first; your doctor can advise on preventive medicine beforehand.

Permanent makeup is a type of tattoo. The US FDA lists infection, allergic reaction, MRI complications and difficulty with removal among tattoo risks, and published reviews describe skin infections linked to contaminated tattoo inks. Single-use needles and good hygiene matter. See a doctor promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus or fever.

Who should wait

Who this is not suitable for

Lip blush is postponed, or a different route suggested, in these situations.

  • An active cold sore, lip infection or broken skin on the lips.
  • Dark lips that changed recently, are patchy or spreading: see a doctor first.
  • Wanting lighter lips: lip blush evens tone; it is not a bleaching or lightening treatment.
  • Wanting more volume: that is lip filler, a medical treatment by a doctor.
  • Recent lip filler: wait as advised by your doctor before tattooing.
  • A known allergy to tattoo pigments, or a past reaction to a tattoo.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

What is the difference between lip embroidery and lip blush?

Usually none: both describe cosmetic tattooing that adds colour through the lip. Lip blush describes the soft, sheer style; lip embroidery is the everyday term in Singapore.

How much should lip blushing cost?

Prices vary widely, so compare what is included: the review appointment, numbing, who does the work and single-use needles. At SkinRev Lab, Signature Lip Blush is priced at consultation.

Is lip blush actually worth it?

It suits people with uneven, shadowed or pale lip colour who want a natural tint without daily lipstick. It is less suitable if you want lighter lips or more volume.

How long does lip blush last?

Usually one to three years before a refresh. Lips renew faster than brow skin, so colour fades sooner and more unevenly.

Does lip embroidery hurt?

Topical numbing is used throughout, but most people find lip work more intense than brow work.

Can lip blush lighten dark lips?

It is not a lightening treatment. A warmer correcting tone may even out dark or cool-toned lips over more than one session; new or spreading darkening should be checked by a doctor first.

Why does lip blush look so dark after the procedure?

Colour looks two to three tones deeper at first and settles over two to four weeks as the lips heal.

Is lip embroidery a medical procedure in Singapore?

No. Cosmetic tattooing is a beauty service, so it is done by trained artists. A medical problem afterwards, such as a spreading infection, should go to a doctor.
