Microblading vs Eyebrow Embroidery what the brow terms mean in Singapore

In Singapore, eyebrow embroidery is the umbrella term. Microblading, machine hair strokes, misty or powder brows and hybrid brows are ways of doing it. Here is how they differ, and which tends to suit your skin.

Quick answer

  • Eyebrow embroidery is the local umbrella term for semi-permanent brow tattooing. Microblading is one technique within it: a handheld blade of fine needles used to draw hair strokes by hand.
  • Machine embroidery uses a small tattoo device with a needle and can make strokes or soft shading. Powder, misty or ombré brows are shaded finishes; hybrid brows combine strokes with shading.
  • Oily skin tends to blur fine strokes, so misty or hybrid finishes usually hold their look longer. Normal to dry skin with some brow hair suits hair strokes.
  • SkinRev Lab offers Misty Brows S$698, Natural Hair Stroke S$798 and Signature Hybrid Brows S$1,388, before GST, with consultation and design included.

Terminology

Why Singapore says embroidery

Ask for eyebrow embroidery in Singapore and you are asking for semi-permanent brow tattooing in general. It is the term most people search, and studios use it as an umbrella. Microblading, nano brows, powder brows, ombré brows, misty brows and hybrid brows describe tools or finishes within it rather than different services. You will also see brow embroidery, eyebrow tattoo and microblading brows used for the same thing.

All of them are cosmetic tattooing: pigment is placed in the upper layers of the skin with a needle, so there is a healing period and the result fades gradually rather than lasting forever. Semi-permanent is the honest description.

The technique matters less than the mapping. Where the head, arch and tail sit relative to your bone structure and your own hair growth decides whether brows look right. A good tool cannot rescue a wrong shape.

Microblading

Microblading: hair strokes drawn by hand

Microblading uses a handheld pen fitted with a blade made of tiny needles. The artist draws fine, hair-like strokes by hand, making small nicks that deposit pigment at a relatively superficial depth. Done well, it gives crisp individual strokes that read as natural hair up close.

It tends to suit normal to dry skin, mild to moderately sparse brows, and people who want a natural hair look. A 2025 dermatology review describes very oily skin as a poor candidate, because pigment fades quickly where oil glands are very active, and notes that results are temporary and retouches are needed.

Machine embroidery

Machine embroidery: strokes or shading by device

Machine work uses a small handheld tattoo device that moves a fine needle in and out rapidly. It can be used to draw hair strokes, sometimes marketed as nano brows, or to build up soft shading gradually.

Because the shading can be layered little by little, machine work is how powder and misty finishes are usually made. Whether strokes are drawn with a blade or a machine, the finished look depends more on the artist's mapping and hand than on the tool.

Misty and hybrid

Misty powder brows and hybrid brows

Powder, misty or ombré brows have no individual strokes. Pigment is shaded in to give a soft, powdered look, similar to brows lightly filled in with pencil or powder. Ombré versions are usually lighter at the front and deeper towards the tail.

With no fine lines to blur, a shaded finish usually holds its look longer on oily skin. It also suits people who already fill in their brows every day and simply want to stop.

Hybrid or combination brows layer hair strokes over soft shading. The strokes add realism and the shading adds depth, which helps most where natural brow hair is sparse.

Skin and brows

Choosing by skin type and brow

  • Oily skin or open pores in the brow area: a misty finish usually holds its look longest. If you want strokes anyway, a hybrid holds better than strokes alone.
  • Normal to dry skin with some brow hair: hair strokes work alongside your own hairs and read most naturally up close.
  • Very sparse brows, or little hair to build from: hybrid gives the most definition and holds its shape well.
  • Old brow tattooing: often workable, but it depends on how dark, how saturated and what colour the old pigment has faded to. Bring it in or send a clear photo before booking.
  • Brows thinning for no obvious reason, or a skin condition in the brow area such as eczema, psoriasis or seborrhoeic dermatitis: see a doctor first. Tattooing over an active skin condition or unexplained hair loss is not the answer.

At SkinRev Lab

How SkinRev Lab's three styles map on

SkinRev Lab, our non-invasive aesthetic centre at CityLink Mall, offers three brow finishes, with consultation, shaping and design included in the price. The shape is mapped to your bone structure and growth pattern, drawn on your face and approved by you before any pigment is placed. If it is not right, it is redrawn.

All prices are before GST. Which finish suits you is decided in person, after our specialist has seen your brows and skin, and it is often not the most expensive one. We also offer Signature Eyeliner (S$598) and Signature Lip Blush (S$1,388).

  • Misty Brows, S$698: the powder or misty finish. Soft, like lightly filled-in brows, and the finish that holds up well on oilier skin.
  • Natural Hair Stroke, S$798: individual strokes following your own hair direction. It covers the same hair-stroke result people mean by microblading. If you have a preference between a manual blade and a machine, raise it at consultation.
  • Signature Hybrid Brows, S$1,388: hair strokes layered with soft shading, the option most often chosen when there is little natural hair to build from.

Longevity and healing

How long brows last, and what healing looks like

How long any brow finish lasts varies with skin type, sun exposure, the pigment used and how your body processes it. Oily skin and regular sun both shorten it. At SkinRev Lab, brows typically hold for one to three years before a refresh is wanted, fading gradually rather than disappearing at a fixed point. A 2025 review describes microblading as lasting up to about three years depending on the pigment, with retouches needed.

Expect the colour to look deeper and sharper for the first several days, then soften as it settles. That is normal and worth knowing in advance. A review once healing is complete lets any patch that settled unevenly be refined.

Before your appointment, avoid alcohol and caffeine on the day, avoid blood-thinning medication where your doctor permits, skip brow waxing or tinting in the week before, and come without brow makeup so the mapping starts from your real shape.

Risks

What to know about safety

Dermatology reviews describe the complications of permanent makeup as infectious, allergic and inflammatory, and note they may be more common when hygiene and aftercare are not followed. Reported issues with microblading include asymmetry, colour shifts, allergic reactions and, rarely, infection. In people with psoriasis, vitiligo or lichen planus, lesions can appear where the skin has been injured.

Whichever technique you choose, ask the studio how it handles hygiene, whether you can see healed work rather than fresh photos, and whether the shape is agreed with you before pigment goes in.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Is eyebrow embroidery the same as microblading?

They overlap. In Singapore, eyebrow embroidery is the umbrella term for semi-permanent brow tattooing. Microblading is one technique within it, using a handheld blade to draw hair strokes by hand.

Which is better for oily skin, microblading or misty brows?

Misty brows usually hold their look longer on oily skin, because there are no fine strokes to blur. If you want strokes anyway, a hybrid tends to hold better than strokes alone.

How much is eyebrow embroidery at SkinRev Lab?

Misty Brows S$698, Natural Hair Stroke S$798 and Signature Hybrid Brows S$1,388, before GST. Consultation, shaping and design are included.

Does SkinRev Lab do microblading?

Our Natural Hair Stroke covers the same hair-stroke result that microblading describes. If you prefer a particular tool, raise it at consultation.

How long does microblading last?

It varies with skin type, sun exposure and pigment. A 2025 review describes it as lasting up to about three years, with retouches needed. Brows at SkinRev Lab typically hold for one to three years before a refresh is wanted.

What is the difference between powder, ombré and misty brows?

Mostly the name. All three are soft shaded finishes without individual strokes. Ombré usually means the shading is lighter at the front and deeper towards the tail.

Does brow embroidery hurt?

It is generally well tolerated. Pigment is placed with a fine needle, so there is sensation, usually described as scratching or pressure, and numbing is applied to keep you comfortable.

Can I have it over old brow tattooing?

Often, but it depends on how dark and what colour the existing work has faded to. Bring it in or send a clear photo before booking, and we will tell you honestly whether it is workable.
