Lip blush vs lip filler in Singapore colour or volume, and how to choose

Lip blush and lip filler are often compared, but they change different things. One adds soft colour to the lip; the other adds volume and shape, and is a medical procedure.

Quick answer

  • Lip blush and lip filler solve different problems. Lip blush is semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing that adds soft colour and evens out lip tone; lip filler is a hyaluronic acid (HA) gel injected by a doctor to add volume and shape.
  • Lip blush usually lasts one to three years and fades gradually. HA lip filler is commonly visible for around six to twelve months and can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed.
  • The main risks differ: lip blush can trigger cold sores in people who are prone and can heal unevenly, while filler carries the rare but serious risk of vascular occlusion, where gel blocks a blood vessel.
  • At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, Signature Lip Blush is priced at consultation. Dermal fillers are a medical treatment performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation; for lips specifically, ask the clinic.

The difference

Colour versus volume

Lip blush, also called lip embroidery, is cosmetic tattooing. Soft pigment is worked through the whole lip with a fine needle to even out tone, clarify the border and give a little more definition. It changes colour, not size.

Lip filler is an injection of hyaluronic acid gel into the lip. It adds volume, projection and shape, and can balance lips that are uneven in size. It changes size and shape, not colour. In Singapore it is a medical procedure, done by a doctor.

So the first question is simple: are you unhappy with how your lips look in colour, or in size and shape? The answer usually points to one treatment, and sometimes to both.

Healing

What healing looks like for each

Lip blush: for the first one to three days the colour looks two to three tones deeper than the final result, and the lips may feel swollen, tight or tender. Between days three and seven there is light flaking, and the colour can look patchy underneath. Over weeks two to four it settles to its healed tone. A review appointment once healing is complete lets density be evened out if needed.

Lip filler: swelling, tenderness and sometimes bruising are common for several days, and lips can look fuller than the final result while they are swollen. The shape is judged once swelling has settled, usually at a review a few weeks later. Avoid pressing or massaging the lips, saunas and heavy exercise for a day or two, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Longevity

How long lip blush and lip filler last

Lip blush typically lasts one to three years before a refresh is wanted. Lips renew faster than brow skin, so colour fades sooner and less evenly than on brows. It fades gradually rather than ending abruptly, and no lip tattoo is truly permanent.

For HA lip filler, a meta-analysis of lip augmentation studies found that 91% of people still had fuller lips at two months, 74% at six months and 46% at twelve months. Lips move constantly, which is one reason filler here tends to be at the shorter end of the range.

Visible fullness and actual filler are not the same thing. Imaging studies show HA can remain in tissue after the visible effect has faded, so frequent top-ups can build up and spread above the lip line. A review before each top-up is sensible.

Risks

Risks: cold sores, uneven healing and vascular occlusion

Lip blush: swelling, tenderness and dryness for a few days are common. Lip work can trigger a cold sore in people who are prone, so tell the artist beforehand; preventive medication can be arranged with your own doctor. Retention can be uneven, which the review appointment addresses. Less often, tattoo pigments can cause infection or an allergic reaction.

Lip filler: swelling, tenderness and bruising are the most common effects, and lumps, infection and cold sore flares are less common. The most serious risk is vascular occlusion, where filler blocks a blood vessel and can damage the skin. It is rare, but it is why filler should only be done by a doctor who can recognise and treat it. The US FDA also warns against needle-free pens for injecting filler.

  • After filler, treat skin turning pale, white, blotchy or dusky as an emergency.
  • Pain that is increasing rather than settling also needs urgent attention.
  • Any change in vision after filler anywhere on the face is an emergency.
  • After lip blush, see a doctor for spreading redness, pus, fever or worsening pain.
  • Contact the clinic that treated you at once, or go to an emergency department.

Who suits which

Which one suits you

Wait on both if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active cold sore or infection on the lips, or have had recent dental work or another procedure in the area. If lip darkening is new, patchy or spreading, see a doctor first.

  • Pale, patchy or uneven lip colour: lip blush.
  • Lips you want fuller, more projected or more even in size: a filler question for a doctor.
  • A border that has softened with age: lip blush can clarify it; a doctor can advise whether volume is part of the picture.
  • Dark or cool-toned lips: lip blush with a warmer correcting tone may help even them out, but it is not a lightening treatment.
  • Dry, flaky lips only: neither first; moisturise, use a lip balm with sunscreen, and ask about the HydraFacial Perk Lip add-on (priced at the counter).
  • Old filler that feels lumpy or has moved above the lip line: a correction assessment before anything new.

Combining

Having both: order and timing

Lip blush and lip filler can be combined, because they do different jobs. Plan the order with both providers rather than booking them close together, and never on the same day.

A dermatology review of permanent make-up notes that cosmetic tattoo can shift or look different when filler is later injected beneath it. For that reason it usually makes sense to settle volume first, wait until swelling has fully gone and the shape is stable, and then design colour around the lips you will actually have. Your doctor can tell you how long to wait after filler.

Tell each provider about the other treatment. If you are prone to cold sores, one preventive plan agreed with your doctor can cover both.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

Is lip blush better than lip filler?

Neither is better; they do different things. Lip blush adds colour and evens out tone, while lip filler adds volume and shape. Choose by what bothers you: colour, or size and shape.

Does lip blush make lips look fuller?

It can make lips look better defined by clarifying the border and evening out colour, but it does not add volume. Physically fuller lips are a filler question for a doctor.

How much is lip filler in Singapore?

It depends on the product and how much is needed, which a doctor judges at an assessment. Be cautious of per-syringe deals offered without one. SkinRev Lab does not perform fillers; for lip filler, ask IN Eternity Clinic directly, where treatments are priced at consultation.

How long does lip filler last?

Commonly about six to twelve months. In a meta-analysis of lip studies, 74% of people still had fuller lips at six months and 46% at twelve months. Some HA can remain in the tissue after the visible effect fades.

Can I get lip blush after lip filler?

Often yes, once the filler has fully settled and swelling has gone, so colour is designed on the final shape. Tell your artist about the filler and ask your doctor how long to wait.

Which hurts more, lip blush or lip filler?

Both are done on a sensitive area. Lip blush uses topical numbing throughout, and most people find it more intense than brow work. Filler uses numbing cream and many HA gels contain a local anaesthetic; the pressure and tenderness usually fade within a day.

Can lip blush or lip filler cause cold sores?

Both can trigger a cold sore in people who carry the virus. If you get cold sores, say so beforehand; your doctor can advise on preventive antiviral medication. Do not have either treatment while a cold sore is active.

Who can do lip filler in Singapore?

Lip filler is a medical procedure and should be done by a doctor, in a clinic that can recognise and treat complications. Avoid non-medical settings and needle-free filler pens.
