Chest wrinkles and décolletage lines: why they form, and what softens them

Lines on the chest usually come from years of sun, thinning skin and sleeping on one side. Here is how to tell which applies to you, what helps at home, and what SKINLIFT and doctor-led options can do.

Quick answer

  • Chest wrinkles, or décolletage lines, are the fine lines across the upper chest and the vertical creases between the breasts.
  • They usually come from sun damage, thinning skin and pressure from side sleeping. One review describes photodamaged chest skin as having laxity, lines, pigment, redness, roughness and thinning.
  • At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall, SKINLIFT aims to firm the skin and soften lines and wrinkles on the décolletage, with no needles. It is planned and priced at your assessment.

What causes chest wrinkles

Three things usually act together.

  • Sun. The V of the neckline gets daily sun and is often missed with sunscreen. Over years this leaves lines, brown patches, redness and rough texture.
  • Sleep. Side sleeping folds the chest skin along the same line every night, which is why vertical creases between the breasts often look deepest in the morning. Sleep wrinkles have been described on the face as a result of mechanical distortion during sleep, and the same kind of pressure acts on the chest.
  • Ageing skin. Collagen falls with age and after menopause, so the skin thins, loosens and holds a crease for longer.

A quick check in the mirror

  • Lines fade by midday: mostly sleep related.
  • Lines stay at rest, with brown spots or redness: mostly sun damage.
  • Thin skin that crinkles like paper: see our guide to crepey skin.
  • Skin looks looser overall: firming is likely to matter more than surface care.

What helps at home

  • Use sunscreen on the chest every day, not just the face.
  • Try sleeping on your back, or use a pillow that stops the chest folding.
  • Moisturise daily. Chest skin can be sensitive, so bring in any retinoid slowly and stop if it irritates.

SKINLIFT for the décolletage

SKINLIFT uses N Pulse-Ultrasound, with multi-sequential pulses to the deeper support layers. On the décolletage it aims to firm the skin and soften lines and wrinkles. It is painless, with no needles and no numbing, and a session takes about 30 minutes, with little to no downtime.

It is a non-medical treatment performed by Aesthetic Therapists at SkinRev Lab. The décolletage is planned and priced at your assessment. Results vary.

Doctor-led options

A review of chest rejuvenation lists injectable hyaluronic acid and poly-L-lactic acid, chemical peels, lasers, intense pulsed light and microfocused ultrasound among the reported approaches, and notes that few articles cover combinations. Dr Sin Yong can advise on what suits your skin, priced at consultation. See neck and hand rejuvenation for related options.

When to see a doctor first

Chest skin gets a lot of sun, so any new, changing or bleeding spot should be checked before cosmetic treatment. Any lump, dimpling or other change in the breast also needs a doctor.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

What causes wrinkles between the breasts?

They usually come from sun damage, thinning skin and pressure from side sleeping, which folds the chest skin in the same place night after night.

Can chest wrinkles be reversed?

They can be softened rather than erased. Lines that fade by midday are usually sleep related and respond best to a change in sleep position. Lines that stay at rest need sun protection and treatment that works on the skin itself.

Can SKINLIFT treat the décolletage?

SKINLIFT aims to firm the skin and soften lines and wrinkles on the décolletage, with no needles. It is a non-medical treatment performed by Aesthetic Therapists, and results vary.

How much does décolletage treatment cost at SkinRev Lab?

The décolletage is planned and priced at your assessment, because the area and the number of sessions depend on your skin. The total is set out before you book.

When should I see a doctor about my chest skin?

See a doctor for any new, changing or bleeding spot, for a rash that does not settle, and for any lump, dimpling or other change in the breast.
