Guide · Moon face
Moon face a round face shape, or a reason to see a doctor?
'Moon face' can mean two very different things: a naturally round face, or a fuller, rounder face caused by long-term steroids or Cushing's syndrome. Here is how to tell them apart, when to see a doctor first, and which options fit cheek fat, a strong jaw muscle, a double chin or loose skin.

Quick answer
- Moon face means a round, full face. Most people searching for it have a naturally round face shape from cheek fat, a strong jaw muscle, fat under the chin, bone structure or puffiness; doctors also use 'moon facies' for a face that has rounded because of long-term steroid medicines or Cushing's syndrome.
- A face that has become rounder over weeks or months, especially with weight gain around the tummy, a fatty pad at the back of the neck, wide purple stretch marks, easy bruising or weak thighs, needs a GP or endocrinologist, not a cosmetic treatment. If you take steroids, never stop or cut them down on your own: stopping suddenly can be dangerous.
- For a round face shape, the option follows the cause: jaw slimming injections for a large masseter muscle, fat reduction for a double chin, tightening for early jowls, and overall weight change for full cheeks. No device reliably removes deep cheek (buccal) fat, and buccal fat removal is surgery with little long-term evidence.
- At SkinRev Lab, CityLink Mall: SKINSHAPE double chin or lower face zones (S$288 per zone, first zone S$88) and SKINLIFT (Face S$888, Double Chin S$488), before GST. Jaw slimming injections and fat freezing are performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation; SkinRev Lab does not prescribe or inject.
Two meanings
Moon face: two very different meanings
In everyday use, 'moon face' describes a face that looks round and full, with wide cheeks and a soft jawline. That is usually a matter of anatomy and body composition: how much fat sits in the cheeks and under the chin, how large the chewing muscles are, the shape of the jaw and cheekbones, and how much fluid the face is holding that day.
In medicine, 'moon facies' is a specific sign. Long-term exposure to glucocorticoids, either from steroid medicines or from the body making too much cortisol (Cushing's syndrome), shifts fat into the cheeks, temples and under the chin, so the face becomes rounder and fuller over weeks to months, often with flushed cheeks.
The two need very different responses. A round face shape is a cosmetic question with several possible answers. A face that has changed shape recently, especially alongside other body changes, is a medical question first.
Steroids and Cushing's
Moon face from steroids or Cushing's syndrome
Steroid medicines such as prednisolone and dexamethasone are essential for many conditions, from asthma and autoimmune disease to cancer care and transplants, and fat redistribution is one of their commonest effects. In a French cohort of 80 adults starting at least 20 mg of prednisone a day for three months or more, lipodystrophy, the fat redistribution that includes a rounder face, appeared in 63% by three months and was the side effect patients found most distressing, particularly women and younger people.
Cushing's syndrome is less common: the body itself makes too much cortisol, usually because of a small tumour in the pituitary or adrenal gland. An Endocrine Society guideline notes that facial fullness and weight gain are common in the general population, and that the features that point more strongly to Cushing's are easy bruising, facial redness, weakness of the thigh and shoulder muscles, and reddish-purple stretch marks more than 1 cm wide. It advises doctors to rule out hidden steroid exposure first, including from skin creams, herbal products and tonics.
In Singapore, HSA has warned about products sold as herbal, traditional or slimming remedies that were found to contain undeclared steroids. If your face has rounded while taking such a product for some time, keep the packaging and see a doctor before stopping it.
Never stop or reduce prescribed steroids on your own to get rid of a moon face. After weeks of treatment the body's own cortisol production is suppressed, and stopping suddenly can cause adrenal insufficiency, which can be life-threatening. A joint European Society of Endocrinology and Endocrine Society guideline sets out how doctors taper steroids and notes that recovery varies widely between people. A steroid moon face usually softens gradually over months once the dose can safely be lowered.
See a doctor first
Signs a round face needs a doctor, not a facial
A GP can arrange the first tests and refer you to an endocrinologist if needed. Cosmetic treatment can wait: it will not change a face that is rounding because of cortisol, and thin, easily bruised skin needs extra care with any procedure.
- Your face has become noticeably rounder over weeks or months without an obvious reason.
- Weight gain mainly around the tummy, with thinner arms and legs.
- A fatty pad at the back of the neck or above the collarbones.
- Wide, reddish-purple stretch marks, easy bruising or thin skin.
- Weak thighs or shoulders, for example difficulty getting up from a chair.
- New high blood pressure or blood sugar, irregular periods, low mood or poor sleep.
- You take, or recently stopped, steroid tablets, injections, high-dose inhalers or strong steroid creams, or an unlabelled 'herbal' remedy.
- Facial puffiness with swollen ankles, breathlessness, foamy urine, or tiredness and feeling cold, which can point to kidney, heart or thyroid problems.
Round face shape
Moon face from a round face shape: the usual causes
For most people, a round face comes from one main cause with a little of another. A few simple checks in the mirror give a useful first answer, and an assessment confirms it.
| Cause | Clue | What usually helps |
|---|---|---|
| Large masseter (chewing) muscle | A firm bulge at the jaw angle when you clench | Jaw slimming injections by a doctor |
| Fat under the chin | A soft roll you can pinch under the chin | Non-surgical fat reduction; liposuction for larger amounts |
| Full cheeks | Soft, full cheeks that often run in the family or change with weight | Overall weight change; facial fat often lessens with age |
| Early loose skin | Jowls and a blurred jawline that sharpen when you lift the skin | Skin tightening and lifting |
| Bone structure | Width that stays the same whether you clench or relax | Chin projection, or a surgical opinion |
| Puffiness | Fuller in the morning or after salty food, alcohol or poor sleep | Sleep, less salt and alcohol; lymphatic massage for a few hours' effect |
Jaw muscle
A wide jaw: masseter slimming
A prominent masseter is common in East Asian faces and grows with clenching, grinding and chewing habits. It widens the lower face, so the face reads as round or square. No device at SkinRev Lab slims this muscle.
The usual approach is a jaw slimming injection: small doses of a wrinkle-relaxing injection placed into the masseter, so the muscle is used less and gradually thins over several weeks. A 2026 meta-analysis of five placebo-controlled trials with 536 people found short-term improvement in muscle prominence and thickness, but no agreed ideal dose. The effect fades over months, chewing may tire for a few weeks, and in people with early jowls it can make the lower face look heavier.
It is a prescription treatment, performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic after examining the jaw at rest and while clenching, and priced at consultation. SkinRev Lab does not inject.
Cheek fat
Cheek fat and facial fat reduction
Cheek fullness is not one pad of fat. The fat just under the skin of the face is divided into separate compartments, and what people call cheek fat spans several of them; the buccal fat pad sits deeper, between the cheek muscles. Genes, age and overall body weight decide much of how full they look.
Facial fat follows total body fat, so steady weight loss is the main non-surgical way to slim full cheeks. No energy device reliably reduces the deep buccal fat pad, and massage cannot move or remove it. SKINSHAPE's face zones at SkinRev Lab are the double chin and the lower face along the jawline, not the mid-cheek.
Buccal fat removal is surgery, done through a small cut inside the mouth by a plastic or oral and maxillofacial surgeon; SkinRev Lab does not perform it. A review of the published evidence found only two case series of more than five patients, 53 people in total, and no long-term follow-up. Faces naturally lose volume with age, so removing fat in your twenties or thirties can risk a hollow look later; take time over the decision.
Double chin
A double chin that rounds the face
Fullness under the chin softens the line between the jaw and neck, which makes the whole face look rounder, especially in photos. If you can pinch a soft roll under the chin, it is fat above the neck muscle, the layer that non-surgical treatments reach.
At SkinRev Lab, SKINSHAPE treats the double chin as one 15 × 15 cm zone with Miglou microwave energy, S$288 per session before GST, with a first zone for new clients at S$88; the lower face zone, for fullness along the jawline, is priced the same. SKINLIFT Double Chin, a 30-minute needle-free focused ultrasound session for fullness with some loose skin, is S$488 before GST. Change builds over weeks to a few months across a course.
At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong performs fat freezing for pinchable fat under the chin, priced at consultation. A set-back chin can also make the neck look fuller, and adding chin projection may help more than removing fat.
Loose skin
Early jowls and skin laxity
From the late thirties, collagen loss lets tissue settle downwards, and early jowls widen the lower face so it reads as round or square rather than tapered. Gently lifting the skin towards your ears in the mirror shows how much of the width is laxity.
SKINLIFT Face at SkinRev Lab uses needle-free N-pulse focused ultrasound on the jowls, nasolabial folds and jawline in about 30 minutes, S$888 per session before GST, for mild to moderate laxity. Dr Sin Yong performs VF Lift, his Volnewmer radiofrequency vertical facelift protocol, at SkinRev Lab, and HIFU at IN Eternity Clinic; both are priced at consultation. Heavy laxity is beyond what devices can lift and needs a surgical opinion.
Options compared
Face slimming options by cause, with prices
Many faces have two causes, so plans often combine two approaches a few weeks apart. Nothing changes face shape on the day: muscle slimming shows over weeks, and fat reduction and collagen change over about two to three months; results vary. SkinRev Lab is at #B1-28 CityLink Mall, linked underground to City Hall and Esplanade MRT; IN Eternity Clinic is at 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
What causes a moon face?
Usually a mix of anatomy and body composition: full cheeks, a large chewing muscle, fat under the chin, bone shape, early loose skin or puffiness. A medical 'moon facies' is different: a face that rounds over weeks or months because of long-term steroid medicines or the body making too much cortisol (Cushing's syndrome).
Is moon face from steroids permanent?
Usually not. It tends to soften gradually over months once the dose can safely be lowered or stopped, though the pace varies from person to person. Only your doctor should change the dose, because stopping steroids suddenly can be dangerous.
Can I stop taking steroids to get rid of moon face?
No, not on your own. Long-term steroids suppress the body's own cortisol, and stopping suddenly can cause adrenal insufficiency, which can be life-threatening. Talk to the doctor who prescribed them; they may be able to lower the dose gradually or change the treatment.
Is a moon face a sign of Cushing's syndrome?
It can be, but a round face on its own is common and usually is not. Doctors look for features that point more strongly to Cushing's, such as easy bruising, facial redness, weak thigh or shoulder muscles and reddish-purple stretch marks wider than 1 cm. If your face has changed alongside signs like these, see a GP.
How can I reduce cheek fat without surgery?
Steady weight loss is the main way, because facial fat follows total body fat. No device reliably removes deep cheek fat, and massage only reduces puffiness for a few hours. If the roundness is really a double chin or a strong jaw muscle, those respond to fat reduction or jaw slimming injections.
Should I have buccal fat removal for a round face?
Think carefully. It is surgery inside the mouth, the published evidence is small with no long-term follow-up, and faces naturally lose volume with age, so removal can risk hollow cheeks later. Confirm first that buccal fat, rather than muscle, a double chin or weight, is the real cause.
How do I know if my round face is fat or muscle?
Clench your teeth with your fingertips at the corner of your jaw: a firm bulge that pushes out is the masseter muscle. A soft roll you can pinch under the chin or along the jaw is fat. Width that does not change and feels bony is usually bone.
How much does face slimming cost at SkinRev Lab?
SKINSHAPE double chin or lower face zones are S$288 per zone, with a first zone at S$88; SKINLIFT Double Chin is S$488 and SKINLIFT Face S$888, all per session before GST. Jaw slimming injections and fat freezing at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation by the clinic.
