Guide · Dark spots

Dark spots on the face what kind you have, and what actually fades it

Dark spots are not one condition. Sun spots, freckles, melasma, post-acne marks, Hori's naevus and seborrhoeic keratoses look alike at a glance but need different care, so the first step is working out which one you have.

Quick answer

  • Most dark spots on the face are one of six things: sun spots (solar lentigines), freckles, melasma, post-acne marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), seborrhoeic keratoses or Hori's naevus, and each responds to a different treatment.
  • A spot that is new or changing, has an irregular border or several colours, or itches, bleeds or crusts should be checked by a doctor before anything is done to it.
  • Daily sunscreen is the base of every plan, and ingredients such as azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C and retinoids can fade flat, superficial marks gradually; a mark a few shades darker than your skin usually takes 6 to 12 months to fade.
  • Defined sun spots, freckles and Hori's naevus usually need a pigment laser such as Pico Laser or Laser Toning, performed by Dr Sin Yong at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation; SkinRev Lab facials (from S$128 before GST) help dullness and mild uneven tone but do not remove defined spots.

Types

Six common kinds of dark spot

TypeWhat it looks likeTypical clues
Sun spots (solar lentigines)Flat, well-defined brown marksCheeks, temples, backs of hands; build up with years of sun; stay all year
FrecklesSmall, light brown, scatteredOften from childhood; darker after sun, paler indoors; run in families
MelasmaSoft-edged, symmetrical patchesBoth cheeks, forehead, upper lip; worse with sun, heat and hormones
Post-acne marks (PIH)Flat brown or grey-brown marksExactly where a pimple, rash or injury was; level with the skin
Hori's naevusBlue-grey or grey-brown spotsCheekbones; appears in adulthood; often mistaken for melasma
Seborrhoeic keratosisRaised, waxy, 'stuck-on' brown spotMore common with age; feels rough or raised to the touch

Tell them apart

How to tell them apart at home

Many people have more than one type at once, such as sun spots on the cheekbones with melasma underneath. A home check is a starting point; only a doctor can diagnose a spot.

  • Touch it: a flat mark is pigment; a raised, waxy or rough spot may be a seborrhoeic keratosis or another growth.
  • Look at the edges: sun spots have crisp edges; melasma has soft, blurred edges and spreads in patches.
  • Check for symmetry: melasma usually appears on both sides of the face in a similar pattern.
  • Note the colour: brown is usually shallow pigment; grey or blue-grey suggests deeper pigment, such as Hori's naevus.
  • Think about history: a mark where a pimple was is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation; freckles that fade in cooler, indoor months are ephelides.
  • Watch it over time: anything new, growing or changing needs a doctor, not a cream.

Doctor first

When a dark spot needs a doctor

Most dark spots are harmless, but some skin cancers look like ordinary brown spots at first. Dermatologists use the ABCDE checklist: Asymmetry, an irregular Border, varied Colour, a Diameter usually larger than 6 mm (about a pencil eraser), and Evolving, meaning a spot that looks different from the rest or is changing in size, shape or colour.

The NHS advises seeing a doctor if a mole or spot has changed size, shape or colour, is painful or itchy, or is inflamed, bleeding or crusty. Do not have such a spot lasered, frozen or 'removed' at a beauty salon before it has been examined. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong examines moles and growths first, and refers to a dermatologist or hospital specialist when needed.

Home care

What helps at home

Sun protection does the most work. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every morning, reapply every two hours outdoors and after sweating, and add shade or a hat between 11am and 3pm, when Singapore's UV is strongest. For melasma and dark spots, the American Academy of Dermatology also suggests a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide, which helps against visible light.

For flat marks, the AAD lists ingredients that can fade dark spots gradually. Give each one time, introduce one at a time, and stop anything that stings or causes redness, because irritation itself can darken Asian skin.

  • Azelaic acid: gentle, suits acne-prone skin and post-acne marks.
  • Niacinamide: reduces the transfer of pigment to skin cells; well tolerated.
  • Vitamin C: an antioxidant that can brighten uneven tone.
  • Retinoids (retinol, adapalene): speed up cell turnover; not for use in pregnancy.
  • Glycolic or kojic acid: can help flat, superficial marks.
  • Avoid: lightening creams bought online without clear ingredients. Singapore's Health Sciences Authority has warned about creams containing mercury and undeclared hydroquinone, which is prescription-only here.

IN Eternity Clinic

Doctor-led lasers at IN Eternity Clinic

Dr Sin Yong chooses the laser and settings after examining the pigment, because the wrong laser or too much energy can darken Asian skin. Treatments are performed at IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, and priced at consultation by the clinic (WhatsApp +65 8815 3008).

  • Pico Laser (T2 Frax Radiance): picosecond pulses that break pigment into fine particles, mainly by pressure rather than heat. For sun spots, freckles, uneven tone and post-acne marks; redness for a few hours, possible flaking for a few days.
  • Laser Toning: low-energy 1064 nm Q-switched Nd:YAG passes that fade scattered pigment gradually over a course, with conservative settings.
  • Alexandrite Laser: 755 nm long-pulsed, for flat, defined sun spots and freckles; not used for melasma.
  • R2 Glow Laser: a gentle brightening course for dull, uneven tone and scattered sun-related pigment.

SkinRev Lab

What non-invasive treatments can and cannot do

Prices are per session, before GST. These treatments help dullness and mild, superficial unevenness, and can support a doctor's plan. They do not remove a defined sun spot, flatten a seborrhoeic keratosis, clear Hori's naevus or treat melasma, and we say so at the first visit. SkinRev Lab is at CityLink Mall #B1-28, linked underground to City Hall and Esplanade MRT, open daily 11am to 8pm.

  • HydraFacial Syndeo: mild glycolic and salicylic peel, vortex extraction, then serums that can include brightening actives. About 45 minutes, S$288 to S$438; first-timer rate at the counter.
  • Needleless SkinBooster: tone or hydration boosters through a specialised applicator, without needles. S$288 per region, first region from S$98.
  • Rejuran® PDRN Facial: needle-free c-PDRN for skin quality and calmer post-acne skin. S$128 to S$348.

Singapore

Why dark spots keep coming back here

Singapore sits near the equator, so UV is high all year, not just in summer. The sun that created sun spots keeps prompting new ones, and heat as well as light can darken melasma. That is why every treatment plan here includes daily sunscreen, and why laser sessions are best planned away from beach holidays.

Sun spots and post-acne marks are less likely to return with consistent protection, though new sun spots can still form. Melasma is chronic and tends to relapse with sun, heat or hormones, so it needs ongoing maintenance rather than a one-off treatment.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

What causes dark spots on the face?

Most are caused by sun exposure (sun spots and freckles), hormones with sun and heat (melasma), or inflammation such as acne (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Some are benign growths such as seborrhoeic keratoses, and a few are deeper pigment such as Hori's naevus.

How do I get rid of dark spots on my face fast?

There is no safe overnight fix. Defined sun spots and freckles usually respond fastest to a pigment laser after a doctor has confirmed what they are. Flat marks treated with sunscreen and brightening ingredients typically take 6 to 12 months to fade.

Are dark spots on the face dangerous?

Most are harmless, but some skin cancers can look like a brown spot. See a doctor if a spot is new and changing, irregular in shape or colour, or itches, bleeds or crusts.

What is the difference between melasma and sun spots?

Sun spots are individual, well-defined brown marks caused by years of sun. Melasma forms soft-edged, symmetrical patches, often on both cheeks, and is driven by sun, heat and hormones. Melasma needs a cautious medical plan, because strong heat-based treatments can make it worse.

Can facials remove dark spots?

No. Brightening facials can improve dullness and mild uneven tone, but they do not remove defined sun spots, freckles, Hori's naevus or seborrhoeic keratoses. Those need a doctor's assessment and usually a laser or removal.

Does niacinamide fade dark spots?

It can help gradually. In a clinical study in Japanese women, niacinamide reduced facial hyperpigmentation compared with a plain moisturiser after four weeks. It works best with daily sunscreen and does not remove defined spots.

How much does dark spot removal cost in Singapore?

At SkinRev Lab, non-invasive facials and boosters run from S$128 for a Rejuran® PDRN Facial to S$438 for a Platinum HydraFacial Syndeo, before GST. Pigment lasers and spot removal at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation by the clinic.

Will dark spots come back after laser treatment?

Treated sun spots are less likely to return with daily sun protection, but new ones can form. Melasma often relapses and needs maintenance. Post-acne marks return if new breakouts keep appearing, so controlling acne matters.
