Guide · Pico laser downtime

Pico laser downtime what to expect, day by day

How much downtime a pico laser has depends far more on what is being treated than on the machine. Here is what toning, spot removal, tattoo removal and fractional pico usually look like over the following days, and how to look after your skin in Singapore's heat, humidity and UV.

Quick answer

  • Pico laser downtime ranges from almost none to one to two weeks, depending on what is treated. Pico toning usually leaves mild pinkness for a few hours; targeted spot removal leaves small dark crusts that flake off in about a week; tattoo removal and fractional pico take longer to settle.
  • Expected reactions include redness and warmth on the day, pinpoint bleeding or tiny dots with fractional or holographic modes, darkened micro-crusts over treated spots, and a brief white frosting over tattoos. These are normal responses, not complications, as long as they settle on schedule.
  • The main risk in Asian skin is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): temporary darkening that can appear a few weeks later and usually fades over weeks to months. Strict sun protection, not picking crusts, and pausing strong actives all lower that risk.
  • In Singapore pico laser is a medical treatment performed by a doctor. At IN Eternity Clinic, Dr Sin Yong performs Pico Laser (T2 Frax Radiance) and explains the downtime for your plan at consultation, where it is priced; SkinRev Lab does not perform lasers.

Why it varies

Downtime depends on the mode, not just the laser

The same picosecond laser can be used in very different ways. Toning passes a low-energy, wide beam evenly over the face. Spot removal places higher-energy pulses on individual brown spots. Tattoo removal delivers enough energy to shatter ink deep in the skin. Fractional or holographic modes pass the beam through a special lens that splits it into many tiny high-energy points, creating microscopic injury zones under the surface to prompt collagen renewal for acne scars, pores and texture.

Each mode leaves a different kind of reaction, so a friend's no-downtime pico and your own week of crusting can both be normal. Energy, number of passes, the area treated, your skin type and whether your skin was tanned or irritated beforehand also change how the skin looks afterwards.

Before booking around work, events or travel, ask the doctor which mode is planned for you and what the skin is expected to look like on days 1, 3 and 7.

These are typical patterns, not promises. Your own course depends on the settings used, the area, your skin type and how well the skin is protected afterwards. If what you see is clearly worse or slower than what the doctor described, get in touch rather than waiting.

By indication

Toning, spot removal, tattoo and fractional pico compared

Toning for dull or uneven tone and melasma is the gentlest. Most people return to work the same day with only mild pinkness. The trade-off is that it works slowly, across a course, and over-frequent or high cumulative energy can cause pale, mottled patches, so more is not better.

Spot removal for sun spots and freckles has a short but visible downtime: treated spots darken and form small crusts that shed in about a week. In a study of 12 Asian patients treated with a dual-wavelength picosecond laser for benign pigment, PIH occurred in about 5% and blistering in about 7%, and freckles and sun spots typically needed one or two sessions to lighten by at least half.

Tattoo removal causes the most immediate reaction: frosting, swelling, sometimes pinpoint bleeding and blistering, then scabs for one to two weeks. A clinical update from Singapore's National Skin Centre notes that ink colour and skin type guide the choice of laser and settings.

Fractional pico for acne scars and texture usually means one to three social days of redness, roughness and fine flaking. In a study of 26 Asian patients having six monthly sessions, mild PIH appeared after about 18% of sessions and cleared within about four weeks on average. A split-face trial in 31 Asian patients found crusting and swelling settled faster, with less PIH, than with an ablative erbium laser.

Aftercare

Aftercare in Singapore's heat, humidity and UV

Singapore's UV index regularly reaches very high or extreme levels around midday, all year, and freshly lasered skin is more sensitive to it. Humidity and sweat can also sting healing skin, while heavy, occlusive creams can trap heat and trigger breakouts or prickly heat. The aim is simple: keep the skin clean, calm, lightly moisturised and out of the sun.

Follow the written aftercare from your clinic first; the list below reflects common guidance.

  • Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser; pat dry, do not rub.
  • Use a light, bland moisturiser; a gel-cream often feels better than a rich cream in humid weather.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and reapply every two to three hours outdoors; add a hat or umbrella and keep to shade from late morning to mid-afternoon.
  • Do not pick, scrub or peel crusts; let them shed on their own.
  • Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs and strong vitamin C until the skin has settled, usually a few days to a week.
  • For tattoos or any blistering, keep the area clean and covered as instructed, and do not pop blisters.
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and long hot showers for the first couple of days, as heat prolongs redness.

Getting back to normal

When you can wear makeup, exercise and go back in the sun

These are common timings, not rules. Your doctor may give different advice depending on the energy used, the area and how your skin responds, and that advice comes first. If you have a beach holiday or outdoor event coming up, plan treatment so the skin is fully healed beforehand, or schedule it for after you return.

Asian skin

PIH: the side effect that matters most in Asian skin

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is darkening that appears after the skin has been inflamed or injured. In Asian skin it is the most common unwanted effect of pigment and resurfacing lasers. It usually shows up a few weeks after treatment, can look like the original problem returning, and generally fades over weeks to months with sun protection and time.

A Hong Kong study of fractional resurfacing in Chinese patients found that both energy and treatment density affected PIH risk, and that cooling during treatment helped. Picosecond lasers spread less heat than older heat-based pigment lasers and may carry a lower PIH risk, but the risk is not zero, and a 2026 review of lasers in skin of colour stressed strict photoprotection and sequential, lower-energy treatment.

If darkening appears, do not try to scrub or peel it away. Tell the doctor, who may pause or adjust the course and may suggest lightening creams.

  • Recent tanning or sun exposure before treatment
  • Picking or rubbing crusts
  • Heat, sweating and friction in the first days
  • Eczema or irritated skin at the time of treatment
  • Settings or session frequency that are too aggressive
  • Skipping sunscreen between sessions

Warning signs

When to call the clinic

Most reactions settle steadily. Contact the clinic promptly if the skin is getting worse rather than better, or if you notice any of the following. For severe pain, a fever with spreading redness, or any change in vision, seek urgent medical care.

  • Pain, heat or swelling that increases after the second day
  • Yellow crusts, pus or spreading redness, which can mean infection
  • Clusters of small painful blisters, especially around the lips, which can be a cold sore flare (mention any history of cold sores before treatment)
  • Blisters after toning or spot removal, where they are not expected
  • Swelling that closes the eye or keeps worsening after 48 hours
  • Any eye pain, irritation or change in vision
  • New dark or pale patches appearing in the weeks afterwards
  • An itchy rash or hives after using an aftercare product

Sessions

How far apart pico laser sessions are spaced

Spacing gives the skin time to recover and the body time to clear pigment or ink fragments. Shortening the gap rarely speeds results and can raise the risk of PIH or pale patches. The doctor sets the interval after seeing how your skin responded to the previous session.

TreatmentUsual spacingUsual course
Toning for dull or uneven toneEvery 2 to 4 weeksA course of several sessions, then maintenance
MelasmaEvery 2 to 4 weeks, cautiouslyA course with creams and sunscreen; relapse is common

Evidence

What the research says, honestly

A 2021 systematic review of 77 studies concluded that picosecond lasers are safe and effective for a growing range of uses, with the strongest evidence for tattoo removal and good evidence for melasma, skin rejuvenation and benign pigment. Most downtime data, however, come from small studies, often under 30 people, and from clinics with experienced operators.

Downtime also depends on device, settings and technique, which vary between clinics, so published figures are a guide rather than a forecast for your skin. Individual results and recovery vary.

Where to go

Pico laser in our network

Pico laser is a medical treatment. At IN Eternity Clinic, 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT, Dr Sin Yong performs Pico Laser using the T2 Frax Radiance protocol and Laser Toning with a 1064 nm Q-switched Nd:YAG. He examines the pigment or scarring first, then explains which mode suits you and what downtime to plan for. Treatment is priced at consultation by the clinic; WhatsApp +65 8815 3008.

SkinRev Lab, at CityLink Mall #B1-28 by City Hall MRT, is a non-invasive centre and does not perform lasers. Once your doctor confirms the skin has healed, the Needleless SkinBooster (S$288 per region before GST) can support hydration between laser sessions, but it does not break up pigment or ink. See a doctor first about any spot that is new, changing, bleeding or irregular.

Common questions

Your questions,
answered

How long is the downtime for pico laser?

It depends on the mode. Pico toning has little or no downtime beyond a few hours of pinkness. Spot removal leaves small dark crusts for about a week. Fractional pico usually means one to three days of redness and roughness, and tattoo removal can take one to two weeks to heal on the surface.

Can I go to work after pico laser?

After toning, usually yes, the same day. After spot removal most people go to work with visible small dark spots for about a week, which can often be covered lightly after the first day. After tattoo removal or stronger fractional pico, you may prefer a day or two off.

How long does redness last after pico laser?

After toning, usually a few hours. After spot removal, local redness fades within a day or two while the spots crust. After fractional pico, redness typically lasts one to three days. Redness that worsens after the second day should be checked by the clinic.

When can I wear makeup after pico laser?

Usually the next day after toning or spot removal, applied gently without rubbing crusts. After fractional pico, wait about 24 to 48 hours. Do not apply makeup over a treated tattoo or any broken or blistered skin until it has healed.

Why are my spots darker after pico laser?

In the first days this is expected: treated spots darken and form micro-crusts that shed in about a week. Darkening that appears a few weeks later is different and may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which usually fades with time and sun protection. Tell the doctor if it happens.

How long do the crusts last after pico laser spot removal?

Usually about five to ten days on the face, longer on the body. Let them fall off on their own. Picking them early raises the risk of marks and darkening, especially in Asian skin.

Can I exercise after pico laser?

Light activity is usually fine the next day after toning. Avoid heavy sweating, hot yoga, saunas and swimming for about 24 to 48 hours after toning or spot removal, and until the skin has healed after tattoo removal or fractional pico. Heat and sweat can prolong redness and irritation.

How many weeks between pico laser sessions?

Toning is commonly spaced two to four weeks apart, fractional pico about four weeks, and tattoo removal six to eight weeks or longer. Sun spots are usually reviewed after four to eight weeks. The doctor adjusts spacing to how your skin responds.

Does pico laser cause PIH in Asian skin?

It can. The risk is generally lower than with older heat-based pigment lasers, and studies in Asian patients report it mostly as mild and temporary, but it is not zero. Cautious settings, no treatment while tanned, and strict daily sunscreen keep the risk down.
