CoolSculpting vs SKINSHAPE fat freezing, microwave and ultrasound contouring compared
CoolSculpting is one brand of fat freezing. Here is how fat freezing compares with microwave and ultrasound body contouring on sessions, comfort, risk and price, and which suits which kind of stubborn fat.

Quick answer
- CoolSculpting is a brand of cryolipolysis, or fat freezing: an applicator cools a pinchable bulge so that fat cells are injured and cleared by the body over two to three months. SkinRev Lab does not offer CoolSculpting; doctor-led fat freezing (cryolipolysis) is available at IN Eternity Clinic and priced at consultation.
- SKINSHAPE at SkinRev Lab uses microwave energy to warm the fat layer and the skin above it, in sessions of about 30 minutes per 15 × 15 cm zone. It is S$288 per zone before GST, with one first-visit zone at S$88.
- SKINUSHAPE at SkinRev Lab uses guided ultrasound for deeper, more compact fat, also S$288 per zone with a first zone at S$88. Fat freezing, SKINSHAPE and SKINUSHAPE all change the contour of an area in people near a stable weight; none of them is a weight-loss treatment.
- Fat freezing carries a rare risk called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, in which the treated area slowly grows instead of shrinking; a 2025 meta-analysis estimated it at about 1 in 455 people. That risk is linked to cooling, not to heat-based contouring, although heat-based devices have a smaller body of published research.
The names
CoolSculpting, cryolipolysis and fat freezing: what the names mean
Cryolipolysis is the medical name for reducing fat with controlled cooling. Fat freezing is the everyday name for the same thing. CoolSculpting is one brand of cryolipolysis device; other brands use the same principle with different applicators and settings. When people search for CoolSculpting in Singapore, they are usually looking for fat freezing in general.
In Singapore, cryolipolysis is offered at doctors' clinics. IN Eternity Clinic, our affiliated medical clinic at Pacific Plaza, offers fat freezing (cryolipolysis) performed by Dr Sin Yong; it does not offer the CoolSculpting brand. SkinRev Lab, a non-invasive aesthetic centre at CityLink Mall, does not offer fat freezing of any kind. Its body contouring options are SKINSHAPE (microwave) and SKINUSHAPE (guided ultrasound).
Side by side
Fat freezing, SKINSHAPE and SKINUSHAPE compared
All three aim to reduce a localised layer of fat under the skin. They differ in the energy used, how the session feels and what else they act on. Figures for fat freezing are typical published ranges and vary with the device and applicator.
| Fat freezing (cryolipolysis, e.g. CoolSculpting) | SKINSHAPE (microwave) | SKINUSHAPE (guided ultrasound) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy | Controlled cooling | UHF microwave heat (Miglou) | Guided ultrasound, mainly mechanical (Alma PrimeX) |
| How it acts on fat | Cold injures fat cells, which the body clears over weeks | Heat acts on fat cells in the treated zone | Acoustic waves act mechanically on fat cells |
| Applicator | Vacuum cup or flat plate on a pinchable bulge | Handpiece over a 15 × 15 cm zone | Handpiece moved across a 15 × 15 cm zone |
| Session | Roughly an hour per area, depending on the applicator | About 30 minutes per zone | Depends on the number of zones |
| How it feels | Intense cold and pulling, then numbness | Comfortable warmth | Warmth and a mild buzzing |
| Afterwards | Redness, swelling, tenderness or numbness for days to a few weeks | Little to no downtime | Brief warmth or mild flushing |
| Also aims at | Fat only; does not tighten skin | Mild skin laxity and cellulite in the same session | Deeper, more compact fat |
| Specific rare risk | Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia | Not applicable; heat-related effects are possible | Not applicable |
| Where | IN Eternity Clinic (doctor), priced at consultation | SkinRev Lab, S$288 per zone; first zone S$88 | SkinRev Lab, S$288 per zone; first zone S$88 |
Sessions
How many sessions, and when you see a change
With fat freezing, each area is treated with one or more applicator cycles. The injured fat cells are cleared gradually, so the change is not visible on the day; it usually develops over two to three months, and a review appointment decides whether a further cycle makes sense.
SKINSHAPE and SKINUSHAPE are planned as a course. Each 15 × 15 cm zone is treated per session, sessions are spaced a few weeks apart, and results build across the course as the body clears treated fat. A full abdomen is usually two zones. The number of sessions depends on the area, the depth of the fat and your goal, and is set out at your assessment before you book.
Whichever route you choose, the fat cells that remain in an area can still enlarge if weight goes up, so a stable weight helps keep the contour.
Safety
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia: the rare risk with fat freezing
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) is a rare complication in which the treated area slowly becomes larger and firmer weeks to months after cryolipolysis, instead of smaller. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 28 studies and 13,078 patients estimated it at 0.22%, about 1 in 455 people. The authors rated the evidence as low certainty, noted that only a few studies followed people for 16 weeks or longer, and concluded the rate appears higher than manufacturer reports.
PAH does not go away on its own and usually needs surgical correction, such as liposuction. That is why it should be explained before treatment, and why a growing, firm area weeks after fat freezing should be reported to the treating doctor early.
Fat freezing is also not suitable for people with cold-triggered conditions such as cryoglobulinaemia, cold urticaria or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, during pregnancy, or over a hernia or recent surgery in the area. These are checked at a medical consultation.
Who suits which
Which approach suits which kind of stubborn fat
- A distinct, soft, pinchable bulge that fits an applicator, and you are comfortable with cold and a doctor-led process: fat freezing at IN Eternity Clinic.
- Fat with some loose skin or cellulite on the same area, and you prefer warmth to cold: SKINSHAPE at SkinRev Lab.
- Deeper or more compact fat that has been slow to change: SKINUSHAPE at SkinRev Lab.
- Fat, cellulite and laxity overlapping, or medical factors to check: a doctor's assessment, where Onda Pro (DEKA Coolwaves microwave) is one option at IN Eternity Clinic.
- Heavy, overhanging skin or a wide muscle separation: a surgical opinion, as none of these treatments removes excess skin.
- Weight is the main goal: start with doctor-supervised weight management, and consider contouring once weight is stable.
Evidence
What the research shows, honestly
Cryolipolysis has the largest evidence base of the three. The original 2008 study showed that controlled cooling could injure fat selectively without damaging the skin, and a 2015 systematic review of 19 clinical studies found average reductions in treated fat thickness of roughly 15% to 29% on calliper measurement, with mild, short-term side effects in most people.
Microwave contouring has a smaller literature, mostly small studies on one brand's system. In one retrospective study of 20 people treated on the abdomen with four sessions, three-dimensional imaging showed lower abdominal circumference and volume three months later; one author worked for the device maker, and there was no control group. We did not find peer-reviewed studies of the specific Miglou system SKINSHAPE uses, so its details rely on manufacturer documentation.
A broader review of non-invasive contouring describes the effects as mild to moderate, for example 2 to 4 cm of circumference over a course, and found no definitive non-invasive treatment for cellulite. Results vary between people, and none of these treatments replaces weight management.
Prices
What fat freezing and contouring cost in Singapore
In October 2026, publicly listed prices for CoolSculpting in central Singapore started at about S$400, with listings ranging up to about S$5,500. Most listings did not say whether the price was per cycle, per area or per package, so ask exactly what a quote covers before comparing.
At SkinRev Lab, SKINSHAPE and SKINUSHAPE are S$288 per 15 × 15 cm zone per session before GST, with one first-visit zone at S$88. Your Aesthetic Specialist maps the zones and sets out the total before you book. Fat freezing and Onda Pro at IN Eternity Clinic are priced at consultation by the clinic, after Dr Sin Yong has assessed the area.
SkinRev Lab is at CityLink Mall #B1-28, 1 Raffles Link, linked underground to City Hall and Esplanade MRT, open daily 11am to 8pm; WhatsApp +65 8266 9585. IN Eternity Clinic is at 9 Scotts Road, #12-01 Pacific Plaza, beside Orchard MRT; WhatsApp +65 8815 3008.

Common questions
Your questions,
answered
Is CoolSculpting available at SkinRev Lab?
No. SkinRev Lab does not offer CoolSculpting or any fat freezing. Its body contouring options are SKINSHAPE (microwave) and SKINUSHAPE (guided ultrasound). Doctor-led fat freezing (cryolipolysis) is available at IN Eternity Clinic, which does not use the CoolSculpting brand.
How much does CoolSculpting cost in Singapore?
In October 2026, public listings for CoolSculpting in central Singapore started at about S$400 and ranged up to about S$5,500, often without saying whether that was per cycle, area or package. SKINSHAPE at SkinRev Lab is S$288 per zone before GST, with a first zone at S$88.
Is CoolSculpting better than SKINSHAPE?
They work differently rather than one being better. Fat freezing has more published research and suits a distinct, pinchable bulge; SKINSHAPE uses warmth and also aims at mild laxity and cellulite, with little to no downtime. Which suits you depends on the area, the type of fat and your skin.
Does fat freezing hurt?
The first few minutes usually feel intensely cold with a pulling sensation, then the area goes numb. Tenderness, tingling or aching can follow for days to a few weeks. SKINSHAPE usually feels like comfortable warmth, and SKINUSHAPE like warmth with a mild buzzing.
What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia?
It is a rare complication of fat freezing in which the treated area slowly grows and hardens weeks to months later. A 2025 meta-analysis estimated it at about 1 in 455 people. It does not resolve on its own, so report any growing, firm area to your doctor early.
How many SKINSHAPE sessions will I need?
It depends on the area, the depth of the fat and your goal, and your Aesthetic Specialist sets out a course at assessment before you book. Each 15 × 15 cm zone is treated per session, and a full abdomen is usually two zones. Results build gradually across the course.
Can fat freezing or SKINSHAPE help me lose weight?
No. Both change the contour of a treated area and remove only a small amount of fat overall, so body weight does not change meaningfully. For weight concerns, doctor-supervised weight management is the better starting point.
Which is better for a double chin?
If the fullness is mainly soft fat, fat freezing at IN Eternity Clinic and SKINSHAPE's double chin zone (S$288 per session before GST) are both options. If it comes from loose skin, jaw shape or a low chin position, neither will help much, and a doctor's assessment is the better first step.
